Elvis didn't listen to Ackbars and was "Caught in a Trap" 'Star Wars' was released in May '77..Elvis died in August '77 and was a real blimp by that time. He looks reasonably slim in that photo. So, unless he piled on about 100lbs in three months it has to be a mock up! In fact..Vader's probably saying "I find your lack of fat...disturbing! It's a clever edit of this: More details here; the story behind it is... interesting, to say the least. Curse you and your facts :-)

Nah!! That's 'J. Arthur'..from 'J. Arthur Rank'..'Sherman' is rhyming slang for 'an American'. 'Sherman Tank'= 'yank'. Might be a regional thing. Where I grew up, we certainly (though perhaps wrongly) used 'Sherman Tank' for that. It might also be age-related. When I was in secondary school (in the 90s) everyone knew what a Sherman tank was, thanks to the Gulf War, but J. Arthur Rank might not have been so well-known.

I have never heard of Sherman Tank being a euphemism for masturbation (over 6.2 million phrases have been misappropriated for this purpose and counting, soon the use of words to solve made-up problems instead of violence will be impossible because noone will know what you're saying) nor as slang for Americans (the exact model of tank in question is not a Sherman but the one used for blackwater.....)

Nah!! That's 'J. Arthur'..from 'J. Arthur Rank'..'Sherman' is rhyming slang for 'an American'. 'Sherman Tank'= 'yank'. According to my 80 year old Mother-In-Law the most prevalent euphemism for the Americans stationed on British soil during WWII was 'septic' as in septic tank; yank. Rather unfair to equate them with a sewage treatment system but I guess, in a way, dealing with the Nazi threat could be likened to 'taking out the garbage'. Coincidentally, in some quarters the word 'yank' itself is a euphemism for the onanistic pastime.

When I was in secondary school (in the 90s) everyone knew what a Sherman tank was, thanks to the Gulf War, but J. Arthur Rank might not have been so well-known. Going to pull rank here (no pun intended)..and say that being born and raised in the east end of London I feel my knowledge of 'Cockney Rhyming Slang' may be somewhat wider than yours. Although I admit that there is rhyming slang from all over the UK and the regional accent makes all the difference. I knew a Scottish guy a few years back who used some choice rhyming slang that rhymed with the Scots pronounciation of certain words to great effect..ie going into a pub and asking for 'a pint of Mick Jagger' (which is lager..but with the Glaswegian accent it's 'lagger'). Also, as you say, it's an age thing. By the sound of it I'm about 25-30 years your senior so there's bound to be certain phrases that utilise a name or person that to someone your age means nothing ('J.Arthur Rank' being a prime example). According to my 80 year old Mother-In-Law the most prevalent euphemism for the Americans stationed on British soil during WWII was 'septic' as in septic tank; yank Here ya go..a perfect example of how different generations interpret these things. I've also heard 'septic' being used to mean 'yank'. Also..if one is not in favour of Americans one can be referred to as being ''Listerine'..ie 'anti-septic'

Well I see this has brought a whole new avenue to the conversation...... I guess having guests stay more than a week gave the British public a poor view of Americans as allies said to see it is so entrenched in the memory.....

"Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you."

Try right clicking and selecting "open image in new tab". It doesn't always work, but is generally worth a shot.
