Looks like we won't be able to make it to the Dulcimer festival after all. We're still getting over the fact that we had to put our little dog down last Sunday and there's lot's of work to be done here at home.

Deepest Sympathy for your loss. I had to put down my old cat last year on my Bday...life goes on but I still mourn him.

Greetings from Houston. Though I've been going to Brass Googles for some time now never wandered into the forums until yesterday. I look forward to getting to know everyone as my wife and I moved to Texas from the DC area two years ago and I'm still trying to get to know people, well, people with like minded interests. I had many back on the East Coast and I don't know, just miss my crew there. Hopefully I will find a crew or something of the like here, but I really have nothing else to add other than that. I'm really sort of rambling since I don't know quite what to say so stay shiney.

It has been brought to my attention that
1. mountain dulcimers and such are not really steampunk and are badly out of place in a steampunk setting,
2. anyone involved in Old Time Music is not really a steampunk.
3. since Oldtime music, especially that with a banjo in it, doesn't sound like gothic rock, or classical music, or even ragtime (despite the fact that ragtime is, in essence, banjo-derived), it is not in keeping with "proper" steampunk norms.

I was not aware that the genre(s) had become so stringently defined. I apologize for offending anyone, if such has indeed occurred, and will refrain from posting entries about such events in the future.

Oh, my, is somebody being snarky about freaking musical instruments? As I've seen eloquently stated elsewhere, Steampunk is NOT just mid-Victorian British - The marvelous things being done in Asian Steampunk are an excellent example.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as you have a suitably steamy back story on how you got it, it's good.

Oh, and don't forget the brass.

And maybe a little copper over there, yeah, right there.

And a few LEDs, just for sparklies.

Perhaps this person (or persons as it may be) would like to enlighten us on a public posting as it would seem my education is lacking. I am amongst those who see any perriod instrument used in music played in a victorian setting would qualify as steampunk. And with out the "Old Time" music, where does the "steam" come into thier idea of steampunk music?  Huh

Hey look what I found with out even trying hard.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

An electric dulcimer! Too bad it ain't steampunk.  Tongue

P.S. Keep posting events as YOU see fit. I would have gone had time and finaces allowed.

When I look upon the iTunes and my Steampunk folder I notice that I do not have one set style of music. The genre ranges from Accoustic, Pop, World, Experimental, Goth, World and...Hip Hop? Oh, I put Nerdcore Rising in it but i digress.

In EVERY group there will always be the "purists" who believe only certain things fit into the category, screw em.

Hmmm, anybody that tells you mountain dulcimers aren't steampunk are full of $%&^@ and that steampunks can't enjoy oldtime music are full of it also.

Post all you want about it and tell anyone who doesn't like it where they can go. That's the 'punk' in steampunk talking!  Grin

Funny that I never heard of that one. I was also raised in the DFW Metroplex (see that proves it  Wink ). One of the ongoing jokes I love in the movie Tremors is how Earl always follows his cussing with "pardon my French" since that's what I say so often. Earl and Valentine in that movie are just like most of my family.  Cheesy

Speaking as a part-time mad scientist and hobby surgeon, I think that narrow attitude toward period music and instruments could be cured medically by the old-fashioned application of a course of enemas.

I'd suggest flaming turpentine for the first, and then progressing from there.

Hey, y'all!  Grin

Pennie and I are discussing the possibility of a DFW area steampunk Meetup group. Any thoughts?

--Leslie

I'd love to meet up!  I need a conveyance first though.  Sadly I don't have much in the way of steamy clothes or trinkets

As for Akon?  No money, can't go, so no Abney Park for me.

As Meetup charges a fee (usually paid by the group leader), I will ask my friend Jenn if it has advantages over other forum types.

Indeed.  However, where ever shall we meet?  Texas is such an "giant" state.

Anyone ever heard of a thing called:  Four Winds Ren Faire?

It's near Tyler Texas...between White House and Troupe

Why...we could meet there....if we all set our Way-Back machines for the right weekend.

But, I am bias...seeings how I work out there...

I'd love to meet some of y'all seeing as how there doesn't seem to be much in the way of steampunkiness up here in the Texoma area. I WILL be going to Akon and would love to plan to meet there.  In addition, I just heard about a new on yesterday. Saturday May 15 is the date for Green Steam Circus in Austin.  http://greensteamcircus.com  It sounds like an absolute blast and Abney Park will be there!
