Quite so. Completion of a degree always leads to a feeling akin to what the French call le petit mort.

What are you feeling so sad about, Ms. Poison? You should be celebrating, for Hell's sake. Some of us still have to study and be boring and poor...
I envy you academicals. If only I could get money for doing research or teaching the arts or doing presentations and writing essays...

My nightmare continues unabated. Three uni's have turned me down for postgrad studies, now my mother's got on her high horse and is yelling at me to give it up. Despite the fact I've still got three applications still 'live' and a fourth to go in shortly. Not only that, she's now screaming that it's my father's fault as he took me to initially see the Uni I eventually chose as my undergrad school, and which then proceeded to let me down spectacularly over the next three years. And that it's my fault for going to that uni in the first place and that I should have gone where *she* wanted me to. Despite the fact she knows slightly-less-than-bugger-all about the procedures surrounding postgrad applications she thinks she has the right to rant and rave and rage on my behalf, as I'm of the school of thought that such achieves slightly less than nothing. Nice to know I have a supportive mother

I'm half-seriously looking at doing another three A-levels and a degree in physics of one variety or another.

At least you lot are in Uni. I'm not. That's where I want to go. The University of Edinburgh to study Earth Sciences. But I can't very well do that until I get my Highers, which I have applied to the local College in hopes of getting into the Highers and Intermediates Programme, for which I still havn't heard back from, and if I don't get a place in this course then I can forget about going to Uni. Isn't life just so damn well bloody dandy right now, hmmm?

Might as well. I did four years at (sixth form) college in the end, walked away with six A-levels and an AS. Two years wasn't enough for me to decide what I want to do or get the necessary qualifications.

I've already got five A-Levels and a degree though, some people call wanting another one excessive - mainly, the people who organise funding for these things.

See, I need two degrees to do what I want to do- I need an undergraduate degree (which I have) and then a postgrad on top of that. No problems with the funding, as the loans companies and education authorities have a list of subjects which need two degrees to fully qualify and Architecture is on it.
My problem lies in the fact that there are two or three years of undergraduate architecture students trying to get back to uni, and a limited number of places. This hasn't been helped of course by the recession, which has left many of us graduates out of work and trying to get back in without work experience, or else with several years' experience and trying to go back having been made redundant. I have my minimum experience and can't get back in. It is very very frustrating.

I do, but it is debatable as to how long it will last. I've really had to sacrifice a lot to get just this year's experience and I doubt I can afford a second year of it on the same terms. Although my employers would no doubt do all they can to help me out, realistically I'm looking at finding another job if I can't get back to university this year, if not as an architectural assistant then as a CAD draughtsman or somesuch.

I feel your pain James Harrison,
Stuck in the same boat - Got My Part I but can't bloody find a Uni to get back into to get my Part II. Very, very frustrating.
Even basic architectural jobs are almost impossible to find - I'm beginning to fear I'm so far out of the loop I may never get back in!

Aside.from being one of the least hook-upingest cons I can recall, the Worlds Fair was a blast. Loved the dancing in the street and meeting peeps.

QUAWK! *Wakes up* Sorry 'bout that, Phang.
It was AWESOME! Ut'ni saved me from a not-super-lame-but-still-not-very-cool dance floor and pointed out where the EPIC parking lot party was. Nothing like a live band comprised of two drummers, two Bucket-percussionists, an electric violin, a sax, a trumpet, and a trombone. People dancing in the light of the overhang.
Met some amazing folks. Nice to say I get along in real life with the people that I get along with here. There's always a fear that they won't be the same as their internet personae. I try to just be myself on here, and it was cool to see that I'm not alone in that.
As to hook-ups.... A gentleman does not kiss and tell...
Indifinitive, I met LOTS of people. It was a good opportunity to network with like minded folk. I've also decided that I need to hit Asylum in 2011. There's NO way I can afford to go to England this year, but TimeTinker and ladyelsie were a hoot, so I really want to go check out their event.

I count myself very lucky to have gotten my year-out, having had to sit-out last year in the worst of the recession. And I found after a year out of practice and Uni that although I was a little rusty it took only a few weeks to get back into the swing of things. I've just had feedback from my first choice Uni that they'd like to see more practice-based design work and suggested entering competitions, which may be an idea to 'keep your hand in' until the jobs market picks up. This would be so much easier if we were a few years older- and thus fully qualified- if we were to find ourselves in this situation now we could simply set up our own practices!
