Kelham Island Museum is a little known gem of a place. The buildings were originally a generating station for the City's trams, and it houses one of the world's largest working steam engines, a 120 degree triple cylinder rated at 12000 horse power, as well as many other delights.
For the inner Steampunk, while there is a pleasant enough cafe on site, the Fat Cat pub close by offers delicious food and a wide range of beers and cider. The same company owns the Kelham Island Brewery just across the road.
So might we have interest out there for a meeting of Steampunks at Kelham Island?

Sounds good, I could probably make a Sunday and at a stretch saturday but on a saturday i would have to bring the coglings, weekdasya re an option for me, could always take a day off from work

The Sheffield Space Centre bookshop is within walking distance, as is the giant ferris wheel in the City centre.
A friend if mine runs the Ghost Walks, he take private parties.

Sounds like an interesting day out, do they fire the engine up? The pump house at cromford has a lovely one, but they only open to the public a few times a year. Think they spend the rest of the time polishing, by the shine on it, their brasso bill must be huge...

Yes the rolling mill engine is run regularly, there is also a large Crossley gas engine that is often left to tickover all day. There's the possibility looming here of a visit to other Sheffield attractions? A promenade along the river to the Space Centre shop at the very least.

I see a problem here possibly. Sunday would be a good day for working folks, but the Space Centre is not open on Sundays. I visited the Space Centre recently it's stuffed with SF books comics, mags and things.
But Auntie, of course we should be wearing our 'Sunday Best' for this event, whatever that means to anyone. And gyxile, if the 'coglings' (love that expression) have any interest in old things they should enjoy themselves. The big engine is awesome, there's old cars and motorbikes, and a shop and cafe. Depending on the coglings ages, there is a children's play area too.
The rolling mill engine had a boiler fault when I visited about a week ago, they had expected it to be mended within two weeks- so I shall make enquiries about it and which days it is expected to be running.
Just checking on their website, their Annual 'Victorian Christmas Fair' is held on the 5th and 6th of December. We could attend this event as a group and fit right in.

The Victorian Christmas fair is a little disappointing. It is basically a cheesy craft fair where the stall holders wear mob caps and aprons. We would be up for a visit on a normal day but the Christmas Fair is just busy for the sake of it.

Please don't let us put you off going to the Victorian Christmas. I know lot's about the perils of trying to organise Steampunks.
I can only be honest and say we won't be attending if the chosen day is for that event but we would not be upset if that remained the selected visit.

Any sunday suits me, and most saturdays with a bit of notice. The fact that it takes a while to agree means more people can meet. That has to be a good thing. And I can shop anytime. Shiny engines are the main priority I reckon, with the chance of a beverage or two close second....

The Major is right about the Christmas Market at Kelham Island, i did it last year and eas very dissapointed in the market.The only items which interested me was the chap making clogs, otherwise fairly dissapointing, we could (and have) done better. My normal clothing tended to look more authentic than the costumes. Museum was excellent though and always worth a look.
A better bet would be to do a weekend when the continental/craft Market is on Fargate, especially if the hat stall and leather stalls are on (I got my binocculars case there). The big ferris wheel should still be running, and stands right next to the listed Town Hall. I can check the dates, but this is usually 2nd weekend in December.

A agree with Mr.Harrow that a good time for a meet would be to coincide with the Continental Market, which is listed at events Sheffield as being the 5th to 8th November. This would mean that Sunday the 8th November is sizing up to be a possible meeting date for those who like the idea of visiting KI then 'doing' the market on Fargate.

The Sunday looks good for me as well, its a couple of months off, but not too far, though I suspect everyone will have fireworks parties the day before. Lunch at the Fatcat would be good, excellent when I ate there last in April. I know several people not on BG who might join as well. The Old Queens head by the Transport Interchange is also civilized but not as good beer or food.

For a bowler, try Freshmans off Division Street, or Rocky Horrors along Division Street in Sheffield. Black only I am afraid. Otherwise try the hat stalls on the Continental Market.
