Ha ha, I feel no need to defend it as such, but I do like some of it. Although many of the bands seem to be adding guitars and going a bit more metal or rock, (not selling I guess) I was interested to see that Combi Christ were supporting Rammstein recently. I always thought they were one of the better exponents. And I've also noticed some of the more mainstream dance people I know have finally got into it as well. The funny thing is that most of my favourite hardcore industrial techno, doesn't come from EBM or Aggro Tech bands at all!

Perssonally, I'm a big fan of mid-80's EBM, stuff like Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Click-Click, A Split Second, Neon Judgment, Mussolini Headkick, and even some 90's artists like Projecct Pitchfork, Forma Tadre (A huge influence on our bands sound), and And One.

cant really say im too much into the music it seems alot like the same crap hipsters listen to. im sorry but i must say im sticking with my cyberpunk and ebm. but thats just music i do like doctor steel and abney park bands who really get it in my opinion i do love the aesthetic and what not especially that one badge by alchemy gothic, but i regress there must be heavier steampunk bands out there or is it up to me to go make one

I can't think of a single Steampunk influenced band that a Hipster would be caught dead listening to. What in the style have you heard? There is a lot of heavier music in Steampunk. Including some of our material.

However I am interested how is steamy music (genre?) defined?

I know the whole put the art into a genre is hard and almost impossible from a musical side there are some rules how to do so, the only problem, music should have no rules or boundaries.

Few of the bands could easily slip into dark goth genre, some are folkish, many deviantly stepping into many genres, what is that line that connects them all together to fit into this thread?

Can be the ones like The Covenant be considered steamy music as there are some elements in their music I see that way, dammit, this is loads of fun !

Also looking if any recommendation on some heavier/metalish music good to start with

Someone once said "a true artist is someone who joins the seemingly unjoinable" (something like that anyway  ) I believe potentially everything has a place here. I think It's a question of viewing it through an antiquated lens so to speak. Some people are turning their hands to that with great success, others are still working on it. Suffice to say, there's plenty of areas still to be explored and (I feel anyway) lots of steamy goodness still to come, as well as what's already here.

Piggybacking off of Cal's self-promotion idea...

I'm working on making costumes for an awesome up-and-coming steampunk/carnivale noir band called "V is for Villains." They have an electronica/rock/metal sound and plan on having highly theatrical performances. The Villains currently have one song up on youtube. Apparat Organ Quartet:  yes it's synth but more crude and analog.  It's basically 4 guys surrounded organs or keyboards.  Also they still use a real drummer for their beats. 

They used to play old Hammond organs but switched to portables keyboards because it was such a pain to tour.

Cuz let's face it...with all the music styles available to steampunkers, sometimes, you just wanna "rock out, with your clock out"!!! Sorry...call dibbs on that one lol!
 
You know what they call that guy that's always hanging out with the musicians in the band? The drummer. That would be me on the skins lol! We do largely original stuff, but have a bunch of covers to keep the masses happy. And I'm not talking Journey covers. More info later as to our name and schtick...can't give away company secrets as of yet.

Meanwhile, get out there and support your local Steampunk bands!

yeah unfortunately i don't have the time to update that list. The idea was that the list would be ever growing as people added their own responses. The initial list was just what I knew of at the time I posted it lol.

Perhaps the least offensive way to avoid dividing the list into sub-genres would be to list the instruments/equipment used by each act. This could be a bit cumbersome, but perhaps less so than parsing the groups into various categories and giving each a name (names alone might cause serious sectarian squabbles, I suspect).
My tastes run in both acoustic and electronic directions, but I think I should point out that though both the Dresden Dolls and Squirrel Nut Zippers are acoustic, they sound nothing alike. The same diversity exists in electronic music. My personal musical efforts are aimed at synthesizing electronic and acoustic styles. I play mostly keyboards, but also string instruments, percussion and recorders (both woodwinds and the kind with microphones). I don't understand the confinement of choosing one set of options to the exclusion of another.
