« on: June 09, 2009, 01:23:26 pm »

hey all

I'm going to a masquerade ball in a couple of weeks and wanted a really tripped out steampunk mask.
i have the shell and some mild idea of what i want to do, but i thought... I know, I'll ask the lads and Lady's over at BG!

here is my Shell.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

and some of my possible components.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

i also thought for the eyes i could have round vents like this

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
only in brass

hope you guys can help!

they sell plastic thread covers for thrreaded electrical conduit, to prevent the wire from getting cut by burrs. you could get a pair or more to add round eye cups. maybe even cut off the top edge so it looks like theyre under the eyebrows of the mask a bit. a few extra smaller ones would add a bug like creepy effect. some sort of gears on the jaw to open and close it maybe? at least to look like it does.

a corrugated hose from the mask to a respirator can of some sort, so it looks like it's more like a gas mask?

it's a little harder to find them now but those cheap top hats and bowlers that seem to go on sale around halloween are usually on the huge side (one size fits over everyone, just not very well) it might easily be riveted to the mask? use bolts or something as easy and visible.

I was planning on getting one and varnishing the thing enough to then paint it to look metallic. adding rivet heads everywhere. trouble is I'm a bit of a pinhead. I would need to make an inner support ring just to keep it above my ears.

hmm, the mask with a bowler or top hat with a small cannister hung from the rear brim, with two hoses running around the sides to the mask, like mutton chop sideburns.

cheers

i was thinking of a bowler with the mask, that would look choice,

i was also thinking of carving a mustache out of wood, laquering it and afixing it to the mask.

i like the mutton chop hoses idea very much!

thanks Otto

You could make a telescopic 'monocle' complete with a gold chain.

a monocle, nice,

my eye peices at the moment have such a visibility problem, i ran into a door frame trying it on.

i still dont know what to make then mustache out of, maybe really copper tube bundled together and shaped into  a mustache shape.

this is what i have so far,

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

the eyes are way to bug like in my opinion, plus as i said the visibility is shocking.
everything is currently tacked on with bluetack,
so its not hard to change it!

They look bug-eyed because they're big and symmetrical. If you can, I'd find another unique piece for one of the eyes. That ought to eliminate the bugeye look, and add a touch of character to the mask... well, ANOTHER touch of character. Cheesy

oooh, french door handles for the mustache?

I love using a putty epoxy to blend items together like your parts to the mask. the one I really like is water cleanup. its especially nice because you can wet your finger and smooth the finish to where you don't even need to sand much after it dries.

i was thinking of attaching everything with this putty epoxy
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

its about 15 dollars and its pretty good, used it in the past. also i can smooth it down nicely with wet fingers.
with what i have left over i can make more things in jars, one down so far.

if i can find nice door handles, then thanks for the great idea,
the photo shopped on ones are actually from a vinyl toy.

Hmm. I would go for something telescopic on one of the eyes - perhaps a goggle lens, or maybe the cannibalised lense from an old camera/telescope etc.

The camera lens idea sounds good, also maybe try to cut a hole in the mask so the right eye piece fits in more, make it look less stuck on and more like its made that way.

also an idea for painting it, you could spray it with a bronze spraypaint and then drybrush some black onto it before you put on the rivets, give it a sorta grubby bronzed look that would look really cool

best of luck!!!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

i'm really happy with it, at first i didnt like the welding slag look, but after i painted it, its grown on me,
all i need now is some sun glass slenses to sit behind and obscure my eyes.

hope you guys like it.

Very good work here. The mixmatch of materials adds a brilliant effect, and yet it doesn't look crowded.

Looks fantastic. From the front, it doesn't look like Iron Man at all anymore, too. Awesome.  Cheesy
