This thread is for all your fancies on steam-powered, land based transportational vehicles: be it cars, monowheels, motorcycles mechanical horses, etc., how to build them, benefits of driving such a vehicle, what you would do if you could procure one, and other like-minded subjects.

One of the many things I'd absolutly love to do is to pull up next to some decked-out hotrod, with flame decals, nitrous injection, and base lights in my steamcar at a red light. When the *ahem* "gangsta" casts a befuddled look at my vehicle, with it's fine woodwork and brass detailing, and makes some snide remark about my tastes, I would open the cylinder cocks in the engines, spraying him and his colleages with condensed water vapour, and in the mist, motor off into the distance.

Crude, yes, but VERY entertaining! Grin

well from what i've heard(take with salt.) most steam cars are fairly fast.

i would think out running them would be more proper. Wink

Hah, I was just daydreaming about a truck/locomotive sort of combo.. Ya know, twin rear-axles driven by big ol' steam cylinders in the same fashion as steam locomotives.. a double set of steering axles up front.. madness. Love it! Cheesy

I mentioned in another topic;the goggle thread I believe, that I was planning to build a steam car.
Currently,I`m debating over steam or clockwork with preference for the latter.

I would recommend beginning an exercise regimen beforehand - winding up the spring with that big key will be MOST strenuous Smiley

Question, would the spring run/drive the motor or do something to Generate power.

Be sure to have a LOUD and shrill Steam whistle to combat those boom booms!  Smiley

Clockwork is  is not a goer for full size vehicles, because you have to have a power supply to wind up the spring. This is fine in a toy, but in a car you would need a motor to wind up the spring so why not use the motor directly?

I swear I just had the idea for a steam powered car the other day.  I just can't figure out how to heat the water to boil.

Mind you, I'm being realistic.  So coal is out.

I like propane, but the amounts required would be a bit much.  Then there's electricity, but that would drain the battery....

I believe that Steampunk is more than just brass and watchparts. It's finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic pleasing way. It's living a life that looks old-fashioned, yet speaks to the future.

Diesel or gasoline would be your best bets, using a scaled-up version of those camping cookers..

But surely, aesthetics aside, the idea of having a steam car would be to get away from the dependence on oil.

And merely trade to dependence on another matter, surely?

Steam power is no magical cure-all. It needs fuel, and massive quantities of it. Especially considering steam engines are even less efficient than IC engines.

If you want fuel independence, look at muscle power instead.. Wink

it would defenitally lessen it.

But if we're looking to get completely away from fuel, then electricity would be the best.  Use an alternator to keep the battery charged and use some electric heating coils to boil the water.

*Ahem*... 1st law of thermodynamics puts a dampener on that, I'm afraid.

Clockwork or electric is best, and still fits well within the Clock-Steam area. As a plus, it would be easier to get a license for. If you need one at all.

Clockwork (albeit pretty) would be completely useless in an automotive application. It takes a humongoug amount of power to store any useful amount of power in a spring..

Basically, what the laws all together mean in that energy will always be lost, no matter what you try to do.

Your plan to boil water with electric coils charged by an alternator run by that same boiled water is circular, and therefore at best would be a perpetual motion device. You would never be able to extract any useful energy from the system, or it immediately collapses.

It seems to be a common misconception that 'steam' is an energy source in itself, this is not the case, like any other engine a steam engine requires a source of heat to do useful work. The advantage of steam power is that because the heat source is physically separate from the working parts you don't have the same dependence on high quality, fast burning fuels that IC engines do.

Regarding power sources, someone came up with the idea of a steam/electric hybrid, although it is very much still at the idea stage: [url]http://www.halfbakery.com/idea/Steam-Electric_20Hybrid#1192390149/url]

You'd still need fuel for the boiler, but the advantage of the above idea, if it works out as envisioned, is that you can start the vehicle 'cold', running it on electricity while the water is boiling.
