Given that there was a vessel called the 'Beagle' - there is plenty of scope for vertebrate species nomenclature.
Mind you - I think Iain M. Banks has the best ever vessel names in his Culture novels.
H.D. - we need an updated assembly and paint detail picture to re-thread us!
If I recall there's a Ghast flagship in the Space Captain Smith books called 'Systematic Destruction' I recall that Douglas Adams mentioned the GSS Vengeance, the GSS Furious and the GSS Suicidal Insanity...

Gotta say Herr Doctor - all photoshop shenanigans aside - it is looking truly very good. I do like the little manoeuvring props on either side with their fat little six cylinder engines, not seen those before. Do you have a home for it when all is done? I would volunteer the services of my own living room, but Mrs. Mechanism Man has a thing about 4 foot Steampunk Dirigibles, says that they make the place look like a homage to Jules Verne, and apparently we're not going down that road again! Women, they know nothing of interior design... Hope that you manage to keep up the momentum, and keep the pictures coming - your fan base needs them! :-D

Thank you, MM! Praise from a craftsman is always welcome! I'm aiming to get it done for the MCM Expo at Excle on the last weekend of the month- along with a packing crate to keep it in, all antique'd up with War Ministry stencils on the side, wish me luck!

\Mind you - I think Iain M. Banks has the best ever vessel names in his Culture novels.
Is he the fellow who gave his ships names like "Decidedly Lacking In Gravitas" and "Stood Rather Far Back In The Line When They Handed Out The Gravitas"? (If that's him, he was interviewed on Prisoners of Gravity some years back.) If I recall there's a Ghast flagship in the Space Captain Smith books called 'Systematic Destruction' I believe there's an entire thread around here somewhere devoted to airship and æthership names. Give me a few minutes, and I might be able to find it. EDIT: Found it. It was the What would you name your airship? thread, currently spanning from August '07 to March '12.

The 'mind' ships in the Banks novels have names like 'don't try this at home' - or 'running with scissors'.

I think we're probably talking about the same chap. I've never read him, but as I said, Rick Green interviewed him on PoG some years ago. I recall he mentioned that he came up with the names I listed after someone accused him of giving his ships names that were "lacking in gravitas." (And thank you — I couldn't remember the fellow's name, but now I know who to look for next time I'm in Chapters.)

I've been lurking at this thread for quite a while now. I love your WIP pictures. I might have a suggestion. It seems the model isn't very heavy and it's held up by two rods. You don't need those two rods. What if you use piano wire for ropes? Piano wire is ridgid enough to keep up some weight, as long as the wire isn't to long. This way you can hang (or rather keep up) your model above the pedestal. Trick is to find the right wire, the right length of the wires and the right position to make this work. A small study with an object with about the same weight and dimentions might help. If my explaination doesn't make any sence, feel free to ask. My head often thinks differently than my hands write, combined with English not being my first language might get the message lost in translation.
Again, wonderful work.

Or support it with 4 wires (front, back, both sides) attached to a cross frame like a marionette. Then it's a simple case of a small motor and some gears and you can get it to pitch and yaw (or whatever airships do) gently above your head. Or more interestingly if you want to borrow an idea from the inspirational Reuben Margolin and his kinetic sculptures.

Or suspend it on two wires, attach them to a ceiling fan (on a very low speed), and watch it cruise in circles.
I did this once with a model plane. Worked great until someone switched the fan to "high". Served him right when the plane went shooting off across the room and hit him in the head-
On second thought, it's a bad idea, don't do this.

The model is designed to be walked around so it can be viewed easily from all angles, by a ship yard crew , so the current arrangement is best, however I would add some LED up lighters to the plinth to make it as though it has searchlights picking it out. Small LED torches would, rewire them into a single circuit. Of course I would get a sound chip array and record a fanfare for it and and audio of its name when you press an elaborate button.
This is a fairly large model, I believe Herr Dok needs to post a photo to show is true size.

If it's a 'Shipyard model', then shouldn't it be in a Shipyard? A scale model of the aerial 'Graving Dock' with the warship berthed to have Her bottom scraped would be lovely. Shouldn't involve that much extra work, Dok.

Okay.
Iam goingto go waaaaaaaaaay out on a limb here and make a negative comment on the model thus far.
I do realise that this will trigger the local appreciation society hit squad and that my life as I know it is forfeit.
But....
I don't like the 'nacelles' that are at either end of the side cylinders fitted to either side of the model.
The rectangular shape emerging from the hull, and turning 90 degrees and into a tube just looks like vacuum cleaner fittings to me.
Given the option to change it, I would have gone with the side cylinders finishing into a larger diameter sphere on each end that was then connected back to the hull.
Okay - now I need to go underground.
