As those of you present at the Science Museum on Saturday afternoon are aware, the Museum has several sections and replicas of Mr. Babbages curious calculating enginery. Indeed, they have built the Difference Engine to Mr. Babbage's plans with the manufacturing tolerances required, and the engine works perfectly. Accordng to The Ghost of Ada Lovelace, the curators of the computing section are more than happy to open the cabinet and demonstrate the Babbage engine in operation for interested parties. I think we count as an interested party. So, who wants to go to London and see Babbage's Difference Engine in operation?I do! All we need to do is sort out a date... Preferably, one that allows my wallet to recover... Late Summer perhaps? A day at the museum, possibly to coincide with one of the steaming days for Crossness Pumping Station? For me, August 22nd/23rd would be the best weekend: Saturday spent at the museum with a "private" showing of the Babbage Engine, and Sunday to the Steam Day at Crossness. What say you, Steampeople?

This seems Do-able. I would like to see this as I wasn't able to go to the Museum Saturday I think I could save enough for a proper hotel and so on this time. But how would we all get to Crossness? Frankly considering the cock up I had getting to the pub I am understandably wary of travelling to crossness and getting back! Would we all meet at a designated train station/bus stop ect and travel together?

I was thinking about hiring a minibus from somewhere central and easy to get to (King's Cross, possibly?) to take us out to Crossness and back again. From past experience, assuming there's about 15 of us, this would probably cost you around £3 - £4.

So far, so good - I reckon we need at least a dozen or so of us to make this viable, so get yer names down, stokers! Get enough of us together, and I reckon we could afford to hire a vintage bus / coach...

Certainly. I'm sure some of the people not present Saturday would enjoy meeting ms. Lovelace. But if we're going to convene there, why not organise some other activity(ies) too? Another meal, or just a good old trip to the pub?

Count me and my Lady to come down from Glasgow again. I do not work over the summer, so can make it there in good time for this one.
I'm agreed that we should plan other events in conjunction, but perhaps that's only the length of my travel talking.

There's our 20! I can chase up my initial communications with the Museum and Papplewick now...
I've located a couple of local vintage bus hire companies which I shall obtain quotations from for the Crossness Trip on Sunday 23rd August. They have lovely vintage vehicles (OK, more dieselpunk than steampunk, but at least we arrive in style!) with capacities of 26 and 31 respectively, so I think those are our two "cut off points" for that part of the weekend. I'll let you know how much ASAP so we can decide if we want to go down the vintage or modern hire route!

Oh, how exciting! I regularly attend meet-ups of another website and have for a couple of years now, but have to admit that brassgoggles members definitely know how to meet in style.

FOODThe Crossness website says there will be "light refreshments" available: However, I have a feeling that coping simultaneously with 20+ polite but demanding steampunks for lunch might be tricky for them. I'm looking around the area for pub / restaurant ideas. Many of the local pubs seem to be modern (post-1950) and sadly cask-ale free. I've found an African/Carribean restaurant about 10 - 15mins away from Crossness ( www.marblerestaurant.co.uk). Interested? An unusual Sunday lunch, admittedly, but... well, we are unusual. I love Carribean food, but haven't had any since I stopped working with my old (1st Gen West Indies) boss about five years ago. I miss it! There's also a couple of local Indian / Tandoori restaurants. Sticking with more "indigenous" food, there's also the Prince Albert Victorian Restaurant, about 20 - 25 mins from Crossness, which sounds lovely: £14.95 for a three-course Sunday lunch is fairly well priced for London. And of course, seeing as we're going to see "The Prince Consort" engine in steam, visiting his pub might be nice, too! It's owned by Shepherd Neame, too, so there will be nice ales on! Plus, they have one of the the largest private brass and copperware collections in Britain. Your thoughts?
