Hello all! I've noticed quite a few here are in various far-flung areas of Texas, but in reading through this thread, I haven't really seen anyone in the East Texas/Piney Woods area. My husband and I have recently gotten into the Steampunk "scene" (though, in reality, we have been quite familiar with it for quite some time) and while we have told quite a few a little bit about how we understand it works, we haven't encountered anyone with any more knowledge of it than us. Unfortunately, with our finances as they are, and our conflicting work schedules, far-distance travel is not really feasible for us, not even as far as Dallas, even though it is only a 2 hr drive. If there is anyone else here in the Commerce/Paris/Cooper area, we would love to try to meet up sometime!

Coffee Powered Sprite,

We're actually having an event out in Jefferson on April 1st weekend, which might be close enough for you to try and attend.  If perchance you are unable to make it, part of our time will be spent gathering enough names to get local groups and individuals wanting to meet in touch with each other as we are all about building the community.  So give us a week or so after to recover and we'll hopefully have a large list of available names for you.

First I'd heard of the idea.  Should be good.  Any more details on when it's supposed to open, or how long it is supposed to run?  SANVA(san-antonio) will be interested in going i'm sure.

Alas, Jefferson is actually further from here than Dallas, and I work nights on weekends, so my husband and I would not be able to attend. It is, unfortunately, the reason why we cannot do many things because my husband is still attending school at the local community college here and I work 12-hr overnight shifts on the weekend. Maybe one of these days I can find a place that will give me a more normal schedule so I can do things on the weekends.

I completely understand the distance/time issue.  Luckily there are places like Brassgoggles here to at least keep you in touch with the rest of us lunatics Wink  Hopefully your schedule will eventually get to the point that you can attend some events.  That and we can find you a few locals to invade the coffee shops with.

Gathering at a local coffee shop would be wonderful! And we are already introducing our friends to this wonderful world of Steampunk.  Grin For meeting places here, there are at least 4 different coffee shops, 3 24/hr diners, the community college, and likely quite a few hole-in-the-wall gems to be found out here. All of this in a town where you can drive completely around it in a little over half and hour. And I know that there are no less than 11 different antique store scattered all over town.

When I first moved here I hated it (I grew up in the suburbs of Dallas), but there is so much history here with all the antique stores and old Victorian homes that it has really kind of grown on me, which my hubby teases me about all the time. Smiley

Esteemed colleagues!  If this hasn't been posted yet we should be making a lot more noise about it; the horns are rather quiet on the subject of Steampunk and Soth by Southwest.  Why?  Are we being caught "flat-footed"?

South by Southwest Music Festival (SXSW) in Austin TX March 9-18, 2012

At least one thing I've found out so far.  And I'm sure there's more if you look.  Sadly the Texassteampunks.ning.com site is silent about any March events.  Moderator?

I finally have a weekend available, and find the event mentioned with the most interest is actually going to be on a Monday evening with a five hour drive to get there.   I shall have to pay more attention to this next year and try to plan accordingly.  There appear to be quite a few interesting events actually.  Thanks for bringing this up.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

*ahem*

While I figure out a way to feneagle myself into one of those "interactive" SXSW events (which may or may not happen depending on my charm and wit (I'm doooomed!) *ahem* I can give you a very partial list of free events at SXSW (see spoiler below), some of which will be of interest to us. The non-music events like talks and such tend to take place this first weekend, or immediately thereafter, and the music concentrated toward the second half of the week. I have skipped over most of the music events on account there are too many to list (yes free events at bars/nightclubs and some and in open places -including Stubbs!).

For a more complete search (will give you all the music venues), you can find most of them (although I realize not all be listed) by clicking this link, which already has the search term "free" embedded into the search query:

http://austin2012.sched.org/?s=free&iframe=no

and this extra list: http://sxsw.com/free

If any one has an idea on how to stow away into one of the two Steampunk talks, I'm open to suggestions.  I will try to contact people directly.  I'm surprised that SP has not been featured more prominently this year.

Cheers,

J. Wilhelm

I could've planned a little better I'm sure.  Although I was supposed to be in Louisiana this week it appears that I might be staying in Beaumont and making my way to Louisiana on a few daily excursions from now through Thursday, when I'll be driving back to my beloved Alpine.  Next year for sure I'll be able to attend some of these fascinating events.  For that matter, if anyone is aware of places I ought to visit while in the Beaumont area, I'd be welcome to suggestions.  Thanks all.  Hopefully my next trip east I'll be able to sample the steampunks of East Texas and some of their happenings.

Hello folks, returning member who hardly ever posted before (so much so that I've forgotten my log in info although I do believe i went by Zili here before as its my usual name.)

I've been kept from the steampunk lifestyle until recently by a no good boyfriend who wanted to do steampunk events with me but never got off his butt to do so nor would he stop spending his money so I could save mine.  Long story short dumped the loser, moved home, and will be graduating college finally in May so going back to full time work in the fall will help me be able to actually make some gatherings this time.

I'm located in South East Texas, a few hours from Galveston and will be making it to Dickens on the Strand this year for the second time (the first was in 2007.)  I hope to be meeting up with a few of my steampunk friends I haven't seen in a year like Lisa from Turner's Tokens.  And will be introducing my best friend Shaylee and her 5 year old son to steampunk at that time ^_^

And the good crew of the Airship Isabella and the Airship Neo Dulcimer will be in attendance.
