I think that, if it were to return, it would have to take place between the series and the film. It definitely wouldn't be the same without Wash and Book. Whedon would never go for it. You can't do peril when you already know who lives and who dies.

Unless you go the 'timey-wimey' time travel route and bring everyone back from the dead. But the main reason they wouldn't bring Firefly back is Nathan's middle-aged spread.

I don't think that "Firefly" could return, today, and satisfy fans. The expectations would be mythic and the pointed absence of two characters would change the dynamic greatly.
At this point, sadly, we are better off with our perfect 13 episodes and damn fine film.
I think that, if it were to return, it would have to take place between the series and the film. It definitely wouldn't be the same without Wash and Book. The most you could get at this point is a movie. Maybe they will finish the trillogy?
Realistically, I think it was better suited for TV. I think having a different story set in the same universe would work.
I like both your ideas. I as well approve of these ideas. Maybe we could explore the events before the series better? The formulation of the Alliance and the settling of the new system. Or perhaps the story of a group of Browncoats during the war. 'Mal' and Zoë could make a cameo appearance.

Just announced at Comic-Con/San Diego, there will be a Firefly TV special/documentary to air on the Science Channel on Nov 11. Apparently Comic-Con's scheduled Firefly 10 year reunion panel discussion with the cast will be the core of the special. markf http://blastr.com/2012/07/whedon-fans-rejoice-new-f.php

Recieved my Mal pistol today. It's very nice. The problem is it doesn't fit any of my holsters and the 'official' ones are three times the cost of the gun itself. Doh!

How could I have missed this?! I fell in love with this show (and film) when I first watched it several years ago. I had heard of the film first, then found out it was based on a TV series so I decided to watch those first. I'm glad I did! I have the Firefly box set and the DVD of Serenity and have watched both many times (I've even bought the soundtrack, the opening song still gives me goose bumps). I've also been trying to encourage a colleague at work to watch them and he did borrow them for a few weeks but never actually watched any. Too busy playing Halo apparently.

I was always kind of assumed they were in the rarely-seen Core Worlds and that rich caucasian families took Asiatic names (Tam and Wing to name a few and the occasional white aristocrat in an Asian-inspired outfit) to assimilate/rise in society. We rarely saw them as they were rarely Outer Worlds-poor, soldiers or even away from the Core.
It also occurs to me I based that on very little, but that's where my mind went.

Unless the TARDIS materialized on board, then went back & rescued Wash & Shepherd Book. There is talk of a Star Trek/Dr. Who crossover, so why not a Firefly/Dr. Who crossover?

As much as I love the characters from the original series ,they could use an entirely different crew on a different ship and i'd be happy just to see more of the firefly universe. maybe a cameo or 2 to sweeten the deal.

Another option, put out here purely for discussion: Do what they did with Battlestar Galactica, re-boot the series? Would that even work? (I haven't watched more than a few clips of Firefly, haven't seen Serenity, or the new BSG; however I have watched the original BSG back when I was a kid)
What do people think of re-making a series?
I Suppose you could fast-forward in the timeline like Star Trek TNG...

It annoys me that Whedon seems to look down on the fans of Firefly. Unlike Roddenberry, who always had the utmost respect for his fans.
I'd like to see a reboot of the show as well. With perhaps more visits to the core worlds. My favorite episode was "Ariel."

I agree, the impression I've gotten from Whedon is nothing but respect for the fans. From what I heard (but this may be hearsay), he commented in the last Comic Con panel, deadpan, that he and the SciFi channel had agreed to begin production on a reboot of the series. Then later called fans "idiots" when they didn't realize he was joking.

That last post seemed uncharacteristic of Joss Whedon, so I went searching for a source, and couldn't find one. Below is the only reference I could find to Whedon using the word "idiot" in the last Firefly panel (link to source follows): “1:35 p.m.: Time for one more clip and one more question. The clip is Mal talking to Simon at the end of the pilot. Mal notes that they’re still flying. Simon: “That’s not much.” Mal: “It’s enough.” Jensen asks Whedon about how “We’re still flying” has become a big mantra for the fan community, asks him again what the fans mean to him. Whedon’s struggling here. He’s overcome, and the fans call out, “We love you, Joss!” Fillion is crying for real, has very red eyes, and now there’s a standing ovation, again, and Glau is crying, and now the actors are all giving Whedon a standing ovation as well. Maher and Glau hug, Baldwin pats his heart to show how touched he is. Whedon: “ Only an idiot would actually try to follow that with a sentence. When you come out of a great movie, you feel like you’re in that world. You come out of ‘Brazil,’ and suddenly everything is duct piping and everything’s weird and too much. You come out of certain things, and the world has become that. when you’re telling a story, you’re trying to connect to people in a particular way… The way in which you guys have inhabited this world, this universe, have made you part of it, part of the story. You are living in ‘Firefly.’ When I see you guys, I don’t think the show is off the air. I don’t think there’s a show. I think, that’s what the world is like. I think there are spaceships, there are horses, and our story is alive.” More applause, and then another round follows as the actors wave to the crowd one more time.” — From HitFix.com’s live blog of the Firefly 10th Anniversary panel. http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/joss-whedon?before=1342213162Come check out " Legend of the Snow Queen," a steampunk graphic novel in progress, on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/legendofthesnowqueen

Straight away, I'll say this: Joss, do not bring back the show. I respect your choice to kill both Wash and Book in Serenity. But without them, the show would be missing so much. For me, Wash was the 'Xander' and Book was the 'Giles' of Firefly. Both characters seem devoid of those special gifts or abilities that define the rest: River is psychic, Simon a doctor, Jayne a general combat badass, Mal and Zoey the war veterans. Despite their lack of defining aspect, they serve as the heart and conscience of the crew. With them gone, the stories of internal conflict are diminished, leaving only Inara to be the only voice of sanity with any weight.
I would love nothing more than for Firefly to return, and I think Joss is one of the few writers/directors that could make it happen properly. But there is an inherent risk: you either further the masterpiece, or you mess it up, alienating the fans who have kept with you and the idea for 10 long years (Mass Effect 3 anyone?).
Now to a more 'fan-boy'ish response. I have never been able to decide on a favorite episode. Each one has some truly great moments, it is almost impossible. However, if I had to choose, it would be 'Out of Gas'. Not only does it give some amazing character development, it also touches on the back story of Serenity and her crew, something the series did not get to explore a great deal.
