For some months now the VSS have been looking at the feasibility of launching a hard copy full colour magazine aimed at the growing steampunk community. We are pleased to announce that work has now commenced on thsi project and we hope to publish the first issue in  few months time.

"The Time Machine" will be in A5 format so will be perfect for slipping in your bag, reading on the train etc.  It will be full colour virtually throughout so expect lots and lots of glossy pictures. Projected price is £2.95 per issue. For the first year it will be quarterly with a view to going bimonthly thereafter.

The magazine is aimed at Steampunk fundamentally but will encompass all aspects of what might be termed the "creative retro community".  Our objective is to be as inclusive as possible.

The first couple of issues are likely to be available through direct sale, limited vendors etc but we are negotiating a distribution deal for wider newstand coverage.

This is not just a teaser and advertisement however.  The VSS recognises the huge creativity of this community and is looking for your involvement.
1. We are looking for writers, photographers, artists and designers to work on the magazine.  Whether you want to contribute just a page or two or become a major contributor we are interested in your input.
2. We want to know what you want to read if you are a potential reader.
3. We are looking for advertisers who want to get their products, events and services into the public eye.
4. We are looking for vendors interesting in taking copies of the magazine with a view to resale.

The VSS are well known as a not-for-profit organisation but recognise that for people to contribute regularly to a project such as this there is a need for remuneration.  We envisage the first two issues as primarily establishing the magazine and allowing us to build a production team.  Therafter contributors will be paid on a page by page basis for their work. A chance to be a professional steampunk as it were!

The Time Machine is not intended to be a competitor of existing steampunk publications.  It is hoping to target a widening sector of the market which is clamouring for a glossy, colour hard copy publication. It is also hoped that it can be an entry publication for people interested in Steampunk who have yet to find their way into our wonderful community.

Potential contributors must be aware that this will require a realistic time commitment each quarter.  This is a professional publication with real deadlines.  Please do not offer to become involved unless you are able to work to those constraints.

Thank you

John

In the first instance potential contributors and staff should email with an outline of their experience and what they would like to become involved in to majortinker@aol.com

I would be happy to do the odd book/graphic novel review, Major, if you have an edition or mock up ready for Easter I can hawk it round the book publishers at Eastercon and angle for review copies to be sent to the VSS to be distributed to reviewers. Steampunk, alternate history, historical fantasy, and perhaps some advertising.

Show it to a few writers as well, see if they are interested.

Thanks Peter.  We are hoping to be well on the road by Easter so I'll see what I can do.

Thank you Herr Doktor.  I was going to approach you about the possibility of makes either illustrating a project or two of yours or persuading you do do a masterclass type thing.

I have received a lot of emails of support and some strong applications from contributors. The project seems to have lots of potential.

We are particularly looking for layout designers though.

Well, aside from being humbled by your consideration, a very, very, long time ago I was a set up artist for a typography company (back in the days when it was glued down to a layout board before reproduction), so I do have a little bit of experience in that regard:

Let me know if this is of interest!

PLEASE count me in!

I would love to contribute, therefore I volunteer as the 'Antipodean Correspondant' and I would love the opportunity to write on the growing Australian Steampunk community, profile people, cover events, etc.

Please le me know if any writing examples are required - I still have a copy of the Steampunk Manifesto I wrote for the 2009 Melbourne Writers Festival.

Thnk you very much indeed for your offers of support ladies and gentlemen.  I am feeling overwhelmed by the calibre of the volunteers and I feel we are looking at something which we can all be proud of.

It would be excellent to include features from outside the UK.  Of course we will only be able to offer very limited distribution to Australia and the U.S. (at least initially) but being able to access more of a World perspective is invaluable.

Timescale:  We would like to have the first issue ready for sale in May (and I would hope to bring some copies to the Steampunk Worlds Fair and the World Steam Expo in the US that month too.)   This means we would like initial contributions towards the end of February and in any case no later than March 13th.   We appreciate this is a very short deadline and if it becomes evident that we have no hope of hitting that we will push it back. Ideally though we would like to run for issue two being published at the end of August thus being available at The Asylum.

Contributions:  At this point we are looking for:

Expert makes:  Blog type articles on the construction of high end steampunk items. (Herr Doktor and Mad Uncle this is obviously a prime area for yourselves.)
Masterclass: Articles on a specific craft or art skill. (e.g. etching or paint patination)
Event reports: On the spot reviews and reports from steampunk events and gatherings.
Music and band features:  Initially we are looking for more in the way of "meet the band and get to know them" type reports rather than straight reviews.  There will be a seperate review column.
Feature Crew: There are a number of "airship crews" around the world.  This is a chance to celebrate their creativity. Articles about a specific small group of friends and their overall look.
Artisan features: A meet the maker feature showcasing their work.  These may be commercial makers, artists or hobbyists.
"Wow this place is great".  Articles on sites which are of specific interest to steampunks.
The Time Machine visits: features on other aspects of retro futurism and retro socialising.
Since this is a glossy, full colour magazine we would like photograpsh to support the above articles.

We are also looking for:
Steampunk Online:  Articles about sites we like to visit on the aetherweb.
Forthcoming book, music and film reviews. (We will be securing review copies and supplying them to selected writers) Submissions for review are very welcome.
Serious essays.  Philosophical or sociological articles on the community and where it is going.
Poetry. (We would like to feature one or two an issue)
A cartoon strip or single frame cartoons.
We will consider fiction but envisage this is more likely the province of Steampunk Tales or anthologies that we are supporting such as "Tales from the Asylum."

There will of course be diary features letting people know of future events and functions,  other fun features that will be revealled in issue one and editorial.

Naturally we will be carrying advertising.  Our projected advertising rate is from just £45 for a quarter page, £80 half page and £150 full page.  This is incredibly affordable and reflects our ideals to be a quality magazine not a commercial cash cow. Advertisers will also get a number of complementry copies they can distribute or even sell on if they wish.

We prefer contributions in Word format at present.  Photos as JPEGs.  Advertisers will need to supply their finished artwork.

Whilst this may seem an ambitious project steampunk is about creativity.  We have also shown with the VSS that simple determination to make something happen coupled with creativity means that things do get done.

Let us hope this is but the start of a "Grand Adventure".

As ever please email direct to majortinker@aol.com rather than pms etc.

Tink, if you think I'd be of any use, I'm in.

Actually, I'd appreciate it if I could submit only one article, as I've got a bet on with a freind to see who'd be published first  0_Q

For the moment we are happy to accept potential submissions so please feel free Sir.  If course we do not guarantee to publish anything Grin

We have had some very high calibre volunteers indeed with a history of publishing.  That does not mean we are not interested in new writers. Quite the opposite.  This magazine is to celebrate the eclectic creativity of the community.

Whether you do or not, I most certainly will be interested in purchasing The Time Machine once it is available here.

I myself would be very willing to do any kind of artwork that would need to be done.
I can send you a copy of my portfolio if need be and we can go from there.

Also, I would love to read about different Steampunk groups, not just here in The States, but all over the world.  I hope this helps.

I would be more than happy to do book reviews, although my experience n doing them has been mostly limited to IT books...

Also the odd cartoon - not sure if I still have any examples lying around though.

And if I get my act together this year, I will submit an artisan piece on myself Wink

I've done some advertising/cover layout in my time, and I'd certainly be up for doing some illustration.  My most relevant recent experience was a series of full page illustrations which ran in PC Gamer during '07 and '08.  I'm right in the middle of setting up a new portfolio (just started yesterday) which should be ready shortly.

Major, I'm very much looking forwards to holding the first issue in my hands.  Unfortunately, I have too little time right now to do anything other than offer support and enthusiasm.  Speaking of which, would you like me to put a link to this thread on the Network, or would you rather keep it on Brass Goggles for now?

As for what I'd like to see, well... I agree that there are probably better places for fiction.  I've heard a lot of small press publishers say that there simply isn't the market for short fiction to sustain a publication outside of small press circles.  People, apparently, would rather read about how to write their own.

However--and I may be alone in this--I'd quite like to see some sheet music in The Time Machine.  If any current bands would like to share than all the better, but I was thinking that you could print popular songs from the pre-vinyl era.  There are, I'm sure, a lot of musicans in the community and it would be great to hear them taking some old tunes and playing them at the various gatherings we have!

That and comics.  More comics are always good  Smiley

Sheet music is an excellent idea.  Now all we need is someone to procure and prepare it.

Notice of our intentions on The Network would be helpful.  The key is I do need people to email me at majortinker@aol.com rather than just post on threads, pm etc.

Offers of artwork, cartoons and layout work are very much welcomed.  As for book reviews we want to make sure they are for new books pre release - we have one or two en route.

I actually picked up the idea of sheet music from The Kat Basket, a blog which posts old sheet music along with a telling of how the blog author acquired the music.  It might be worth dropping the keeper, kittybriton, an email--I'm sure she'll be more than happy to help.

I shall make a post on the Network after lunch, and I'll make sure to emphasis that you want emails!  It's so much easier when you don't have to run around gathering up all the threads yourself, I'm sure.
