This was made (not by me) for an exhibit at the National Archives in London.

It's a usable version of Wheatstone's telegraph. For the exhibit, there are two units about fifty feet apart,
and kids can use them.

The original (from 1858) looks like this.

The basic idea is that when you turn the input wheel at one end, the output dial at the other end turns in sync. Keeping things like that in sync was a problem; it took another 25 years before Edison finally nailed the "unison device" problem.
