Spending time and effort getting a decision on if a "!" should be included in one phrase in a set of documents. Doing so means stopping an existing print run.....

Major Willoughby Chase

Ive never heard of it being a legal requirement but most companies normally ask for two references.
This dosent always have to be in writing unless they ask for it, they normally just ask for the names and addresses of someone who would give you a reference.

Have a read at this site   http://www.quintcareers.com/job_references.html

I don't believe its a legal requirement to have _any_ references.

I've certainly intervewed/employed people previously, working in conjunction with a knowledgable and experienced HR department, and it's not been a requirement.

CRB - legal requirement,  references - company policy.

As far as I know*

*Could be wrong.

I too have recruited and interviewed people, CRB is a legal requirement if working ALONE with Vulnerable people example children or the aged, references are a matter of company policy, look at your contract with them, did you supply them with two points for the references if so you complied with your part of the contract, their mistake if they failed to follow it up as you complied with your part of the contract, they cannot terminate for breach of contract, if you didn't supply two then you are in breach of the contract and they can terminate the contract.

Major,
I agree with Professor Oilcan that it is more likely to be a contractual issue than a legal one as former employers are generally under no legal obligation to provide a reference.  However, if you didn't supply two references and it was contractually required and they have allowed you to work for nearly two years without dealing with the issue then they could be seen to have accepted that breach of contract irrespective of any other problems that may have occurred in that time.  I hope that makes sense and of course is only my humble opinion.

It is also possible of course that there's been a change of personnel in the HR dept and they are trying to get all the paperwork straight 'a new broom' as it were.

As to legal requirements for referances: If they say they require two to hire you, and you didn't give them, and they hired you anyway; than they have ignored their own requirements for hiring. There is no fault on you. If they require a new referance to keep you, ask specifically to see the cluse that state this requirement that an existing employee needs to supply two referances to maintain a position they currently hold. Look in that statement for anything that would preclude the use of your current employer, themselves, as referances.

If they are requiring referances from existing employees, and refusing to give them to employees... Start looking at going over the heads of the paper and tape trapped management to somebody who is hopefully bright enough to identify un-useful clumbsy beaurocracy tripping on itself.

As to my gahS of the day: Having some creative things in mind and catching a bit of a program in which the most nightmareish horror of a seafood kitchen/landfill is being run and the chef who remodels and brings it up to wonderful, and then we are told at the end that the owner has had to close again a few months later because of he's made a mess of it again and needs to fix it.
The Gaaah part is I'll be having nightmares about the bio hazard of a place, AND NOW I CAN"T REMEMBER WHAT CREATIVE PROJECT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN WORKING ON.

Oh and also the fact that I gain a bit of relaxation by playing a game with my brother inlaw, only now the cheats and buy in have started coming in and throwing their might around. Either using cheats and bots to overrun the game feild and force out other players, or spending several hundred dollars to get the edge and again force out the more casual friendly gamers.

How do people forget what gaming is? It's play. I think I'm about done with gaming with others. They are bent on beating everybody, at all costs, as if it's all they can do to give them any feeling of worth. I'd feel sorry for them if it weren't for the fact that they are destroying the game and friendly interaction that we all enjoyed until they came along.

There are two sorts of CRB check- I needed a standard one to do my current job, which doesn't involve contact with children where I am alone, and an "Enhanced" one for the Learning Volunteering I do (at the same institution), which does.

With respect to references most people when they start out give school teachers or university lecturers as their first referees, and then move on to prior employers.

Part-time supply teachers in my dept who can't, or won't take help and advice when it's given.  Two weeks ago, after a complaint, I had a meeting with this individual to explain my expectations and what they needed to do to sort things out.  I busted a gut to help them out, showed them what to do, where to find resources, and which kids they needed to concentrate on to keep their parents on side, as you'd expect a head of dept to do (IMHO).  I may as well have talked to the bloody wall.  I walked into work this morning to find myself cornered by senior staff, asked to explain what I'd done because another complaint had come through, and sort it out.  So I've had to do some investigating, call an irate parent to calm them down, look at the work the children were doing, find out that someone didn't take a blind bit of notice, and give the teacher a bollocking, then report back to management.  I hate conflict, but I also don't like getting crap for someone else's laziness, bad attitude and list of excuses a yard long.

You need to ask where they are calling from and their private number so that you can call them when it is more convenient for you, and inconvenient for them. Being on a do-not-call registry helps, if there is one. Australia has one but there are ways around it for companies and various exceptions that are allowed to call you.

My GAH?
I was wandering through campus today, feeling rather pleased with myself after getting my highest marks yet Cheesy There was a religious... thing going on, where a group of Christians were walking down campus singing. Now I'm by no means racist, but they really were the stereotypical group of black Christians singing loudly and energetically with tambourines... the whole lot.
Now one of them stopped to talk to me, she asked; "Do you believe in our Lord God?". I'm a practising Christian, and quite proud of it. I replied that yes, yes I did. This seemed to throw her, so she asked;
"And do you believe in our saviour Jesus Christ?" and again I replied yes. She seemed quite put out but quickly rallied and started yelling;
"Now look here people! You should be like this young man h-". Now I am a rather shy person, so I interrupted her and asked that she not shout about me. The look of disgust she gave me was quite startling, and then she said;
"Well obviously you don't believe that much, do you?" and walked off.
I have never been so close to punching someone in my life. I've been the butt of may jokes about my faith, but for a 'Christian' to tell me that I'm not 'faithful' enough was the most insulting thing I've heard!  Angry

I had that at quite a young age from my church elder, apparently I was too much of a rebel to be Christian.  Long hair, tattoos, drinking, smoking, heavy metal... he failed to see the irony of him complaining about me being a rebel when he was supposedly worshiping the biggest rebel ever, *sigh*

Tell them it's harassment and you're going to call the police if the continue to call you. Obviously this only works with someone calling repeatedly, but it does tend to be taken seriously.

We have something simular to this here in Holland. It works, but only with the unwanted, unknown callers. When you have any kind of bonus card, that store also have your phonenumber. When you are listed at a store, they are allowed to call. Many stores have a customers database, gathered by information given when you get a bonus card. The same goes for unwanted advertising leaflets. The stores just send them to you personally, by post.

My Gahhh!
Having the finger pointed at me for a problem which, not only was not of my making, but one where I told anyone who'd listen ( and a few who wouldn't) that we were heading towards and still no action taken.
Resulting in my boss has having to write off £1500 worth of work to a client who never had any intention of paying us in the first place ( as I told everyone 6 months ago!)
