That Sartmax figure is a Tau in an Ork Dreadnought body! But yes, by all means let us away from the empire of Games Workshop, delightful though some of their models are.

Hurray for more 40K players ( Cadians! ) playing for a Steam Punk theme!
I'm thinking of doing my armor to the same.
And it's always nice for RPG gamings to find the odd / cool lead character.

You see a Tao, I see a Pod Race Pit droid.  Grin

But ya, Space Hulk is the first of my money GW has seen in years.  I'm way more interested in odd ball stuff that's fun, rather than tournament oriented competitiveness.

Besides, that's what Flames of War is for!  Cool

Just saw these, too, and figured the new Wings of War stuff (not yet released, coming soon) might be relevant to the interests of someone around here:

Well gentlemen and ladies

It is now my turn to commit heresy.

While I know there are a great many steampunk miniatures out there in the 25mm to 32mm scale range (And I own a fair few), I have recently decided to make a break with this tradition and go down the toy soldier route.

Last night I assembled 8 of the irregular miniatures 42mm Deutsche Homage Range miniatures. Two Zulus, two African tribesmen and a group of 3 sailors and a gentleman that I intend to paint as Captain Nemo and his crew.

While these are not fine scale by any means they are charming and I think they have a certain "Victoriana" feel to them.

Future projects will be British Amazon Rifles, martians and deep sea divers, although I might have to sculpt some of my own for these. I also intend to build some vehicles to match - Including a sea worthy gunboat.

I will post pictures when I have some painted.

Sweet!  Not my scale (I tend to drift smaller than standard, not bigger.  Yo, 6mm!) but that still sounds great and I'd love to see them when you're done.   And there is something undeniably Victorian about toy soldiers.  So, now, I gotta ask... are you going to play using H. G. Wells rule set?  Are ya? Are ya?

"Little Wars; a game for boys from twelve years of age to one hundred and fifty"

Its a cute little book, pretty easy to find in print, or you can download the text (legally, its pretty old) from here:

Hi Utini

I have owned a copy of Little Wars for many years. The only draw back is the use of live fire - my poor soldiers!

It will probably be a derivative of little was using the old Diplomacy maxim of might is right.

Speaking of diplomacy, I once played that with an old map world map and a selection of vintage toys - magical!

PS - As soon as I have some pictures I will post them.

SmartMax released pics of two new ones today:

FU MANCHU isn't really what this character is to me (thank Alan Moore for that) but its nice:

KAIN FINGER, on the other hand, couldn't be more Steampunk if he tried.  Looks like a perfect figure for Spring Heeled Jack to me.

My only lament here, and its one I've said before and am sure to repeat, is why oh dear god why were these figures not released in a conventional gaming scale?  I even asked the artist, and heard back nothing.  NOTHING! Bad bad incompatible scales!  Bad!  Bad!

Either of those look like they could be included in any game in any scale though, either as giant creatures or little imps. Certainly worth looking at! Steampunk vampires versus steampunk ninja armies eh.... there's a thought....

My partner's had to run off to his jewellery workshop class, but asked me to post a note on here for him.

Says he can't believe he missed this thread ... one of the problems of not being able to spend every waking minute on BG, I guess!  Dammit, real life does get in the way sometimes!

Anyhoo, he'd like to gently wave your attention towards some 28mm Victorian Sci-fi type chappies that Black Pyramid Gaming have released as the initial part of the The Tea Wars range.  (The company's been going for almost a year now, and David is one of its founders, so yes, slightly shameful plug here!)

D has a soft spot for the Praetorian Guard from the GW range, so when the chance to come up with some cool figures happened, he couldn't resist.  They're multipart, with different rifles, including an aether rifle.  The faces have been sculpted with a bit of personality, which is always nice.  Put it this way, when the lads got the initial 'greens' back, they figured the sculptor had definitely been watching Zulu for inspiration!

If you want to see some pics other than those on the website, I've got some on my Picasa page.  Looking at them, they're all of the original sculpts, not of the actual cast miniatures.  Hmm, will have to rectify that at some point.  The horse hasn't yet made it into production, D's still working on it.

While I think about it, the Uncharted Seas range by Spartan has a few nice ships, and undead Orca whales, and at the Canterbury tournament the other weekend, we saw a lovely paint job which was very steampunky with kapok painted grey-green as smoke coming out of the chimneys!  There's an airship due out soon too, pic here.

Feel free to give feedback as I know the lads are open to suggestions and so forth.

Cheers!

Spartan Games has been teasing me with their "comming soon" air pirate fleet for some time now.  The Buggers.  Wink

Wish David luck for us, always rooting for the little guys.

I'm a big Catalyst fan since they picked up battletech. Their new WWI airship game Leviathans (monstersinthesky.com) will have a new line of miniatures soon.

Brigade Models (http://www.brigademodels.co.uk) makes some awesome stuff for aeronef and land Ironclads for all your steampunk wargame needs.

Battletech!

Now there is a game that is crying out to be thoroughly steamed!

Mind you that's effectively what I did with after FASA ruined it for everyone. I think I've still got some of my rule amendments and concept sketches somewhere in the attic...

I refuse to play battle tech until I can play with the mecha from RoboTech/Macross again, Harmony Gold and IP law be damned.

That would be the Battletech Compendium and Readout 3025. Look them up under Classic Battletech (Ral Partha) and Battleforce UK.

Over on this side of the pond there were some break away factions like the Lost Legion who wouldn't engage in a tech race (particularly when they predicted that it would end in nuclear war - quite an accurate prediction in the end...)

If there are any classic players out there, I would be interested in creating a fusion background between mecha and Fireflie.

Just a thought.

Oh, trust me, some of the locals keep telling me how easy it would be to get back into it.  Rules aren't the problem, miniatures are, as I morbidly hate and loath the redesigned, "unseen" or whatever they call them now.  They are similar, but not the same.  None of the new mecha designs from Catalist do anything for me, and most of FASAs never did.

This is a Warhamer:

NOT this:

While I encourage others to play any game they please, BattleTech is at present not for me, unless I find a hoard of ancient miniatures or a half-decent re-caster.  But the bootlegs I've seen looked like trash, and I won't pay eBay prices.
