When I first saw the trailers I was expecting it to be yet another horrible Hollywood adaptation, I believe the original term I used was "close to the books if you lit the entire collection on fire and threw it out the window". Which wasn't entirely untrue. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the film, one of the first I've enjoyed in a while. It was well acted, well written, and well paced, as well as having great ambiance, which for me is very important. I am very much looking forward to the sequel. Must say I do agree with you here. Whilst I, and my family, are rather large fans of Jeremy Brett as Holmes, Downey's attempt wasn't too bad, was 'different'. Thoroughly enjoyed the film, and I will be looking forward to a sequel...so long as they do not mess that up.

I was intrigued when Downey commented that Holmes and Watson might be more evidently lovers in the sequel-- that's not something I would have thought possible in a Hollywood movie. And then of course I turned out to be right, as the US copyright holder got all in a tither about the comments and threatened to prevent the film from moving forward Oh, well. I thought the Holmes/Watson match was brilliant in this film, so as long as they don't change anything, it should be good

It was announced a day or two back that none other than Stephen ('a national treasure') Fry has signed up to play Mycroft Holmes in Guy Ritchie's sequel to Sherlock Holmes.
Thoughts?

Stephen Fry is awesome. Guy Ritchie isn't.
It's going to probably be as shit as the first. Any Fry based genious will be trashed by horrible London Gangsta direction and bizzare post production effects.
I'd much rather see Fry in the BBC version.

I think Fry is perfect for the role. Oh and Rob, I hear that there will be scenes where Mycroft uses a form of kendo against some common street thugs.

Back in the 90's, when Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie were starring in the excellent 'Jeeves and Wooster' he said in an interview that he and Laurie were huge fans of both PG Wodehouse and Conan Doyle and the two roles they most wanted to play were Jeeves and Wooster and Holmes and Watson. I think they would have made a superb H&W (with Fry as Holmes, naturally and Laurie making a fine Watson). Of course Laurie later went on to play Holmes..except then he was called Gregory House.

I have to agree I particularly liked that Dr Watson was portrayed as he was in the original books not as a bumbling fool, but as a hardened army Doctor who had seen service in one of the nastiest wars of the time..

"Get that out of my face..."
Their timing worked so well together- (the first movie) as long as they don't botch it up this time. Meaning - it was so fresh the first time I hope they don't overdo it in the second film.
I really enjoyed the 'twist' on both Holmes and Watson in the first movie - Holmes being far more 'physical' and Watson being far more ... everything. More an individual character and less an 'appendage'.
Have marked my calendar!

Not one I'm intending on seeing, the filming piddled me off enough (They converted part of my workplace, a 16thC kitchen into a late 19thC French hotel)....FFS use the Pav it is a lot closer in date and wouldn't have effed up two weeks of education visits. But powers that be worshipping the almighty film dollar *spit*
