Hello, I'm ancient, hairy and fat. And I've only just discovered that the stuff I like - locomotives, airships, Bryan Talbot graphic novels, Rankin Pratchett and Fforde, absurd ray-guns etc actually had a genre. My, this is going to be fun.

I apologise in advance for the blatant plug but Messrs Talbot and Rankin are both guests at the UK steampunk festival "Weekend at the Asylum" this September so I really could not pass it up.   Check out the Asylum thread in geographical (United Kingdom) or visit the event website at http://steampunk.synthasite.com.

Welcome to Brassgoggles one and all.

Ooo-errr...

well, I've been here about a week already and just peeked into this off topic area.

I am, SolarCenturion, A.K.A. iPirate, A.K.A. Pat Sullivan

I am a 44 year old security specialist.  I do mostly survailence type stuff with cameras and whatnot.  I'm very good at it, I just can't spell it ~NARF~

I used to be really really into pirates and I guess I still am.  But somewhere along the line I realized that pirates were just a part of what interested me.

I also used to be a neo-pagan punk rock/goth type person but I either burned out on it or just got bored.

Eventually I met the girl of my dreams, got married and got Born Again.

yah, nobody was more shocked than me, let me tell you.

I'm rather mild-mannered for a Bible Thumper.  I won't directly thump it at you...

errr... that is, I'm not looking to debate religion or make any converts and I really really take the whole "judge not and thou shalt not be judged" thing to heart.

I still have an interest in the paranormal, especially ghost type stuff.

I am indeed, solar powered.  I am under orders from my doctor to get sunshine every day.

I am married and with one little minion on the way.

so... go away, who the heck are you weird goggle people anyways... get off my lawn

Hello all!

Thought I'd do the polite thing and introduce myself. I'm Kit Cotton - Kit after my great aunt and Cotton as it was my great grandmother's surname. She was the inspiration for my real name, Amelia, as I was born exactly 100 years after her birth - 24th January 1888 and 1988 respectively!

I've always had a bit of a love affair with the Victorian aesthetic and it was through a DeviantArt search on just that when I came across Steampunk. I think one of my favourite aspects of the genre is the modification of everyday objects into spectacular Steampunk focal points - I would love my home to be completely covered in everything Steampunk! Time, money and the fact that I live in a rented house mean that won't be happening anytime soon, but I do what I can Smiley

Outside of my fantasies, I am a recent Performing Arts graduate. I'm not what you'd call an all singing, all dancing performer... we were all about devising theatre, especially poststructural stuff, so any singing or dancing was done with the utmost irony, I can assure you. In the future I'd like to write or perform comedy, or just cruise off in an airship and have an adventure.

Nice to meet you all!

Greetings, friends
My name is Dan, or Zed, or any combination of the two.  A couple of years ago I was an average person with an average life, but became dissatisfied with the average goal of generally surviving until an average death.  Then I discovered Steampunk.  I've always been a interested in general goth things, mostly ravens and similar.  I came across Emilie Autumn in my search for goth, enjoyed her distinctive style of music, and around the same time I started getting into Jules Verne and H.G Wells, and through a  series of coincidences I discovered it all (if in some cases loosely) came under Steampunk.  So here I am, saving money to get a spiffing outfit, and after seeing the link above regarding the Asylum I'm now psyched for going to it next year (I've got no chance of affording it this year).
In my spare time, which I unfortunately tend to have quite a lot of, I am writing a fantasy novel containing Steampunk elements and reading H.G Wells and Terry Pratchett, with some Neil Gaiman thrown in for good measure.
Further, I should probably mention that I currently live in Okehampton in Devon, a marvellous town on the outskirts of Dartmoor.  Also, if anyone wants to add me on Messenger then feel free to do so, its always good to have a chat no matter how random the person I chat to is.
Right, now I'm about done with this somewhat lengthy intro I shall check out the UK Steampunk thread.
See you around.

Good Afternoon, ladies, gentlemen and assorted others.

My name is Little Red, or, more commonly, Jess.  I have been in love with the genre of Steampunk for years, and it was only recently that I discovered through a couple of fortuitous accidents that there was in fact a genre called Steampunk and that other people liked the same things as me.  I'm joining because I'd like to meet some of them, and discuss airships and pocket watches without being given really strange looks.

Hello, all you spiffing people.  Cheesy

Good lords above, it's been a while.

Remember me, anyone? I haven't been on for a good long time, so I thought I'd better re-introduce myself - wotcher, I'm Aeryenne. I frequented this place all the time earlier last year, but due to several life occurances I fell not only out of the steampunk scene but out of pretty much everything - dark times happen to us all. But it's over now, and I feel I'm much the better for it, so I look forward to squooshing myself back into the swing of things!

Nice to (re)meet you all!

Greetings and salutations!

I figured since I have already stuck my nose into several threads, I should have the decency to introduce myself.

I am Denise, but more commonly known as Neecerie in quite a few places....

I am at this point probably more into the theoretical side of SP, the thoughts behind it, making things, etc. then the dressing up side of things. Although that might just be lack of opportunity and so forth.

I just moved to NJ from California to play with fun computer systems and so forth.....

Greetings to all...
I've alway been the strange "kid" who did strange things that made everyone else just kind of scratch their heads and wonder. You know, the one who modified a model trebuchet so that the cat could fire it (as long as it was preloaded with a cat toy) and sewed my own cape to wear in the wintertime instead of a jacket... Grin
I guess you could say I've always been a little steampunk, but I've not always worn the label. I've been lurking here for a while... It's comforting to know that I'm not alone in my strangeness creativity and sheer awesomeness! I love seeing how others interpret this lifestyle, both here on the boards and in literature.
IRL I'm a second grade teacher. The kids always love being in my class (She does the COOLEST things... and she has a cape!) but the oddity-factor sometimes makes the parents wonder how I managed to land a job. I've been living inside my own head for a long time, refraining from saying a lot of things simply because I'm tired of having to explain myself... my friends and family look at me askance often enough as it is!  It's nice to find a place where I can say "I'm thinking about sewing a corset" and people won't question my sanity.
Anyway, that's enough about that. I think I've rambled more than enough about myself. Smiley

Call me Dragonflai.  I'm 25 and female.  I live in Colorado, though I recently got off the road - I had been traveling the country working at various Renaissance Faires.  Now I'm unemployed.  Sad

Working the Faire put me in contact with various forms of Steampunkery, and I worked for a shop I shall not name which sells, among other things, spring steel-boned Victorianesque corsets, and wound up with a black overbust.  I had always thought I would hate Victorian clothing, but after wearing the corset to work 2 days/week, 10-12 hours/day for 6 weeks and finding I could breathe well enough to sing, sit, stand, pick things up off the ground, and even (barely) eat in it, I fell in love.  Kiss

(To anyone who is now considering looking up this vendor to work for them, be aware that they are a terror of an employer. Angry )

Also, a friend introduced me to Leviathan (juvenile, but adorable) by Scott Westerfield, and I had seen Steamboy (the anime) some time ago.  I soon became obsessed, and bought about 60 carved shell cameos on eBay (by the way, if you ever need one, PM me  Grin ) and several clocks to make into Steampunk jewelry.  I also scoured the 'net for the perfect pair of low-cost goggles, and wound up buying a pair of the famous "German goggles" from Georg-Schmerler.  I recently attended a costume party as a Fae Fancier, with a lace net and several other pieces of useful fae-catching equipment, and plan to keep up that theme.  I posted pics in the dress-up thread.

Though I have dabbled in punk/goth culture, I am first and foremost a geek.  I can only really learn the ins and outs of a culture/subculture by studying it scientifically, and know social niceties only by rote memorization, so pardon me if I do something that offends, and please correct me gently so that I know what to do differently next time.  Also, don't expect me to know the names of songs, bands, singers, politicians, historical figures, people I've recently met, people I've known for years...I'm very bad with names. ^_^;

I hope to get to know all you wonderful people and explore your unique corner of the time-space continuum!

Hello Everyone,

I'm Caboose (my name being inspired by RvB) and I'm actually here to do a little research for a Steampunk novella that I'm writing. I have enjoyed and been interested in Steampunk since I discovered it about 2 years ago while crawling through the net. My office is actually decorated in what I would call a Victorian Naturalist/Steampunk style. Alas, no pictures, but maybe one day.

I'm not as crafty or technologically inclined to make things (though my imagination wishes I was), but I hope to express my Steampunk love in my writing and possibly a few future, smaller crafts.

I'm 26, female, married, and living in Florida.

Thanks!

Hello hello. Smiley

I go by Gravedust online, and I joined this forum so I could post my avatar.

...

...Actually that's a bit backwards, my avatar was created for these forums specifically. (Though I am using it in a couple places now) I'm a graphic designer by trade, do a lot of print work and a little web stuff as well.  I've had an abiding interest Steampunk for a while and as a recovering WoW addict (ICC11/12, 5.8kGS when I quit) I'm looking to fill my newly vacated spare time by joining a new community.

My interests include music (all kinds), art (specifically sketching, inking and CG colored) writing, books and graphic novels as well as Forum and tabletop roleplay and other forum games, as well as tabletop/forum game design. I have vague hopes of getting into programming soon so I can present these as actual video games, but at the same time I like the interpersonal contact of traditional tabletop and forum Arr-Pea. I am a pretty good Forum GM, and a terrible Live GM. Wink I do have a steampunk-themed game project in progress, currently being alpha-tested by some friends of mine who are also into forum RP. I won't lie, I've been drawing some ideas and inspiration from this forum, and in a lot of ways it's been a tremendous help when I find myself stuck one one little thing or another.

I'm also interested in learning more about modifying objects to be more steam-y. Part of what brought me back around to Steampunk after a long absence was seeing the Maverick conversions that had been done. They were pretty inspiring and it seems like a fun hobby to take up.

So yep.. That's things in a nutshell. Pleasure to meet you all, you seem to have a nice friendly community going here and I look forward to (hopefully) being able to add to it. Smiley

Take care,
~Grave
