My brother used to claim that there was a small window of time during the afternoon that would allow you to get out of Austin without hitting either the lunch or end of day traffic, but I don't think it exists. He was just yanking my watchchain.
I live in North Austin (where RR, Cedar Park, and Austin all converge), and I commuted 3-5 days per week to San Marcos while getting my Masters. There IS a window, but you have to time it perfectly. As long as I hit downtown Austin (heading north, of course) by 2:30 in the afternoon, then I was OK. If I left San Marcos after 2pm, I may as well have waited until 6pm since the traffic was horrible. That being said, I have no clue about the traffic patterns heading south out of Austin around that time. So, it's still very possible he's yanking your fob.

Ah, the joys of driving I-35! I live about 35 miles southwest of Austin and commuted for 6 years into South Austin, sometimes via I-35. The traffic pattern is always heavy to very heavy to insane. Sunday Morning early is OK. These days I take the back country roads when going to Lady Bird City.

@Everett: Apparently I-35 stretches from Laredo down on the border all the way up to Minnesota. At least according to Wikipedia.
2:30 seems like a pretty good time to head out. Fortunately I've gotten into the habit of overestimating how long it will take me to drive somewhere, particularly when I have to get on the highway. Oh Austin traffic, what have you done to my habit of laziness?

Never drove there, wouldn't know. I heard they call them "parking lots" instead of "freeways"

Some people do, yes. I've heard it. Some of the worst traffic in the States.

Sorry, if the site had been up I would have posted this a LOT sooner this week: If anybody is at loose ends today, in the lil' town of Washington, or rather, in Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park, they are having their yearly Texas Birthday Celebration (yep, even with the cold weather and all), and my bunch of insane people who like to dress up in period/runaway scrape/Texas Army garb and play rain or shine, indoors or out, hot weather or cold er, *ahem* friends and neighbors who play oldtime music, namely the North Harris County Dulcimer Society, will be just one of the many weather-proof maniacs groups performing for the pleasure and edification and elucidation of all attendees. If we are lucky, we will be performing indoors; if not, out on the conference center's lawn. I'm planning to wear my top hat and my nickel-plated Willsons' brazing goggles -- and period clothing as well, of course, including the alpaca poncho (lol & shivver- thank heavens for heat packs! ), and will be playing the banjo, minstrel banjo, folk fife and neoceltic flute (but not simultaneously ). Its not really a steampunk event, but steampunks'd fit in , probably, provided the outfits aren't too extreme.

Sorry about that, Mr. Wells! I intended to post it several times this month (I did, at least once before), but was reminded by a friend that it might be considered SPAM, and then the site was down this past latter-week, so I didnt get it on the forum 'til actually the first day of the festivities (yesterday, lol)
I 'll try to post stuff in a more timely manner, relatively soon, since we have several play dates in the next few months.
Again, pardon my tardiness in posting.

Oh! I thought is was my Parabolic Atomizer working in collusion with my Computational Weather Control System using my Hyperbolic Creation Machine to mess with us... or maybe it's El Nino?
(all of the above contraptions are strictly experimentation...and for use in world domination!)

I want to give that a hopeful *might*. My roommate's family goes to a ren faire at least once a year, and invites me along. If they offer, I'll accept, of course. But my funds are at such a point where, barring a miracle, I'd not be attending in costume. *sad*

I'm located all the way in Orange, so I can't imagine getting up that way more than maybe once a year if I'm lucky. Unless I had a ride. So... as fun as that sounds, I doubt I can make it.

I would point out that the esteemed Abney Park will be playing on Saturday night at A-kon this year in Dallas. As a bonus, that same weekend is also a Canton First Monday weekend, and is only one hour east of downtown Dallas. (I plan on taking Friday off from work for the Canton run, and spend the rest of the weekend in Dallas at Akon.) Seems like a good excuse to gather the gentlefolk together in the DFW area for a fine weekend of frivolities. My wife and I already have our tickets to A-kon. We've got steampunk dress for Sat and dieselpunk for Sunday. We're considering getting a room at the hotel that weekend.
