Well, this is my first post in the forums here, but I just wanted to say it's nice to see there are so many people down here in the southeast. I'm in Augusta, Georgia. Unfortunately, I don't know a single other person into this kinda stuff 'round here.

I have taken on a new job and will be moving into my first house (my spouse and I have been apartmenting for two decades and have decided to take the plunge) around New Year's, but I will do my best to come January 26th!

Welcome one and all new comers...while I am based in the state of Tx, the steamers around here are few and far between. Right now there is a plan for a gathering in Atl, GA come Jan. 26th...

I just found out that I have an improv show the night of January the 26th. Instead of saying I need to call it an early night, I would like to invite you all out to see me be a fool on stage. I will keep you guys posted when I know more, but I'm thinking it could be fun to meet up around noon or so and hang out, then if anyone wants to watch the show or do whatever, after the show I would totally be up for some around the town partying or hanging out. Maybe a cafe that serves alcohol (since there are under-agers that can't get into bars).

I can't act worth shit with a script, but throw me on a stage or turn a camera on me spur of the moment and I will give you something worth a laugh. I'm excited to meet everyone!

Ok, we've got to decide on a location and a time. I'm going to say noon so we can get lunch of some sort.

As far as coffee shops I know of:
Java Monkey
205 E Ponce De Leon Ave # 5, Decatur, GA

Indie Coffee and Books
340 W Ponce De Leon Ave # 100, Decatur, GA

Cafe
210 Peachtree St NW, Atlanta, GA

I was trying to choose somewhere not too expensive and that is not a Starbucks or Caribou Coffee. Any other suggestions more than welcome! Opinions?

I probably will not be attending, as I am no social butterfly and I live nearly 25 miles outside Atlanta. I can, however, offer a place to meet. I met up with some friends there last week who were in town for the holidays.

Its called Octane. They have coffee, tea, beer and wine. They call themselves a coffee bar. It's off marietta street a little ways past Georgia Tech.

That place looks pretty cool. Also, since i get to atlanta maybe twice a year and usually only hang out at my friend's house or Dave & buster's (video games and beer... fookin rawk) I will leave the decision of where to go up to the Baron and others Smiley

And I would love to go to your improv show and laugh my ass off. Then again, an improv show being what it is and all, one might want to watch for the mob (read that: audience) to join in.

Alas and alack, the improv show was moved to Feb. 2, so no comedy show for you guys. I guess we should just get a vote from everyone meeting up... if anyone's even still following this thread or is interested...

As I have said, I will likely not be attending any get together here in atlanta, but may I suggest for those of you still planning, starting a new thread dedicated to said gathering. The title of this thread is more of a check in for SE SP's that a gathering post.

..wow..there are more steampunks in the South East than I could have ever imagined!  I'm brand spanking new around here, you can call me Ash. I'm from GA (West-Central part of the state) and reside in a little bitty town called West Point. Interesting place despite the size, full of completely restored Victorian era buildings and homes, we even have a restored train depot/museum Wink I guess that's the average for an old river city based around textile mills though. Hope to meet some of you in RL at some point Wink

Cross-posted from http://www.brassgoggles.co.uk/bg-forum/index.php?topic=6497.0 due to geographical relevance:

I used to go to DragonCon every 5 years or so, but 2008 will be the first time ever I've gone two years in a row.  The difference?  Steampunk.

I discovered this wonderous genre last year with just enough time to make a costume and some ray guns ala the Weta display from ComicCon'07.  That display struck a chord in my heart as my first fiction addiction was Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars series, and I figured that would be a good answer to the inevitable "what's your costume" questions from folks who knew nothing of steampunk.  However, I was delighted to discover that there were many steamy folk running around.  Some were solo or in twos and threes, and there were at least two crews of 5+.  One group was from Canada, very fun folks whom I greatly enjoyed meeting.  The other group was from the Atlanta area, but I was only fortunate enough to meet a couple of those wonderful folks.  Every single one of them had costumes that would knock your stockings into the next county, if not the next country!  (Before you peruse the evidence presented by the DragonCon photos on my MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/steampunkbuilder, please be certain to tighten your garters!)

One thing that is certain: anyone in steampunk garb couldn't go anywhere at DragonCon without being asked to stop for photos.  If two were walking together the photo requests tripled, and three or more meant that you couldn't walk 10 feet between stops. (I must admit that has an appeal to the long-supressed theatrical "ham" in me.) Its amazing how popular the steampunk aesthetic is, even if people don't know what it's called.

Hopefully this year we can plan more fun stuff-- multiple parties & photo ops at the con, meetups for later... maybe even form a unit for the parade.  Any takers?

I'm new to the steampunk scene, and I live in the quaint town of Pensacola, Florida.  I'd definitely be up for a meetup of some sort.

I'm originally from Pensacola, currently in atlanta though. P'cola is a nice town though. I still have a lot of family down there.

S Florida here.. Broward County. Kinda limited mobility and funds currently so I'm only good for somewhat local stuff unless I have a place to put a sleepingbag for the night. Can't swing Burningman on my own this year so if anyone wants to do a co-op trip out there I have the time for the roadtrip and could swing my end of costs if someone else has a vehicle or bus or zepp. You'd get to see a steam tractor there and the treehouse.
