What your guilty pleasure ? What you feel ashamed to love ?

Melancholy. It is so out of fashion in our happiness-at-all-costs society.

Right now, the angels thing, hands down.  Friends make fun of it and people think I'm into the fluffy treacle.  (Those who know me should be able to guess that I'm not; I like the old-school angels if you catch my drift).  They are starting to have a real if symbolic meaning for me, which is double-embarrassing, though when things get meaning they remain satisfying, if a guilty pleasure.  If you knew my intellectual background and associations you'd know why.  Heh, and those angels didn't just look like people with wings...

(...though parts of me are happy that Dr. Who made that image scary again...)

I share the sometime liking of bouncy, catchy, "irritating" techno dance music.  ("Sss...Aaa...Fff...Eee...Ttt..."  Cheesy )  I like all sorts of other music also, though, depending on mood, so I don't find that all that as embarrassing a pleasure.

And...someone has to say this...just when did it become illegal for men to like chocolate?  It used to be an Aztec warrior drink, for the luvvaMike.  And very holy.  Why aren't men allowed to like chocolate any more (and still like girls)?

Lady Gaga... but you know what? I really think she's awesome. I listen to practically every kind of music, so someone eventually mocks something, but this is one that I get harshly berated for.

Cardcaptor Sakura. The dubbed version, which makes me an even worse person.

Wow this post is not making me look good...

Nikola Tesla; for what it's worth, I take most of my chocolate advice from a man and am always very excited to receive it!

I also love Lady Gaga, but I feel no guilt about it. Some people want to argue with me and convince me that I'm somehow wrong for liking her. I don't have any desire to argue back, and I honestly think they are missing out if they don't "get it."

I do, however, keep thinking that I don't like the Black-Eyed Peas, and then learning that I actually do. They've been a guilty pleasure for a while, but I'm beginning to lose my guilt over them as well.

Oh, you are beautiful! No really, you are, you're gorgeous! Space-age clockwork, I love it, I've got chills! Listen, I mean this from the heart - and by the way, count those - it would be a crime, it would be an act of vandalism to disassemble you.

But that won't stop me.

Confession:  the only familiarity I have with Lady Gaga's work at all is a couple of minutes of that one controversial video...

At least I'm not alone! I work in an academic bookshop with overqualified, sarcastic (and, I hasten to add, wonderful) booksellers so they don't tend to be of the opinion that they're missing out and usually go back to discussing Kant when they're done ridiculing me Wink

Re: Black-Eyed Peas - I keep having a similar experience with Timbaland. Which should perhaps be the source of actual guilt.

I agree about Lady Gaga. She's so made up and  created that I find her fascinating.

Although I don't care too much for Gaga's music, I'm intreagued by her style. She's so Glam, it's like 70's Bowie or Mr. Mercury. A high powered musical oddity.

Here's a pleasure that probably ought to make me feel guilty but doesn't:  those iced sugar cookies that have hit U.S. grocery stores so hard in the last few months.  Suddenly they are everywhere, and I mean everywhere, in the U.S. (I have been to several states and regions, and find them in grocery stores everywhere I go, sadly for my diet).  For those in other parts of the world, they are made of some unidentifiable dough material (foam rubber is a strong candidate), unimaginably soft even days after purchase (my last batch lasted a week and a half), and iced with something in the sugared-lard philosophy of cake icing (though again, it keeps far too well to be real lard) in bright colors with little jimmie candies in it.  They often have holiday or patriotic themes.  Keeping within my general taste and character, I always pick the most eye-popping, impossible-in-foodstuffs icing color in the whole display.

Someday I will realize better than intellectually that (a) if a desperate, starving Civil War soldier would have passed an item up because he did not recognize that it was supposed to be food, it probably really isn't and (b) if it keeps a week and a half or longer and is just as fresh as the day you brought it home, it's because the mold and bacteria present everywhere on earth recognize it as for all purposes inorganic or at least inedible.  But not today.

How can liking the gorgeous Ms de Pablo be a 'guilty pleasure'?..ie something you're ashamed to admit to?

My guilty pleasure?

Steven Segal movies. Embarrassed
Yes, yes I know..he can't act..he's got really fat..all the plots are the same etc etc..but there's something about his films that draw me in. I watch them knowing (with only a few exceptions) that they're going to be predictable rubbish but I can't stop!

I need help.

I was a huge King fan for many years...read everything..but once he got hit by that car he lost his 'mojo' as far as I'm concerned and now he just doesn't do it for me the way he used to.

Transformers. My earliest memories are of watching the G1 reruns on saturday mornings, and for the past 20 years, I've cherished those memories... only to find part of my room is now taken over by what I've lovingly dubbed the "TransPartments" for my 50 or so Transformers toys, including the two toys which are the pride of my collection: an original 1985 Perceptor and Transformers Animated Arcee.

Ah, I have a few, my favourite being my Alternator Sunstreaker (my favourite modern car in my favourite colour combo!)

All the music that I used to love when I was growing up as a kid. The Spice Girls, N*Sync... and I'm going to see the Backstreet Boys in August. Yes, that's right, stop laughing.

I didn't get to see them when they were here twelve years ago, so my best friend (who also loves them... we met through a conversation about them, actually) and I are going this time around. Grin I'm super excited.

It is quite cool to see a band you never got a chance to see when they were 'big' either because they never played near you or you were too young at the time. Back in the early nineties I went to see The Monkees 30th Anniversary Tour at Wembley Arena..they were great!!!

Krispy Kreme.

Then again I am not ashamed of my love for it, so it doesn't count as a guilty pleasure.

I had a secret love of Vanilla Coke. Used to rip the label off and carry a normal red-cap to swap with the cream one it had by default, because everyone used to mock my love of it.

Just wait, the new Coke machines have a few hundred different flavors in them, you'll be able to find any Coke ever in any machine.

For me it's over planning. It sounds weird but I love to make sketches beyond anything you'll ever need to build something. Source parts I may need in a lifetime but not now. Shop for reclaimed sources for things. It borders in the ridiculous the way I plan things out but it makes me happy. I think I have several hundred plans for ideas I will probably never get too, all in a heap somewhere. I love to plan Smiley
