Last time I was at Disneyland, the price was closer to 70USD for one adult ticket. That is, if I remember correctly.

I happened to be in Eastern Tn too (half way between Chatt & Knox) I haven't really seen much of anything around here, but I just prefer the quiet of home (and my dremel)

Jesus god, the Biltmore is expensive. I know it's gorgeous, but $45-$59 is quite a lot of money. It's spendy, but at the same time, it's not like you can say, "You know what? Screw this, I'm going to the OTHER Biltmore that only charges $20 to get in!" They must not have trouble getting people to pay it. I guess i figure, it's a singular experience. I wouldn't go more than once in a blue moon, but i've paid more than that for a sit-down dinner in a fine restaurant so for a special occasion, i'd do it. Looking around at other historic mansions' websites (Winchester Mystery House, House on the Rock, Graceland, Monticello) the going rate seems to be around $25-40 to get in. Leave it to the Vanderbilts to rip you off a little bit more than everyone else! [1] [1] Not that they still own it. Just being silly.

It seems like last time I was there it was the "off" season, and the tickets weren't nearly that expensive! Hmmm....I'll have to look into it.
I'm speaking of Biltmore, by the by.

Actually... While I'm not sure that his last name is "Vanderbilt," the last I knew it was/is still owned by the family, and they live in one of the smaller (by comparison) cottages that exist on the grounds. (Bear in mind my information is about four or five years old now...)

I just visited the Winchester house this summer, it was pretty amazing. Viewing the beautiful stained glass windows throughout the house alone was worth the ticket price.

This is a completely silly post. Please feel free to ignore it, as, due to my job, I have been awake MUCH too long.
"Biltmore", when I saw it, was misread with interest as "Kenmore" (I said I have been awake too long). South of Richmond, VA, there is an (apparently) famous "Kenmore Plantation". When I first saw the signs, the image that came to mind was a field of old Sears and Roebuck appliances, growing from the ground, a la "Carhenge". I DO need to sleep soon.

I have a proposal for a future meeting. In my home city docks the Belle of Louisville, the oldest river steamboat still in operation. Though I'm unsure of the cost, the Belle can be rented out by a group, and according the website the staff will help plan "themed parties", which certainly sounds to me like they will be willing to remove the plastic lawn chairs from the deck (which is frankly all I imagine would be needed for the place to feel utterly Steampunk appropriate).

(Bear in mind my information is about four or five years old now...) *looks it up* No, you are right--i misremembered. They did cede a whole huge section of the estate to the government to establish a national forest preserve, but i was wrong in thinking that the home itself was owned by North Carolina now. I guess technically it's a company that own the estate, but you are correct in that the company's run by a descendant of Vanderbilt (whose surname is Cecil). Interesting!

Hmm, I've always wanted to attend a boat party... How much is it to rent?

For Tristen... Here is a picture of the Belle of Louisville and the Delta Queen (from here in Cincinnati at the time) at their first race. I went to school with the grandson's of Captain Greene who owned Greene Line Steamers that purchased the Queen in 1946. Unfortunatley she not longer calls Cincinnati home, but still docks here. She still does multiple night cruises up and down the Ohio and Mississippi, but the sad news is it has been announced that she will stop operating at the end of 2008. For everyone else, I know it isn't really South Eastern USA, but here in Cincinnati there are several companies that have diner cruises or will let you charter and entire riverboat (or just a room). The Cincinnati History Museum has a permenate exhibit of what the river front looked like in the 1850's including a 94 foot side wheel river boat you can walk through and see the steam engine working (unfortunatly it is just designed to show you how the working parts moved and is not actually run on steam any longer). Cincinnati is also home to the Tall Stacks fesitval. The next one is scheduled for 2009.

I may be wrong, but I believe that is the current home of the Delta Queen.

Guess we have gone off topic a hair...so the date of Jan 26th is good for most? Location can be decided after the new yr, when we have a stronger idea of numbers and finances? Sound good to the ladies and Gents?
