I don't mean to sound like a creep Patron Vectras, but your little sidebar says you're an architecture student - just out of curiosity, where do you go to school?

Boston Architectural College!
I live in the Back Bay, currently

EDIT( to connect this to the current state of the thread, the Boston Back Bay was filled in to create land in the late 1800's. Its northern streets are lined with victorian brownstones of great worth. -I live in the last basement apartment available in the whole southern part of the neighborhood with 2 other guys. We figure proximity to school would decrease transport fares, making the extra we pay each month worth every penny. Farther to the south are the famous skyscrapers of Boston and the amazing Boston Public Library! )

I'll see your creepiness and raise you stalking: where might your "The frozen north" be? ;]

So ... what are your thoughts on 111 Huntington?

If you are looking for a professional opinion you will be disappointed. I just started there. New to the City, I am.

R2D2 is fine. Nothing special. Glass and steel. blah.
If the design is looked at from certain design perspectives it can be seen as an effective functional structure.

It would most certainly require a decent arboretum; I dont think I could manage somewhere without trees Smiley Or perhaps I could set up my estate on the edge of the city; look one way and its rolling countryside, look the other and its (if you'll forgive the use) all very "Diagonalley" Cheesy

I agree with you, but there's a big chance of finding your arboretum chopped up in firecase fitting chuncks one day.

I wish such a city could really exist... The Victorian London, the Crystal Palace, embellished by many gears, and brass reflections... Gentleman with black cloaks, walking sticks and top hats, ladies in bustle gowns... all mixed in a whimsical, dreamlike atmosphere... The future and the past joined in a same place. It would be quite exciting! ^^

As long as they made an anachronistic exception for internet connections.. I'd heavily consider it. :-P  I'd miss my pocket-brain though.  I'm lost without a smartphone or pda to keep track of everything for me.

I'd have to agree - mind you, I think "steampunk" relies so heavily on the internet, that it could be considered something that would not only be allowed, but should be provided for free via wireless.

After all, this community wold not exist if it were not for brassgoggles...

And smart phones can be steampunk'd...far smarter in engraved brass.

Indeed, the internet could function as a local public information system. We could have a website, perhaps similar to facebook, which would provide local news, city information, and function as an instantly accessable link between any resident (though I imagine it would be a bit more private, hardly polite to have every interpersonal communication out in public view).

Hmmm.... whats the rent like? Can i openly carry firearms? What are the laws regarding public drunkeness?? All of these things would i have to consider. But probably yes.  Grin

On the question posted here by a few regarding firearms, I know for some it may be a touchy issue, but I feel it is an issue we can deal with. I would suggest those interested acquiring a local permit approved by the city council/administration/whatever. Nothing elaborate or invasive, simply a card stating that you are recognized to be a civil and comptent individual in good standing with the community and are trusted with the responsibilities that come with owning a weapon. Naturally the individual would have to demonstrate these qualities to be approved. Of course I assume you are speaking in regards to period or semi-period pieces, not walking around in a top hat and tails with a Glock hanging off your belt. Cheesy

I should mention to all and sundry that although the ultimate result is not a full-time residential community, this thread IS responsible for bringing Isabella Stormrift and myself together to open the Compass Rose Tea Room, a Victorian/Steampunk tea shop which will be opening in Portland, Oregon, in the second quarter of 2010.  Thank you, everyone!

I believe that Steampunk is more than just brass and watchparts. It's finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic pleasing way. It's living a life that looks old-fashioned, yet speaks to the future.

I'd be in the casino surveillence business if I moved there.  If this is a tourist trap then I'm sure there will be some type of entertainment venue and they'll need security.

What? You're opening a tea shop? Next time I'm around that area (meaning 'in the US'), I'll see if I can nip down and have a look.

Is there anyone interested in the UK? The British Steampunk Settlement thread is devoid of any posters besides me...

I'm starting to think gerrymandering a small village is best.

I would move there within a year, being realistic here.
I do not care for the internet. If everyone sharing my interest is gathered in one city, why need internet?

I would probably attempt selling bone craftings. If that's too luxury for the fragile economy to support, I'll apply for a job at the bakery or somethin'. I guess there's no bakery yet. I'll start the bakery then.

Oh, and Mayor, if that post is available...

If you're in the US, you might be interested in Maine. I hear it has cheap property and low taxes, as well as a small government. Perfect.

I would have to say no, not through desire but through sheer practicality. I go where the work is and I need security right now. I'm quite happy creating my little slice of steampunk where ever I find myself. That said if someone wants to create an online steampunk selfbuild MMORPG. Then yeah.

I second that, although as a disclaimer I must reveal that I already live in Maine.  Wink   Actually he's correct, such a project would do very well here; Maine is known historically as the place one goes to start colonies - Shakers, Quakers, Amish, expatriot hippies, Yankees, Franco-canucks, Acadians, Finns, Somalis, etc. - and Portland is rated one of the most amenable, picturesque, foodie, and artistic cities in the US.
