This is a spinoff from the Proposed Banquet thread. Since that seems to be heading in the Central England direction and is just a bit too far away for an evening jaunt for me so....
Anybody in the West Country, Avon, Gloucestershire, Wales etc. fancy a more local outing and any ideas?

i love the idea of a steam banquet on a train but the midlands one is also too far for me to get to. i would be very interested in a similar gathering in the south.

my main criteria is the presence of a vegetarian option, followed by not being too expensive. otherwise all those locations are easily reachable.

Any preferences?
On the basis of Quality Of Steaminess, I'd incline towards the East Somerset. (Even though I live on the doorstep of the Dean Forest railway)

Yep, I'm sticking my finger in this pie, too. Residing in Worcester is proving quite a boon with all this things going on in this part of the world

May I also post to register an interest... I am South B'ham based, so some of these may be as easy for me to get to as Loughborough!

I say, damned interested in this! I'd heartily recommend the West Somerset Railway myself, and of course the Forest of Dean run

Include me in the list of interested parties. Somerset would be nearest to me, but I'm also in the Worcester area from time to time, so most seem 'do-able'. Of course, if anyone fancies coming down to the 'deep south' at some point we also have the Swanage Railway http://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/

Ah, reminds me of frequent outings to Corfe Castle via the Swanage steamtrain. Happy times.
I shall do some phoning around over the next couple of days (if anyone's in the office on a saturday) and see what the arrangements are. Any preferred timescale for people? Might get a bit more expensive if we leave it until right before Christmas, and they may already be booked up of course.

personally, the further away the better works for me because then i will have time to save up for it. it may get more expensive round christmas, but i have to confess that i love the thought of doing a christmas special, as i haven't done one for years.

The way my diary is looking for October it will be no sooner than November... besides, the exhibition in Oxford is my steamy outing for the month.

Okay, Most of the people I've spoken to aren't running steam trains (other than their Santa Specials) beyond the start of December so I think we have two possible routes. I've not been able to contact the Gloucester/Warwickshire railway yet. 1)December the 18th (wednesday) at 7:30 pm. The East Somerset Railway leaving from Cranmore Station. £32.50 per head, Christmas Meal menu: Smoked Salmon/Baked Brie/Pate followed by Roast Beef or Turkey or Tomato, Pepper and Cream Tart and then desserts. We can have a group booking and be all seated together but in tables of 4. See here: http://www.eastsomersetrailway.com/page.php?pid=54 for details. 2)November 1st any time of day on the Dean Forest railway. Bring our own punknic and arrange a group booking, if we have 16-26 we can book a whole coach. We can book a whole day if we want. Day tickets are £10 and we get a 15% discount for booking 20+ people. OR.... We could do this http://www.deanforestrailway.co.uk/event_halloween.html, maybe theme up as a Steamy Ghostbusters group! I think that could be a lot of fun...

Sunday 1st November sounds good to us as we've arranged it off work anyway as the original plan was to go to Whitby.
The Halloween event sounds somewhat child-orientated, however it's the company you're with that makes an event, I'm sure we could create our own suitably sinister atmosphere (*starts planning Mad Scientist costume*). It'd be easier for us if we had somewhere to stay over that evening too, so we'll be looking for an inexpensive place to stay the night with this option.
