Bah! Have it in Atlanta! It's the biggest city, and I wouldn't have to figure out a ride. All signs point to yes!

I was actually thinking that Atlanta would be a good place. It seems like a fairly central location for most of the people who've shown interest.

We do need a date, as well. The best time for me may be Christmas break, but I may be required to go visit my mother during all of Christmas break. Which is a bother.

Atlanta does have a lot of nice things to do, though I'm not horribly familiar with the city, as things to do go. Do any of the Atlantians have some suggestions?  Grin

Our good Baron Von Sasha is from Atlanta, or at least I think so. I have a few friends in that area as well, but Christmas would be right out for me as I have my children that entire month Smiley

I am indeed an Atlanta local. I would think Little Five Points would be a good starting location. As for when, any time that's not mid November. Atlanta's better when it gets cold. Seems far off, but early January would still be winter break, but all the family obligations will be over. I'm fine with whenever, though.

January would be very good for me Smiley

My next question: What do a group of Steamy miscreants do in little five points? (remembering that some are minors)

I'm from Birmingham Alabama... though I'm currently attending school in Starkville Mississippi.

As we say in these parts, "Howdy neighbor!"  (Okay, we really don't say that except to make fun of the stereotype, but I just couldn't resist.)  What a pleasant surprise to see postings here from several folks who hail from these lands under the gaze of the world's largest cast iron statue.

Perhaps we should have our own little gathering at Sloss Furnace and take some photos?  It has been quite some time since I visited there, and well before I discovered the joys of steampunk, but as I recall there are some SUPERB steampunk backgrounds there!

Any takers?

Well, we could always get some food and take the airs about town. I'm sure we can find some nice backdrops for picture-taking.

January would also work for me. I was looking at the Five Points website and it seems like a neat area. One thing we could always do, which seems to be a staple for many meet ups [steampunk and non] would be get some delicious food. And Five Points seems like a place to grab some delicious, and hopefully cheap, food. It also seems like there are some neat shops, and live entertainment could be fun too.

And like Insanity mentioned, we can always take pictures.

Hello all!

I'm new to the forum and thought it best to introduce myself here as I'm from this 'neck of the woods'. I was wondering if any Floridians out there were from the Treasure Coast and if there were any existing local steampunk groups. (As the crew I was with has moved out of the area and left me alone.)

The planed gathering sounds like great fun, thought I would be unable to go. I heard that there had been a steampunk mini-party associated with the pirate party at DragonCon (which, of course, I didn't find out about until after the fact). I realize that it might be a bit far off to be planing for August 2008, but does anyone know if they are going to do it again?

Well, throw this South Western Kentucky Boy into the mix.  I'm living in Bowling Green for the foreseeable future, thanks to a house I'm waiting to get the previous owner moved out of.

New to the forum and having a wonderful time catching up......

Most, if not all, restaurants in Little Five Points require you to be 21 or over just to walk thru the door. I'm trying to think of a place that would have great atmosphere for such a gathering, give me some time and I'll see what I can come up with.

21 or over? That could be a problem. I hope you can think of, or find, a place there that we could all go.

well, the real question is, how much of a problem is it?

Most people under 21 can't really head off to Atlanta on a whim, they have to work out issues with parents, or possibly get a ride to make it.  Actually, with school and work those of us over 21 have issues as well, but that's another matter altogether.

I guess the main thing is, how many of us are under 21, and of those, how many can seriously commit to making the trip?  It might be a non-issue.

Ok, show of hands, who's under 21 and is willing and able to make this meeting of the minds?

So is this just a shopping trip to little five points or is there something else in mind? Dinner? A Show? Movie night? SP Discussion group of literature and lifestyle? Sounds almost like a steampunk Con! L5P does have some nice shops that would interest most Sp'ers for a couple of hours at most. There is one hotel near L5P that I wouldn't let my dog stay at. I did think of three places in L5P that serve under 21, two are pizza and ones a burger joint with no chairs.

I still think Dragon*con might be the best chance for a mass gathering. Considering mainly that it is far enough away that it can make planning much, much easier. However, it will cost more than most ideas. Up's and down's for every plan, I guess.

I'm under 21 and definitely willing.

Captain Ironheart, I personally love pizza, and wouldn't object to meeting at a pizza place. Like I said, I don't know Atlanta that well and I've never been to L5P, so I don't know what we could do there. A bit of shopping around L2P, dinner -with a few hours to chat- and a show could be a lot of fun!

Last time I went to Little 5, we were with a few people who were obviously under 21, and ate lunch at a pub.  I can't remember the name of it, but it was an English-type place about a block down from The Vortex.  We sat out on the porch instead of in the actual bar area, and nobody seemed to have a problem with it.

...and as long as you keep me away from the tequila.  I get absolutely silly when I'm drinking that stuff.  Not gentlemanly at all I'm afraid.

Even though Guinness flows through my veins instead of blood, I would have no problem at all not drinking out of respect for our younger compatriots. 'twould be a sacrifice to let a perfectly good pub go to waste, but I can manage Smiley
