Just thought I would share a couple pics of Mrs. Voltin and I that we took during our stay at the Rivertown Inn down in Stillwater MN.

Dear Steampunk Companions of Minnesota!  I am a born and bred gentleman of this blissful country and a card-carrying Steampunk. Besides cosplay, I am writing a couple of novels that use steampunk elements.

Is there any regular meeting of Minnesota Steampunks?  If not, I wish to coordinate one here on this Minnesota thread.  It is good weather to be togged up in lots of layers of clothes.  Let's discuss a date here, for the best turnout, but I will suggest a promenade around Lake Harriet in South Minneapolis as our inaugural event.

Other locations that might be fun for meetings:

  • the Depot, downtown, if we could get the big room (that I remember as the waiting room back when we had trains in Minneapolis), and could perhaps take tea together at the Renaissance Restaurant there.
  • the James J. Hill house in St. Paul, which is a beautiful period house open for tours.  If you haven't toured it, you are missing a lot of fun.  Railway Baron, James J. Hill built this house for his family overlooking the railways he built, and is now under the care of the Minnesota Historical Society.
  • Loring Park and the Walker's sculpture garden.
  • Summit Ave. in St. Paul near the Cathedral.  Stately Homes!
  • The American Swedish Institute, another fantastic old mansion.

Please feel free to recommend other locations of a suitably Victorian ambience!

I will throw out a date for the Lake Harriet Promenade (and picnic):  Sunday, October 23rd from two o'clock p.m. to five.

I hope this is far enough out to be possible for many of you.  I suggest we meet at the Lake Harriet Bandshell concession stand (next to the bandshell itself).  Meet at 2 p.m. and then start the promenade around the lake as soon thereafter as we are all assembled.

Please RSVP here on this thread if you are coming.  Walking sticks recommended.  Picnic baskets may be left in cars for the tea after the promenade.  If it is running that day, we could even ride on the old trolley that operates between Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun.

The parking lot by the bandshell is, I believe, now only for people with permits to use it.  There is parking on the parkway and on nearby streets in the neighborhood of West 42nd Street which runs up a steep hill from the concession stand, more or less.  Google map it.

Welcome Dr. Nautilus!

All of those ideas sound wonderful. My and wife and I love visiting the Rose Gardens at Lake Harriet. However we will once again be staying at the Rivertown Inn in downtown Historic Stillwater on the night of October 23rd. I noramlly have Sunday and Mondays off of work and my wife took that Monday off.

We will be going to the Minnesota Renaissance Festival again this year on Sunday, October 2nd. I am not sure if I will be going Steamed up or not as of yet. Good chance I will but my wife will most likely not be.

If I do I will be wearing my usual attire. Top hat, goggles, tail coat, driving gauntlet gloves, and red ascot with black vest.

Seems like more people enjoyed seeing a Steampunk couple then others. Did receive a few negative remarks from staff but for every negative comment there were three positive ones.

So if you are out that day and notice me please stop me and introduce yourself. I would love to chat for a moment.

Dr. Nautilus,

I really like the James J. Hill house idea. I live in Pig's Eye (Saint Paul) and have not been there since I was a child. Sign me up!

I too would like to make another appearance at the Ren Fest and my usual wizardly attire is getting old, so I like your idea.  We'll show them anachronism!  If we do not run into each other otherwise, let's plan to meet at the wine bar in the old scriptorium (by the waterwheel) at 2pm.  Will that work?

That sounds like a good place to met up.
My wife and I will try and make it out there before 2pm. Actually we will try and be out there before 1pm as I would like to see some of my friends from the 501st Legion (Star Wars Costuming group) of which I am also a member, compete in the Kilt competition. I don't believe they will be wearing Star Wars costumes but you never know.

I should not be to difficult to find if we do not make it to the waterwheel in time.

Looking forward to meeting you Dr. Nautilus!

My name is Victor by the way.

Wow that's funny, as my name is victor as well!

I'm not dressing in steam as my woman and I only have our Gypsy attire...
I was planning on going today (the 1st), but with how late i was out, I may as well go on the 2nd!

perhaps, if my bank allows, I may join you gentlemen near the mill?

That sounds good Victor. However we may not be out until a little later depending on when our friends make it over to our place. I am going to call them tonight and see if they will be able to make it over to our place early than they told my wife which was at 2pm.

I will not be hard to find I am sure. Just look for the gentlemen wearing the big top hat with two blonde ladies and a taller gent wearing some sort of hat.

Going to try and make it to the waterwheel at 2pm. If not we will stop there at 3:30pm.
I really wish had a time machine now.

Sorry that I missed you all out at Ren fest. Our friend's didn't make it to our place until 2:30pm and once we got there they wanted to go and get some food.

I just wanted to apoligize for missing you there. There is always next year. Or if we could organize a meet somewhere in the cities soon I would enjoy that.

No worries, Victor!  We will try our lake harriet promenade on the 23rd.  I'm thinking we will need to gather about 4pm as I just realized in the morning that day is my Masonic lodge's Fall pancake breakfast fundraiser.  Maybe I should wear my steampunk togs to that too....  I shall be manning the steam waffle maker!

Then, we should plan another promenade/picnic before the weather turns too inclement.  Hard to imagine that, at the moment!

Hey there, Dr. Nautilus. If you don't remember, this is Michelle from the Intuitive Forum. I've technically RSVP'd in person, but that didn't seem quite official enough. So, due to the horribly busy and scatter-brained life I lead, I thought I might join Brass Goggles specifically to RSVP today. Though as soon as I looked at the site I think I nearly had a heart attack. This might just become my favorite site to visit. If he still wants to go, I might be bringing a friend of mine as well. I didn't even know he was into steampunk until he got excited over one of the many pocketwatch necklaces I often wear. It'll be wonderful to meet up with other people. Keep in touch!

Lady Feyrin,
It was a pleasure to escort you on the promenade today.  It was very fortuitous that the sun shone and the rain let up so our event was not banjaxed.  We certainly did impress a few people!  I look forward very much to our next outing and will be looking for somewhere indoors for a high tea.  You were, as always, perfectly charming.

By the way, I do apologize if anyone came at four instead of three.  I assume not, but do let me know if you were misled by my earlier post as regards the time of the promenade and I will do penance most humbly.

Steaming Tea in St. Paul

Alright, yes, it's me again.  I hope you Minnesota steampunks are reading this because I found a lovely tea room in St. Paul called Lady Elegant's Tea Room.  So, I would like to suggest we get together for High Tea.

November is a bit of a sticky wicket for me because of Teslacon and Thanksgiving Day. However, I had thought that a "Christmas Tea" in early December might work.  Lady Elegant has a special event Christmas Carol tea that will include one of the Guthrie actors from A Christmas Carol.  However, it might be cheaper and less crowded if we had our own event on a different day.

How does Saturday, December 10th at 3:30 sound?  If there are to be more than six of us we will have to pay 50% down in advance, and in any case reserve a time for the sitting.  Hey, they even have gluten-free options!

RSVP to this as soon as you can and no later than November 15th, so I can reserve our time.

Being a Minnesota man m'self (Elk River first, then Minneapolis), I'd like to invite all you Northlanders to visit (and perhaps join) the Gentlemenn's Gadgeteer Society on facebook.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Gentlemens-Gadgeteer-Society-of-London/116853635074859

Its really just a venue to show off... which you'd better enjoy doing if you're a steam punk.

Please come by, post images of your creations, make observations, and enjoy the works of other creative folks!

Dr.Nautilus

Unfortunately I will not be able to join you all for tea on the 10th of December. My sister in law is organizing a surprise birthday party for my Father in law that day. At this point I am not even sure I have the day off of work or not Sad

There's a new Facebook group for Twin Cities Steampunks. Login and search for "TC Steampunk" and request to join, looks like it's a closed group to start. The goal is to potentially start:
"monthly Munches, Quarterly events, and eventually a yearly Steampunk ball."

Dear Everybody,

I checked out Lady Elegant's Tea Room and it is ideal for steampunk gatherings.  There are a couple of tables for larger groups of about six or eight.  However, I've decided to put off the tea until January.  The Dec. 10th date was just conflicting with too many other parties and holiday festivities. So, if you would like to have a gather in January, post your preferences for a date (a Saturday).

Thanks for the head's up on the Facebook Group.  I will apply for admission!

I wanted to give all of you a heads up about an event that you might be interested in attending.
http://steamcentury.wordpress.com/

However I will not be able to attend as I have already commited to a family event taking place that day. I live so close to the Minnesota History Center I could walk there.

On Saturday, September 8th Mrs. Voltin and I will be attending the Minnesota Renaissance Festival once again dressed in our Steampunk Time Traveller outfits.
We may possibly attend some Sunday as well. That depends if a few Steampunk Airship Pirate friends of ours choose to go some Sunday instead.

Anyway it would be very nice to meet some of you out there if you are planning on going.

Well after speaking with friends we have decided that it will most likely be on a Sunday when we all will attend. Hopefully I will not be forced to have to work whatever Sunday works best for everyone else. I will post when I know for sure.

Update: So now we are looking at Sunday the 23rd (Ocktoberfest) or the following Sunday on the 30th of September (Shamrocks and Shenanigans).

Should be a decent size group of Steampunk Time Travelers and Airship Pirates. Let the Shenanigans begin!
