The Countess has informed me that some friends of ours are going to the 'Destination Star Trek' convention at the Excel in October. Now, we're not Trekkies by any stretch of the imagination but we used to really enjoy the Buffy and Angel conventions we used attend between '98 and '03 (although we were both big Buffy/Angel fans) and The Countess was getting nostalgic for the 'convention scene' (especially the socialising and parties) and asked if I fancied going along to this. Well at the moment I can't say for sure. The tickets are a tad steep for something we're not THAT into but in case we do eventually go I want to be prepared and I've had an idea I want to run by you guys. I have a red bib fronted shirt I also have a pair of black jodhpurs. I was thinking of tacking a couple of gold bands around the cuffs of the shirt, having a black turtle neck 'dicky' (a la Howard Wolowitz) under the shirt, an Enterprise emblem badge pinned on the chest (maybe a slight variation with some sort of added cog motif) and I have either black riding boots or knee high fold over 'pirate' boots. Do you think that would say 'Steampunk Scotty'? I might try and make a steampunk communocator but even if we don't make it to the the Trek Con I can still wear it one night at Asylum. Opinions? Suggestions?

Steampunk tricorder, phaser, communicator
I'm not that great a 'maker' and I don't want to have to make loads of props I then need to carry about all day. I can probably cobble up a steamy communicator to hook on my belt and I have a clunky looking ray gun as a phaser but it no longer has the telescopic sight attached...and tri-corders are more associated with Spock than Scotty. I realise that when it comes to Star Trek, red shirts are normal associated with 'Ensign Expendable' but Scotty is one of the main (ie recognisable) characters. If my shirt had been this colour then I would go for a Steampunk Kirk but it's red so Scotty it is!

You can get a candlestick phone plug in for most mobiles, one of those would do for your communicator.
Steampunk tricorder is easy, a nice wooden box on a leather strap with a barometer, thermometer, hygrometer, compass etc built in, on the top with a portable plasma disk in the front.

If memory serves, weren't tricorders carried in a black leather rectangular pouch that hang at the hip with a long shoulder strap? If nothing else, a small black satchel would be useful for carrying small items (pocket program, etc.).

Kilts have made an appearance on the show,so you can start there. To be honest, I think a Steampunk Borg would be the bees knees...

Aye sir, this is a great idea. The shirt you've there is wonderful, I think anyway. You might try adding a tool belt loaded some steamy-star-trek-tools. I see that I've been beat to adding Steam Trek to this thread. What a gem of a thing.

You need a nice big piece of coal held in a brass container a la Dilthium Crystals. Oh hold on a minute the standard container looks brass anyhow. You could replicate that looking at the google images, and go around muttering about needing to change the Carboniferous minerals.
As Scotty, you also need a nice bottle of something alcoholic.

I saw some Steampunk Star Trek badge at either Chatham or the London Steampunk market... I'll try to find out where it was.

The original communicators would be very easy to make and or mod (I would suggest mod since you can buy one that makes that most awesome sound when you open it).

Oh, you can get almost any kit you want from any of the shows, if you're willing to pay enough... like...hundreds of dollars (back in the 90's, haven't been to a convention since... The trick would be 'steampunking' it to fit the times; but we have a whole 'nother forum for that.

Slightly OT but I'd just like to mention that I am still disappointed that no cell phone company has yet (that I am aware and I'm reasonably sure I'd hear of it) to make a special edition cell phone that looks like this, and that chirps like that when you open it to answer it.
Dammit, Jim, there's a market for that!
