And, by way of "moving on," from that little side-story, I see y'all are talking about dating sights.
EDIT: Oh, sweet, I got the page-wrap double post!

I've never tried one, but my wife and I have been meaning to for some time, but never did.  I got to talking to JingleJoe when they closed down the Steampunk Singles thread, and we kinda sorta hatched an idea.  Neither of us has had time to really investigate it, and I wasn't going to say anything about it until I had, but at this point the idea is in danger of sliding onto the way back burner.

What do y'all think about the idea of a "virtual single's night?"

Half the fear, at least for me, of the dating sights is I don't know anyone, don't know what to expect, don't want to appear skeeevy and desperate, and don't want to attract the skeeeevy and desperate.  Kinda the same things that turn people off from "single's nights."  But it seems like in real life, many folks go in groups to get over that fear, or at least share it.  And if all else fails, you're out with some friends.

So what if we picked a friendly, open, non-closed-minded dating sight, and all signed up at about the same time?  I'm sort of assuming the dating sights have some kind of facebook-like "friends" and "join this group" feature, but I'm not really sure.  Assuming they do, we could use a thread here to coordinate everyone friend-linking (or, if possible, just starting a steampunk club or whatever over there) over there before we really roll up into it.  Then we all get on over there.  Do the same stuff we do in the singles threads here, but do it over there, and maybe we'll draw a few folks over.  At the same time, we're all over there and we strike out a tentacle and see what sticks.

I'm not sure what site to pick.  Investigating them is where I ran out of time, though I still intend to do so.  The polyamory community seems to have de-facto settled on OKcupid.  I've heard some OK stuff about chemistry, but also heard that not many people are on it (at least not down here).

This whole idea may be epicly stupid.  Or it might be so damned crazy it just might work.
What do y'all think?

Well, Joozey and I had a conversation on OKCupid a while back, and Joozey said "They should start a site called OKSteampunk!".  Grin

But anyway, on a more serious note, well, I realised that breaking up with my boyfriend was a mistake. A very bad mistake. Now, I've talked to him, and he says that he still loves me, and that he's willing to get back with me, but he needs a couple of days to think things through.
The reason why I think it was a mistake was because I came to realise that me going cold turkey on him was exactly that. Going cold turkey and not falling out of love with him. I was on a high when we started going out and I came off that high and I mistook that for me not loving him anymore.
I've never been in love with anyone before and I've never had a proper relationship with someone, so, I didn't know any better.
But all I know is that I still love him, and I sincerely hope that I havn't buggered everything up.

instead of an established site, what about just using a free forum/bbs board?
i'm happy setting one up at any time, it's free and although adverts are annoying, if WE are the ones moderating then anything goes within reason.
i already had a local SP forum but there were only about 5 of us locally on there and it was just general SP.
Someone say yay or nay and i'll go do it if someone else will think of the name for me.

Wouldn't that be us just chatting amongst ourselves?

Well, my thought was that if we set up anything on our own, we're just moving our problem: we already like each other, but we don't live close enough together to hang out.  If we go to an open, established dating sight as a group (again, I'm not sure how group those things are set up, ain't taken time to check into the feasibility of this half-baked scheme) we'd still be able to chat at eachother about relationship stuff to our hearts content, and we might just meet someone in our own area in the process.

For just generic chat rooms, I've been a big fan of Chatzy. Set up any room you want and invite anyone you wish.

Dating sites are blocked in Dubai.  As is any site that gives dating tips, any site with adult content, and Flickr.  Seriously, Flickr is blocked completely.  Is it full of Gays or something?  I don't think they like the gays.  Oddly they don't block torrent sites.

So that'd be me out.  Nice idea though, could be fun.

Last time I checked Flickr was mostly full of people giving each other meaningless "awards" for photos. I've registered twice and forgotten both sets of login details, at which point I gave up. Why should I have to get a Yahoo login to use the site when Photobucket was happy with my Hotmail address?

<lights up a cigar>

I think I'm developing a bad habit. Went out on Saturday and smoked no less than two cigars during the night (they were only little Hamlet cigars, not proper ones, though they were very pleasant). Caught myself today thinking about purchasing another one to smoke on my way home from work. It's bad for me, I shouldn't do it  Embarrassed (Nothing wrong with people smoking if they choose to as long as its not right next to me blowing smoke in my face, just I can't afford, nor do I want, an addiction).

Utini, you should just have said that the girl is nutty from the start. One does not stick it in the crazy. Unless, perhaps, it's so brief a thing as makes no difference. At least, that's my point of view, and you are entitled to challenge it.

My congratulations to Cornelia as well. Still, in light of the recent discussion, I guess I'll have to say that you should take care not to be so feisty as to make things pointless. Everyone enjoys challenges, but not everyone takes so well to outright rebukes. Wink

And I don't see much of a point in moving all of this to some other site. I mean, we all know each other, right? And for someone like me at least there's little point in registering on a dating site, at least for the time being. Apart from me being somewhat apprehensive about the whole idea in the first place...

I'm sorry to hear that, Miss Groves. That really sucks. I'm more than familiar with an alcoholic in the family falling off the wagon, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, either. Like Cornelia said, we're here if you need us.
