South Eastern USA -- A steampunk connectivity thread

Hello, all!

I am new to the Steampunk Forums, as I guess you can all tell.  I am also new to the whole steampunk aesthetic/lifestyle.  A quick look around the geographical section reveals a few people in TN and SC, but I thought an all inclusive thread would be nice.

I, for one, am from Alabama.  It is not really as bad as it sounds, but then again, I did not even know about steampunk (beyond a few films and animes) until a few weeks ago.  Depending on your view, that could mean either Alabama, or I, am absolutely horrible. 

Hmmm, well either way, hello again.  Nice to meet you.  Please, if you are in the South East or near and do not mind revealing that secret location, it would be nice to know a little bit more about you and see if I am  the only one with a love of the Steam aesthetic.  Who knows, maybe we could all get together for a steam party at some point and time--or just meet at Dragon con when it comes back to Atlanta.  *shrugs*

California is nice, but travelling cross country can be expensive for a short holiday.  I still say there needs to be some kind of get together at some point here in the states--specifically South East.  Not anytime soon, mind you, but sometime.

Too bad I didn't catch on to steampunk six months ago or so--I was in DC in January.  I guess I might just have to get back up that way, if that is where the nearest group is.

There do appear to be a few people from the general DC metro area.  (I'm stretching the term "metro area" quite wide, in my own case.) There is no "Steampunk scene" that I know of, just the occasional goggle-wearer, looking at the old buildings    (Plenty of Civil War re-enactors, though)

It isn't heavily-used, but our dear Tinkergirl has created a Steampunk World Map at Frappr, linked from her Brass Goggles blog  http://www.brassgoggles.co.uk/brassgoggles/?page_id=276 where interested persons may post their general location information, and see if there are others nearby.

I have to count myself as one of those Civil War reenactors, but also of many other eras, past and future 
Though we have no organized local group, I find this board a useful too to keep an eye out for others who might want to gather at local conventions, and i'm glad that i finally found it!

Everyone follows a path of learning, and anyone who would be scornful of you for not having been aware of its existence previously is most probably a clod. Speaking only for myself, i'm of the opinion that the musical output of Muscle Shoals lends a particular value to Alabama.

Though i'm a Tennessean by heritage, i make my home in the North Carolina piedmont. (Granted, i'm currently on sabbatical in Utah, but only for a couple months.)

I meant only in jest, but as a Tennessean you should quite be aware of the monikers normally associated with us poor and gentle Alabamians.  Granted, I do not share many of the sympathies of my geographical fellows, there are certain aspects of the place to be, daresay, enjoyed.  Again though, I meant only to lighten the mood--playing fun at Alabama's expense is normally the best way to breech the stereotypes associated with the place. 

And it is, of course, a pleasure to meet one from so near a place.

I have two homes right now, as it were... I'm going to school in Charleston, SC and am originally from Columbia, but this summer I am living in Atlanta, GA... so I always feel conflicted when people ask where I'm from. Is Charleston/Atlanta a valid answer? Heheh, anyway, I shall definitely be in attendance at Dragon*con this year and I look forward to possibly seeing you there!

I'm not too far off. I haven't been to NOLA since the hurricane, and I can barely remember the French Quarter. Were there any steampunkish shops there? It seems like the perfect hangout for antiquities.
