...but this one's special because its mine :-)

this is my first steampunk project, so you'll have to excuse the amateur-execution. I've loved steampunk since before i knew it had a name, but have only just started to have a go at making things.
My enthusiasm is only slightly hampered by my complete lack of skill, knowledge, ability or budget. for example i even had to ask my brother about how to wire up the switch on this because having two wires and three connections confuseled my overtaxed little brain.
still, all's well that ends well, and i'm pleased with my lamp. i found an old bicycle lamp in a junk shop and inserted a modern halogen light into it to make it useable. I used a modern brass lamp arm because i couldn't think of a way to fake it successfully (and it was only £9.99) and a brass flower bowl for the base with a dimmer touch switch inserted.
the best thing about this lamp is that the bulb is at the back of the lamp, so the little green and red crystals on either side light up when its on. this is so you know whether your desk is facing port or starboard.

Very nice job. Great creativity. You have an excellent eye for design, my dear lady. With a little brass polish, that lamp would light a room even when it's turned off.

Very nice! I personally like the aged look rather than polished, but that piece would look good either way!

*breathes HUGE sigh of relief*
thank you all for saying nice things. i hadn't realised until i pressed 'post' how much i dreaded the opposite. A very nice welcome to the forum :-D
i didn't polish it up because i liked the aged patina better as well, but more relevantly it would never have polished up well as something that looked new and shiny and professional - at least aged it looks like it acquired those bashes and bodges over a long and useful life rather than at the hand of the inept.

That is very nice work, I love it.  Smiley   Welcome to the forum!  Grin

I've had a lamp project on hold for a couple of months now - the lamp is finished, but there is a distinct lack of a cable and switch...  I just couldn't find a switch that looked good on the lamp cord, and it's base does not lend itself to installing a switch there either. Undecided   Think I'm just going to have to use a plastic in-line switch and be done with it. *sigh*

thank you - without the benefit of telepathy or slightly creepy cctv, you're all going to just have to imagine me grinning like the top of my head might come off.

This seems like as good a place as any to ask a little advice for my new project - I'm steaming a set of theatre/opera glasses. They're made of hard plastic (no idea what kind) and i'd like to cover them in leather. Does anyone know what a readily available glue in England might be that would successfuly glue leather to plastic? I've asked Prof.Google, but all the suggestions seem to be brands only available in the US.

I would say the glue used for leather shoes (cobbler's glue) would probably be a winner here - it's used for exactly the same propose. Wink

Interesting note about cobbler's glue: it smells just like (really strong) 'Pear drops' sweets - mainly because the same chemical solvent is used for both!  The Chemical is an Ester called Isoamyl acetate. I don't recommend you eat the glue however...   Grin

Madam Mim, may I add my voice to the chorus? Really gorgeous work.

You might try a wonderful little site, http://www.thistothat.com/. Hopefully it will include adhesives available to you.

Siliconous Skumins - Thank you, that is a good thought. I will go and pester my local Timpson's on saturday and see if they can sell me something suitably Wonka-flavoured.
K. D. R. Tempus - thank you, i had seen that site, but i think it is practically all US brands. the one they suggest for this project is called 'Barges' and I've never seen that in the UK. however i'd be very happy to be corrected.

That is a very wonderful thing. Well done.

You have "The Eye."

Don't even think about polishing it. The patina is spot on.

So? What's next?
