I find a teacup to be a good size for a small hat. If you want a really mini one then try a site like this http://www.cynthiahoweminiatures.com/hatpattern.htm Its more a picture hat then a top but you can modify it. You'll end up with something like like this.

Ooh. I have a big bag full of leather scraps. How big should I make this if I want a mini-hat, the right size to attach to my head with ribbons, a headband, or hairclips, without being too heavy?

Actually tried this today, to see if a small one can be done in a thinner leather. just using the pattern Mr. Banwell provided at normal paper print size yielded this :
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

came out to about 3 inches tall by 3.5 wide by 4.5 long. it's almost the standard for the mini toppers (smallest size) and it was easy to attatch hair combs to make it wearable.

A big thank you to Mr. Banwell for posting this. what a fabulous project!
