Hmmm...

I'll have to see if I can find a recording of that scene someplace before I answer for certain, but if you are referring to the quotation about the person who wants to be king, then yes, I think that's probably where it comes/came from. Wink
--------------------------------------
Jack and Bailey are going to rescue Frank and Zhan, if that's ok, by using the Beau Rosin; as long as she stays out of phase, she can "fit" even into a small room, which is part of the reason why teleportation-type time vehicles are always accompanied by dialogue about materializing inside of something solid, dense, and lethal; if the power goes out or somebody trips and triggers the "off" button, the machine and its occupants, if they are visible at all, become a sort of highly-detailed bas-relief... But the Beau Rosin has a capacitance-powered circuit that forces the system to keep running until it is clear of such features, or as in this case, while it is still inside of them. Usually...

I hope I haven't overstepped. The dot that disappeared does not necessarily have to be a dead character; they could simply have been knocked out of the teleport, or too badly injured to show up on the screen.

I still haven't completely worked out the complete workings of the Scan Tank (the idea dates back, under a different name, to the RP Steam London: Realms of Aether; it was a heavily-used Navigational feature of Dreyfuss' aerial warship, the St. Elmo), so how it recognizes scannable things is still up for grabs, so to speak. Mainly, it operates like a steamy version of radar, in that it displays the surroundings of the ship it is installed on, using the aether signatures that bounce off of or are emitted by them. The energy is green because...well, because the St. Elmo was where the device first was used, and the nautical phenomenon 'St. Elmo's Fire' is supposedly green.

A portable version of the device was temporarily installed aboard the Beau Rosin by the character MW Brantley (sometimes I wonder if I might be schizoid...) in the heavily-time-travel-oriented Group Novel The Extended Steam Salon in the Metaclubs section. Also see The Blazing Gun Saloon in the same section; no scan tank, or not much, but it's a cracking good story as well, and both will give background on the Beau Rosin, Brantley, Mad Jack, Miss Sally, and the A.U.N.T.S.A.L.L.I. organization.

Also, Mad Jack makes his first (and very brief) appearance in a late series of posts in which he comes up with the shipname Beau Rosin and plays the banjo inThe Steaming Rat RP here in the Portrayal section).

I'm thinking of having Mad Jack and Mingh go riding off into the subgalactic gloaming so that the gang can all get back together and go to Venus (assuming that's still the plan); perhaps have Jack determine that that is where Shi-Markia and the others have gone, and then have them (Jack and Mingh) agree to rendezvous with the Badger and Crew on Venus if they can (leaving it open so that they could have difficulties and not appear, thus freeing up story space)?*

Or would it be too much like creating a Dr. Who knockoff (I may have already done that inadvertently)?

Shi-Markia is waiting until the Swift-on-Wing has left and is on it's way before 'landing' on the ship. Hopefully I'll put in more later about why exactly (or not so exactly) Frank and Zhan got diverted from the course to the Metezoin place, how they were able to get in, ect. (there IS a reason. Maybe.) Because right now the scenario doesn't make a lot of sense and seems contradictory. It might not make any more sense afterwards either, but I'll try.

I'm thinking Mingh at least should stay around long enough to get rid of Shi-Markia, (whether staying in story or showing up later) and that might end up being on Venus somewhere.

Not a problem, it's an opportunity for killing redshirts, er, adding tension to the 'between' traveling.

I meant your name, actually (I thought that's what I wrote, sorry for the confusion, Tongue stayed up a bit too late last night)

It's the part where Daniel orders/tricks one of the younger soldiers outside the post at Khyber pass into marching in place, and when one of the officers comes out of the building and sees him, says, if I recall correctly, something that sounds a lot like "Put Mw Bailey on report, he's drunk again." The pronunciation is kind of strange and makes it difficult to tell, but the name's in that scene a few times.

It just seemed like an extremely odd coincidence otherwise.

LOL & OMG...

OMG because it's another eerie coincidence  Shocked, and LOL because this is not the first time somebody noticed that apparent correspondence.

I had completely forgotten that scene; I haven't actually seen the whole movie, let alone the scene in question, for nearly ten years (I think). Now that you've brought it up, I remember lots of instances (a few on BG, even) in which people have asked me if I got the name MWBailey from The Man Who Would Be King, cited such and such a scene without being very specific (one person misplaced the scene entirely and said it was after the one where Peachy was training the rifles -or was it muskets?).

And now...well, its just odd, like fate, that it's in a movie about an exploit - albeit not by the movie's MW- in India, Nepal, and the Hindu Kush, like a perfect quasi-RL backstory for my MW Wink. Maybe the next time I use it...

So, no, that isn't where it came from, and yes, its an extremely odd coincidence Tongue...

My "mwbailey" moniker is my last name and first two initials. This RP, by the way, is the first long-term one where I've used my own name as a character's name. (Several early entries in The Clutch in metaclubs here on BG is the very first. A rather abortive attempt, as I remember).

------------------------
Hmmm... OK, Mingh stays, and i guess Jack as well, at least until Shi-Markia is killed. Nice use of the redshirt villain elimination opportunity, by the way Wink...

I'm off to a practice session with the North Harris County Dulcimer Society for an upcoming recording session that they will hopefully let me participate in. *knocking on everything wooden that he can find*

I may not be back til 9 pm; maybe earlier than that, however. It just depends on how well we know the tunes already. (Come to the Bower, 1830's version, is new to us - not the same as the Irish Traditional song of the same name).

I don't really listen to music while writing, but I discovered last night (after the radio was left on all day) that writing like this with heavy metal and hard rock songs stuck in your head can be kind of surreal...

Got the notches more or less done on my khukhuris, (though I'm not exactly happy with them just yet) and got pieces of wood rough cut out for the sheaths. Almost ended up making them out of, heh, of all things, Masonite. (Turned out the piece was being used and wasn't scrap, but that would have been some interesting irony.)

Also found a strange washer that I'll have to get pics of, in the top of a box of old used washers. Might end up using it as a concho or something on the sheath.

Hope I haven't stepped ahead too far, I really wanted to include that part.

Might I tentatively suggest, if this is a new chapter, The Evening Star or Morning Star something similar? Morning star is the name given to Venus when it appears in the east before sunrise. (I don't know, just popped into my head while I was thinking about this, looked it up, and it's actually a real 'name' for Venus.)

If you already have something, not a problem. Just some thoughts

Sounds great to me...

Will The Company of the Bea Rosin catch the slippery Drene-vah Villains?
Will the Dragon Corps ride again?
Read on in the next Chapter!

Red Sands and Red Swords: The Morning Star

----------------------
No worries, Jack's going to be at the cutoff point in just a bit, and the Badger's volleys and remembrances needed to be done.

I'm thinking the Beau will get there just as the drene-vah's ship (what was it's name again?) arrives and a few broadsides will be fired (whether the drene-vah ship gets fragged is up you you), while Bailey and Kirza flit down to the surface after the Beau's scope shows the teleporting dragons dots go there, and Bailey, Kirza, and Mingh flit there, and Rodney transposrts the rest, to act as an 'advance party' before the Mad Badger arrives and sends in the heavy regulars, so to speak...

Good stuff! Cheesy

Attempted a (partial) explanation of the 'finding the star' part. Tongue

The Drene-Vah have come to the erroneous conclusion, somehow, that Bailey is the one responsible for 'transporting' the Beau Rosin. Among other explanations could be that they know everything Zhan knew at the time that Bailey disappeared, which didn't include the Beau Rosin's operation or real capabilities. If they got the part about Jack and 'time travel', I guess they didn't believe it or really know what it meant.

Might come up later, might not.

I'll try to tone down with the Drene-Vah 'getting away' so much now, I just want to set up the opportunity for a long story. Hope it's alright. (I heard once that playing villains is about losing, but losing well. I'm still attempting to find a balance, so if it's too far or too fast let me know.)

Well, as long as the villain doesn't kill off the heroes/heroines. Mustn't make it too  easy for them...

Jack will be tracking Shi-Markia, however; there's an odd little energy signature that keeps showing up in weird places, like moving through apparently-solid rock formations at about the same pace that a Moon Dragon would adopt when moving around in tunnels and caves. He'll have to tell Bailey and Mingh and the others about it or bust, or maybe blow his pants off from keeping his mouth shut (sorry, reference to old expression, "if they taped his mouth shut he'd blow his pants off" Cheesy)... Maybe Mingh-Shrighk will get close enough to see Shi-Markia...

I hope she feels better now, poor sweet lil car...

*ahem* 'scuse my digression...

In any case, I hav eto force myself into bed now. believe  me, I'd rather stay up and write with you all night. Maybe tomorrow night, or sometime soon...

perhaps you need a stealth keyboard?

Mingh finally got Shi-Markia. ...but then again, maybe not. Wink Shocked

I think either she or the Drene-Vah might end up getting the star back, at some point though.

Seemed OK to me...

But I know what you mean. That's why I often say that a character said something, but am vague to  non-quotational as to the wording of the dialogue. It takes care of the response problem without putting the actual words in the character's mouth -- er, at least that's my intent...

-----------
I actually posted my most recent right after your addition, so I had to add that bit about Jack not paying attention to the convo in the cabin. I've also been thinking about how Rodney might come to damage something on board, and decided he'd do it just so he could get Jack to attack him, thus giving him an excuse to put the cuffs on him...

I'm also thinking that the Blackbox trip to New Purgatory was such a traumatic experience that Rodney doesn't want to risk a long interplanetary trip again until he has a chance to get the theory-and-repair folks back home to look at his unit.

Heh, true. (yes i mean the first part) I was in a kind of odd mood yesterday, I think eating something for lunch that was 1/3 sugar might have had something to do with it.

The Drene-Vah were never at the station, but they were testing a way of 'remote writing' things, which is why the stuff is so badly drawn. (and doesn't work very well) I wasn't planning on having them show up soon, (at least enough time for ship repairs, if they do come there at all.) but things are always subject to change.

BTW, while awaiting the complete refit of the Mad Badger ("...could take weeks, sir, parts are in short supply this far out, doncha know..."), Captain Grey has proceeded ahead to the Moon to discuss delivery of the artifacts with Loftis, and to take a brief sojourn home to his London club on Earth, where he has quite accidently encountered...

Mr. Cornelius Nightshade.

No, really.  I ran into Jim at the Smoking Room, and we're happily tearing into each other in the most polite and civilized fashion.  To enjoy the bloodshed, pick up the thread at:
