Hello everyone!  I'm another newbie, though I've been aware of steampunk for many years but never participated/joined in the community.  I've finally taken the plunge though, & have a few outfits in the works.  Unfortunately the SPE Texas groups I've found don't appear very active, but this thread looks pretty recent, so here I am.  I'm north of Austin, in the Killeen area.

Welcome!  I'm actually in Cameron, and so far I haven't been able to locate any more of us in this area so I've been doing my best to meet up with the Austin crew when possible.

Which is awesome. (Though I still think with a little effort, a Waco group could spring up, heh heh heh)

And welcome, Almee! Come join us some time!

Good Grief I'm glad I live in Austin!

I'd be up the proverbial creek if I thought I had to do one or more hours travel time (one way at that) just to make the biweekly meet ups.
You good people, have my greatest respect!

So much going on this up coming week too! Saturday Is Anna's B-day party with the Austin steamtrain murder mystery.(I hope I can make that, I put in for the day off) Beer Brass and BS at Opal Divines on Tuesday and then the regular biweekly meet up at Epoch coffee house.
Yeah, It's pretty safe to say we are a fairly active group.  Wink

And it's quite safe to say we are all pretty well excited about Austin's first "Steampunk Convention" coming up in January! (I will be there if I have to call in DEAD!)
Speaking of which I had better get back into the garage, these props aren't going to finish themselves!

On a side note, Killeen is a pretty good sized town and with Ft. Hood right there you have a very diverse number of people. I wouldn't be surprised if you could find at least a couple of like minded individuals in your area.
Until that time however you would be more than welcome to come down to any of our meetups as we are a fairly friendly group of miscreants people. Smiley

It's me, sorry for the name quick-change, but after I registered I wanted to change to my name, but name changing isn't an option on here.  Sooo, I deleted Almee & re-registered.

I'm looking forward to Clockwork Con - it'll be my first steampunk con annnd Steam Powered Giraffe will be there (woohoo!!).  I'm also working on outfits and trying to brainstorm some accessories/props.

Killeen is a growing town, and it's diverse because the military is here, but as far as I've seen there really isn't a steampunk presence here.  Not that I'm aware of, anyway.  That being said, Geekfest starts tomorrow (hosted by and benefiting Central Texas College) and I saw Airship Isabella will be here, but they aren't on the program so I guess maybe they'll just have a merch table set up(?).

Sounds like a good place to start looking for fellow Steamies! If you have anything to wear already, I would suggest wearing it when you go. You may be surprised at the response.
Bring note pad and pen in case you need to jot down names and numbers!

Being in my backyard I don't want to miss it, but unfortunately I may have to.  I'm currently temporarily afflicted with a knee injury that hinders my mobility.  If I'm up to it I definitely want to go, there are some presentations that sound interesting and I'd like to make it by Airship Isabella's table & hopefully meet some folks in the area.

Sounds like an oportunity for a nice cane, if I may say so.

But, I've gone to such things with various injuries and broken bits.... More often than not, it's a good conversation starter Cheesy

You might also look at the facebook page for S.C.A.R.S. https://www.facebook.com/groups/130063527061276/  It is full of people from all over Texas, and they are starting an elaborate RP involving a confrontation between SCARS and The Order. I expect the storyline will be in evidence at Clockwork Con.

I wish it were just a break, then it could be set & I'd be on my merry way.  I am using a cane, but also have orders to stay off my leg as much as possible (with ice & elevation) until I'm scheduled for surgery.  But yes, a cane is a conversation starter for sure.  I have two, one I painted with flames & glued rhinestones to, and a more respectable looking derby style silver one with irridescent marbled handle.  I'm quite ready to be rid of them both Smiley Although I have been able to get some sewing & beading done on my outfits in the meantime.  o/~always look on the bright side of life~/o *whistles*

Yes! I found SCARS online & saw they started the RP at San Japan.  I hadn't joined the fb group because I wasn't sure if it was just San Antonio folks.

So, I came across something today that might be right up our alley.

http://www.austinballroomdancers.org

They have nearly weekly dances (on Saturdays), and how wonderful would it be to get all dressed up and attend one? Granted, I'll probably attend more than one, as I *adore* ballroom, but I would love for others interested to go as well!

Oo, that sounds like fun.  I've never danced ballroom but I certainly wouldn't mind learning.

The classes are incredibly well priced, from my experience. I've got a couple of friends already willing to take a session with me to give them a go. I'll most certainly keep everyone posted!

I may or may not be around tonight. The truck has finally decided to say "enough already."

Edit: Seems I will be around after all. Sans truck, but still in attendance Smiley

Another lively crowd last night...it was especially fun to meet Jack from Volgagrad, who insisted on wearing a khaki wool Soviet Greatcoat in 103º heat! Bravo, Comrade! There was a lot of show-and-tell.

Excellent shots Mr. Squire.  Thanks for sharing as I do enjoy the gadgets.  I really do need to take off one day and come out to see you down there in Austin.
I haven't made any official posts yet, but we're also having a bit of a get together up here in DFW in November on the 5th.  So if you've the inclination, drop by and say hello.

Captain Hopkins! Long time, no see! Ætherfest I believe it was. As for November 5th, I have been watching the progress of The Nightmare Machine 2011. I would love to attend; it sounds like great fun, but I won't know for awhile.

I am also trying to decide about whether to attend The Difference Engine in Ft. Worth or IKKICON here in Austin. They are unfortunately at the same time. Look forward to seeing you at some point.

Yes, you should come see us!

And what sort of get together are you speaking of? I spend more than a good bit of time in the DFW area Smiley

Yes, it was Aetherfest my friend. That has been entirely too long.  Unfortunately it is my luck that work is not picking back up to 60+ a week.  I'll try to find time soon if possibly though.

Miss Abiliegh,
The good Squire posted the link to our site, and I believe it's fairly easy to navigate. A more detailed post will happen as soon as I"ve the time.  Just to be a small get together with several hundred of our community. The Clockwork Wonderland was so well received, we thought we'd give it a go again.

Is everyone from the Austin area out of the path of those fires that are burning?  I think most of you that I've met live more to the north of the fire area but I thought I'd ask.

I see and smell residual smoke but no danger here in south Austin. Anyone within Austin city limits are pretty safe I believe.

How are things up north Abbi?

Anybody in the Austin area know where I might be able to get some old 12-15kv 30-60ma neon sign transformers without the GFI?  I'm working on refurbishing the Tesla Coil for the haunted house I help with.  I've got e-mails into several neon sign companies in Austin, but thought I'd see if anybody here might have a source I haven't thought of yet.

Doctor,

You might try Todd Sanders at http://www.roadhouserelics.com/index.html He deals in all sorts of old parts for neon.

I'm not young to be able to make it to the meet-up at Epoch this evening. Having a bad flare up of the arthritis related to my genetic condition & I'm pretty much imobilized until it goes away. Had to call in sick to work & everything.
