LOL. Actually I play Backup banjo, Folk Fife, and Neo-Celtic Flute for the dulcimer players (also Minstrel Banjo, but that's usually just at the period costumed plays, and whenever other fretless banjo enthusiasts are jamming). I used to play the mountain dulcimer, still do once in a while, but mostly they tell me to put the dulcimer and the banjo away (lol) and "play the fife and the flute, please." I'm still trying to figure out whether I play the others so badly, or if I play the fife and the flute so well...

I used to play the dulcimer, but that was a few years ago and not sure if I could remember how to do it well. It's a fun instrument to play and the basics are easy to pick up, it's just not that portable of an instrument. Still I like it.

This makes me want to dust off mine and try again.
Oh, I'm pretty much got the steampunk gear put together, with new goggles, which I'm wearing on Saturday at A-Kon. On Sunday I'm going dieselpunk with what I think will be a cool military style outfit.

I haven't decided if I need to get new goggles or not. Depending on the hat I will be wearing will depend on if goggles will be suitable. The ones I have now are pretty pathetic in the way of steampunk.

Dulcimer folks: If anybody gets to feeling serious about dusting off the mountain dulcimer, and wants instruction, workshops, etc, there's the Palestine Oldtime Music and Dulcimer Festival (commonly called "Old Pal") in Palestine, Texas, March 25 through 27, website here: http://www.jerrywrightfamily.com/oldpal.htm
I hope to see as many of you there as possible! If you're local to/live somewhere around Houston, this is the website operated by the NorthHarris County Dulcimer Society, http://www.houstondulcimer.com, which is the society I play with. Dulcimer clubs, etc. in your area can be found at LOL, now I wish I'd gone ahead and brought the minstrel banjo in out of the trunk at Aggiecon today... Oh, well, maybe next year's/Apollocon/some other convention... I was the guy in the mid-height topper, with Willsson's goggles strapped on the hatband, and a rather huge Kukri knife shoved in the back of his belt...walking around with a half-finished carved hickory bentwood cane, black vest w/conductor-style, "el cheapo" Westclox windup vintage pocketwatch, with a teensy lil hansa cog sailboat (sort of a visual as well as a written pun, there) at the end of a beaded drop attached to the toggle-end of the watchchain...black, white, grey and green plaid shirt under the vest...black slacks (actually dress jeans), and black, regular mundane oxfords crossed with running style, shoes. My eyes actually behaved until five minutes before I hit the home driveway, so I didn't actually wear my eyepatch* at the con.
There was a young lady in a black-and-red horizontal-striped longsleeved t-shirt-like top, who took my picture. If you can find her, she might be able to show you visually what I looked like; I was too S.T.U.P.I.D. to take a pic of myself all dressed up *excoriates himself* I'll have pics of some of the other costumed people *grumbles at self* up in the AM or sometime tomorrow, once I crop and mess around with the definition and clarity. I never did find that person dressed as Alucard... Me being myself, unfortunately, I can't remember any names (I'm reeally sorry, any of you folks on here that I might have snapped a pic of, I'm just really horrible at names). EDIT:I think (or thought) I saw Miss Holmes, but the person I thought was her looked very frightfully busy, so I chose what seemed the better part of valor at the time and let her alone. EDIT: spoilered Palestine Dulcimer festival blurb, and account of what I looked like all dressed up, and yes, I do look very similar when I perform with the dulcimer society. Maybe next time I'll get some guts and bring the minstrel banjo in... -------------------------- * I don't actually like wearing an eyepatch very much, since it's doctor's orders, coupled with the fact that I can only see half as well as a nearsighted bat with it on -it's supposedly therapeutic for a brain-level alignment and eye-muscle-coordination problem, the name of which I have long since forgotten, and it does help after I've switched back to two eyes, or have an eyestrain-related headache, but I tend to stumble and run into walls, off into swimming pools, out in front of traffic, etc., while I'm wearing it... of course I do that anyway, but...

But maybe I could make the last day since it's a Saturday. Don't let me get you fired, lol, but make it if you can (I usually just go for Saturday anyway. the previous two or three days tend to be pretty great as well, but Saturday is when everybody tends to show up, mainly for the same reason as yours/mine. The teachers and the headliners are the same people, so you not only get instructed, you also get to hear your instructors play! I mostly just jam all day, unless Rafe, or one of the other banjo people gives an intermediate-to-advanced banjo lesson, but lots of folks go to the classes. It's all a lot more relaxed, so I hear, than the eastern festivals, which are supposedly class-and-workshop-driven.
Here are the photos I have that came out relatively decent, put together as two montage-like assemblages *crosses fingers, hoping it works*: ------------------------- What a shame! Dapper Werewolves, Wolfman, & A Howlin' Good TimeYou are most cordially invited by the esteemed and reputable (in 49 states) San Antonio Neo-Victorian Association for a night of ferocious werewolves, mystical Victorian Horror, and fantastic clothing! We will be viewing the new Victorian Horror film remake, Wolfman, at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes for its midnight release. We will also be eating in the Drafthouse during the film and photoshoots are of course scheduled. Your Esteemed President will be saving us seats and a spot in line by around 8 PM, combating the unwashed masses who will be watching the film with us as well. Feel free to join me at that time (I can provide a lift for anyone that needs it) or join me sometime before the film starts (10 PM would be best). Please RSVP or contact me to let me know how many spots to reserve. The dress code (encouraged, though not required) will be Dark Victorian Gothic. Dress as if you were a part of the film yourself or one of the horrors in it! To purchase your tickets before the showing (which is most HIGHLY recommended): http://www.drafthouse.com/westlakes/shows.php?id=700

That was at Aggiecon, at the Aggieland Hilton/College Station Hilton (take your pick, I can't remember which one is the right name), in College Station. I managed to move everything over to the following week, so I could be at at least one -con this year. Were you there?

No, but I've been to that hotel before. How is Aggiecon? What sort of convention is it?
SF/Anime/Gaming Con, so far as I could tell; a lot of relatively-steampunk-like people showed up, but were by no means the majority; there was a Young Walter/Girlycard pair, but I only managed to find Walter, several Naruto people, LOTS of Twilighters (Twillybees? not meaning to dis anybody), or at least they seemed to be thus. There was a general Zombification thread running through it all, and a major infestation set in toward the end of the day on Saturday. Unfortunately, I didnt stay to see them eradicated, as I had to drive back to Houston to be available around the house on Sunday; I do hope Aggieland was not overrun... Lots of dealers in the dealer area. I picked up a relatively huge - 18" overall - Khukuri knife to use with one of my RP/short story characters (would've come in handy against the Zombies, and maybe Mila Jovovich- but no, that's in the movies, isn't it? There were also a hat-goggles-and fake armor booth with gaming pretensions (several gaming booths, in fact), and three or four jewelry makers/vendors, much more than I can fit in here. I nearly succumbed to the temptation to buy one of those "E.L.O.P.E." -brand all-cloth pith helmets, but managed to restrain myself. Also (of course), lots of performances, workshops, lectures, tabletop games, etc, and an improv that I forgot about and didn't take part in *grrr, kicks self* And lots and lots of Photo Ops... I wish I had gotten everyone's name, but alas...

It's made even harder that I came from a suburb of Los Angeles, so I was used to people to talk to and things to do. And so... yeah. Here I am, for reasons too complicated to go into.

Life is a very complicated thing indeed, but most prefer it to the alternative. Glad to have you around. And yes, the best way yo get friends is to go out in public being yourself. You'd be amazed at who might gravitate your way. You've lucked into Steampunk with all it's subtle wonders, one of which is an amazing group of well mannered lads and lasses (on the whole). Hope to be seeing more of you soon. Best of luck,
