I personally consider Rik 'n' Ade to be one of the all time great comedy double acts. Yes their humour is purile and full of fart and nob gags but I love 'em!! The slap-stick violence is just a master stroke! I have the complete Bottom on DVD..the 'Bottom Fluff' outtakes collection and all the stage shows (three of which I saw live). In fact when I was on 'Noel Edmunds' Telly Addicts' back in '93, Bottom was my specialist subject! One of my favourite lines is from the episode where Richie and Eddie are masquerading as Mrs and Mrs Taffy O'Jones and Eddie is dressed as the woman. When they arrive at the hotel resteraunt and are asked 'Do you have reservations'? to which Eddie replys! Yes!! I'm not at all sure we're going to get away with this!"  |

Lucky you seeing the boys live, but I'm sorry you had to put up with Noel. Bottom just isn't as popular as I hoped it would be. If only I had a huge wad Or a lot of cash... Due to Rik's almost fatal quad bike accident back in '98 and the fact he now has to take medication for the rest of his life to prevent epilectic seizures he can no longer perform. Ade said in an interview earlier this year that Rik can no longer remember lines so live shows are out and recording anything takes for ever and Rik gets really angry and frustrated at not being able to remember lines. He has virtually retired from performing now.
My girlfriend and I have a Christmas ritual. Every Christmas eve she insists we watch 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' and every Christmas day I insist we watch the Bottom episode 'Holy' ('Gold'....'Frankenstein'...and 'Grrrrr!').I mean how can you not love a show with the line "I'm not gonna let the arrival of the Son of God spoil my Christmas!"

I never knew this. Rik Mayle was a fantastic actor, even outside comedy roles. He was very disturbing in Murder rooms. Back on topic, did you ever see Filthy, Rich and Catflap? |

Back on topic, did you ever see Filthy, Rich and Catflap? Saw it...loved it...have the whole of the one series they made on DVD. It used to intrigued me that the credits for FR&C always said 'Written by Ben Elton' and 'Additional material by Rik Mayal' so when I was lucky enough to be invited backstage to meet Mr Elton in his dressing room after a gig I asked him how much of any show is 'added' by Rik. Ben said that Rik simply cannot stick to a script and improvises and ad libs a lot..and Ade would often 'go with him' when he went off on a tangent. This used to make recording FR&C very difficult as they couldn't fit the actual script into the 30 mins alloted because of Rik's additions and so often Rik's improvising would remain in the finished show and some of Ben's script would have to be ditched to accomadate it..and this used to annoy Elton. That is why FR&C was the last thing Ben Elton ever wrote for Rik and Ade...except for his collaboration with Richard Curtis on the Blackadder series in which Rik and Ade made guest appearances as The Lord Flashheart and Von Richoften respectively. Sorry, had to get that out of my system. Well someone mentioned Blackadder which 99% of the time makes me start quoting Flasheart.
Ah Bottom, Bottom, Bottom. Marvellous TV series, and the live shows (ones I've seen that were recorded) were excellent too, especially when they (well Rik) go off on one for about 10 minutes. Too many marvellous bits to remember.
FR&C was a great series, shame that they did only do one series, but as Capt. Dirigible says, Elton must have just gotten too annoyed with Riks manner. Best part of that series for me was when they had to have a 'quiet night in' so that Richie could be at the TV studio sobre, well slept and neatly presented. So they play Trivial Pursuits and that bit was just hilarious. Especially coupled with "LAGER FRENZY!".
Rik's other big project is worth a watch if you haven't seen it before. The New Statesmen is a work of political, satirical genius. Take away the comedy and you still have a fascinating political drama. Wish I'd gone to see the live shows they did that continued the story. If you've not seen it, do watch it.

Ade Edmondson in the Bad Shepherds is worth going to see if you get the chance. They play covers of punk and 80's songs... As folk music. The folk version of Kraftwerk's The Model was superb. They'd have been great for the Asylum...

I trust people have seen the Bottom film Hotel Paradiso? It had a bit of a different style to the tv series, as you actually had an idea of what was going on some of the time, but it was hilarious!

When my fiancee came over to England for Xmas two years ago we watched the live Bottom show from Southampton on TV. Before then I'd not taken much notice of it although I knew my brother was a big fan. The show was a hoot! I can see how Rik's talent for improvisiation came to the fore. He did take a hit during the show when he or Ade mis-timed a punch. The blood on the towel was real! A great shame that accident robbed us of Rik Mayall's talent.
Incidentally, Ben Elton's book set during WW1 - The First Casualty - is a great read. A friend loaned me his audio version and it was gripping all the way through. There's a character very much like a nastier version of Lord Flashheart in it. Recommended.

LOVE THEM BOTH and I love Bottom.I was so happy to see it on a freeview channel.I even have one of their live shows on tape.Shame that episodes are on so late.Even tho Im redundant and have no reason to actually get up in the morning I still feel guilty if I saty up and watch them into the wee small hours.
Yep, i know im a girly and i know Im supposed to find their kind of sense of humour immature and silly but lets face it, who doesnt love a good fart/kn*b gag.
They both have aged well and I quite happily ogle them when they are on screen.
Just have to say this...."I get inside her 5 times a day and take her to heaven and back". Woof
Im even old enough to remember Filthy Rich and Catflap.

Bottom is simply awesome. I saw it a few years ago and just fell in love with their comedy stylings.
