This looks like a terrific project. I can't wait to try to make one for myself.
Thanks for post it.

Thats awesome. Let me ask though. If a person wanted to make say a John bull style, would it just take shortening the crown?

Yep, that would work. If you wanted the top to flare out, you'd bend the crown pattern into a frown. And if you wanted the crown to get smaller at the top, you'd bend the crown pattern into a smile.

I love it!. Now then, I have a pair of leather trousers that would only fit a person without hips so if I take them apart I might be be able to make one.

When I get the tooling leather and the time together in the same place and same time, I'm going to do a tooled design on the wide parts between the lacing slits of the crown.
Thanks for posting this, Mr. Banwell!

Thanks for the information, now there's ANOTHER project on my long list. Roughly, how much leather would it take to concoct one of these?

I couldn't tell you off hand, but if you figure the crown is 24" wide it should give you a pretty good idea.

Super interested in making one of these, but I'm pretty sure I have nothing to stitch the leather with, and hand sewing it would be unacceptable, right?

Ah, wonderful! Thank you for taking the time to make a tutorial and posting the link; I'm rather smitten with the design so I'll have to try my hand at the project.

On the contrary. Much of my leatherwork involves much handstitching. While it takes longer to do, I believe the quality to be superior often times. The five crown seams on this hat http://www.flickr.com/photos/tombanwell/4131091967/# were all handstitched.

I really like the "Out for a bit of fresh air" one the best. It's very atmospheric and carries hints of eerie otherworldness. Love it, and the stars to boot.

Well, I may have found my very first steampunk (or indeed, any garment) project! Now just to work out all the small, unnecessary bits, like how to sew Thanks, Mr. Banwell!

Ooh. I have a big bag full of leather scraps. How big should I make this if I want a mini-hat, the right size to attach to my head with ribbons, a headband, or hairclips, without being too heavy?

I should think you could make a circle with a tape measure and hold it up on your head, letting it out or taking it in until you had the right general size, and scale the pattern file up or down in your favorite image editing program until the crown piece had the same width as the measure you took for the circumference of the miniature hat. After all, there's no standard size for miniature hats, is there?
