Greetings to all!

In my travels I've uncovered a rather voluminous collection of Icons, eminently suitable for customising one's own personal computational engine.  I don't know if a link has been posted here or not; if one has, then you have my profound apologies.

712 (!!) Windows Icons here: http://samantha-wright.deviantart.com/art/Library-Icons-2nd-Ed-Windows-101728317

730 (!!!) OSX Leopard Icons here: http://samantha-wright.deviantart.com/art/Library-Icons-2nd-Ed-Leopard-109866071

A final word for the faint-of-heart: these are massive collections, and not for those who access the aetheric tubes by dialing through a telephonic line with a 56K MOdulator/DEModulator.

They are ico files and can be converted using gimp (slow) or a script (haven't had time to figure that one out yet  Sad )

If you peruse the artist's DeviantArt page, they also offer them in .PNG files, which will work fine for *nix flavors.

If you have a windows based OS, try grabbing IconPackager

It's free and will let you easily change almost every icon on your PC.

Awfully sorry if this counts as Necromancy, But I'm having trouble using IconPackager to apply these, and I'd love to get them working... How would I input them?

You said computational engine. You sir/madam, are amazing.

Thank you for that. I do enjoy reading odd/eccentric phrasing here and there, and you have just made my day.

Not wanting to repeat myself but this post is directly related:

Some of the steampunk icons I've created and used in Rocketdock, many of these are just work in progress so feel free to borrow:

FTP - This one looks much better when it is a small icon

Shutdown
(If anyone wants to know how to create the guttering flame then just see here:
http://lightquick.co.uk/index.php?option=com_mmsblog&task=show&id=129&Itemid=227)

Thumbwin / Minimize - application to thumbnail your apps on the desktop

Explorer or in my case I use File Explorer2 as one of the Explorer alternatives.

Web HTML Editor (in my case frontpage, could be dreamweaver or similar)

realplayer recorder/player/ripper (winamp or similar)

The same without the recorder for a program manager (Stack Docklet)

More on the same theme - VLC or other player

Control panel

This is the icon I use for the 'evil' MS File explorer, it could be used for anything Microsoft, Windowes (sic) update or possibly Outlook?

Editor (could be notepad, in my case I use the Context editor)

Diary /Journal (Lotus Organiser)

Firewall (Sygate)

Photoshop - Not happy with this one, I use the one below,

Much happier with the camera above...

Opera - the web browser

Difference Engine no.2 - Im not sure what you could use this for...

I use this padlock as the icon for Truecrypt

Firefox (poor, poor thing) - I now use this for the sandboxed version of firefox using sandboxIE.

File Manager (in my case FreeCommander and/or Explorer2)

Internet Explorer

File Explorer ... Doh!

Word Processor, Word, Open Office

Skype

Task Manager

? - you've seen this before but it could be used for something...just added a glass cover to the gauge

another under construction, it is actually the dial from the candlestick phone above

Web browser, the world wide spider spinning the world wide web

Recycle bin (still working on this one)

Control Panel or something. I use it for opening the Computer Administration window thusly:

Target: %SystemRoot%\system32\compmgmt.msc
Start in:%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%
Arguments: /s

Email, on her majesty's service

Yahoo widgets startup

Anti-virus tool

Another anti-virus tool icon, this one is slightly different to the previous.

I am using this one as a replacement for the start button - the image is not particular indicative of its function but what can you replace a start button with if not another start button, so I've gone for something more ethereal. It calls a useful start menu replacement called Jetstart.

I'm working on using this zodiacal image for something else too, forgive the fact that it is rough at the edges. I'm sure someone can find another use for it. I really like this one and in fact I am working on turning it into a widget.

Typewriter with screen  -more dieselpunk this one, I use it as the icon for the program 'console', this provides a transparent 'DOS' window for performing command line tasks that is almost infinitely better than the Windows DOS box.

Basically take your pick... each getting slightly more steampunk

A nice one for your wireless, this one looks much better when shown as an icon.

Goodsync or similar backup/synchronisation tool

For a movieplayer?

Suitable for an images or pictures folder?

I use this for safari - it is a basic untouched alethiometer. I might do something to it later when I have an inspiration,

And this I use as the icon for 'iconoid' a little program for sillysoft that controls the desktop icons, hiding them &c.

Both of these icons look better iconised in smaller versions as the contrast has been enhanced, you are seeing the larger PNG version here.

An icon that could be used for Safari

And again

Photos? War of the worlds Game?

Photos? War of the worlds Game?

I will add them both to the icon set here soon. http://rocketdock.com/addon/icons/38398

Here it is in action:

They are all transparent PNGs images that Rocketdock can easily use. Just right click/save as and copy them into your Rocketdock icons folder. Rocketdock will handle the sizing automatically.

It is really nice to have a set of your own unique icons. I hope you find them useful. Download them here: http://rocketdock.com/addon/icons/38398

and some new ones...

I have been using the Samantha Wright British Library icons for some time, first on my XP machine and now on Windows 7 x64, they are  fantastic, I haven't found anything as Steampunk and as extensive as this collection. On Win 7 I have used "Microangelo on Display" to change/install them.

On XP I used "Icon Tweaker".There is a British Library ita file for "Icon Tweaker" available on Deviant Art which will install most of them all at once, which makes it much easier.

The British Library ita file for "Icon Tweaker", do you have it? or do you know the link to the original? I'd like to try it.

Palmyrin - Thanks for that link, very useful.

I've made a few new icons, steampunk of course. They are now on Pinterest which is a very nice way of displaying steampunk stuff.

What Rocketdock was for, How to download Rocketdock, How to add your icons to Rocketdock and how to change my default icons to something much, MUCH more FUN!

Took me a while to figure it out, with looking up directions for everything, but it worked great.

Thanks for letting me borrow your creativity to enhance my laptop!

Ah, yes, these things are great once you discover them. For the unitiated, RocketDock is the free equivalent of Objectdock and both supply a MAC style visual dock that is very in keeping with the steampunk ethos, ie. you can customise it so you can make it look exactly how you want. If you have a bunch of steampunk icons you simply drop them in an icons folder beneath the rocketdock folder and then you can select each icon and change it to whatever takes your fancy.

There was a guide to steampunking your desktop here http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3217.msg780127.html#msg780127
but it may need updating to make it clearer.

I'm glad you are having fun and learning at the same time.

Maybe you could drop an image of your steampunk'd desktop on that same thread? I am sure we'd love to see it.

This is my icon set on my own desktop using Rocketdock. The image is not that clear but you get the idea.

I have just created some gorgeous new icons for your desktop. Based upon the Eric Gill designs for a new stamp for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924, the icons are decidedly steampunk in their nature but will lend themselves very well to any retro application. The icons are available as PNG files for use in conjunction with dock applications such as Rocketdock, Objectdock, Stardock, Avant Window Manager &c. There are 47 of these icons at the moment and more will come.

I have recreated Eric Gill's penny hal'penny stamp design using Photoshop and have used this as a basis for the collection. I hope to make more stamp denominations based upon Eric Gill's single penny hal'penny stamp design. So expect more here soon. Suitable images are then combined with the stamp to make something that is truly more as a whole than when viewed merely as individual images. We do hope you like them.

These are shown in the smaller thumbnail form but will come in the bigger size PNG so you can download and reduce them in size as required. I will iconise them later to .ico and .icns formats but as PNGs you can do what you want with them.

You can get them here as individual images:

http://rocketdock.com/user/107284/addons/popular

or here as a complete set:

http://rocketdock.com/addon/icons/42504

It would be appreciated if you could go to Rocketdock, log in and download - Once logged in you can leave a star rating for each. It helps to keep steampunk icons at the top of the Rocketdock popular list.

New full bin icon to go with the earlier empty icon.

Get it here http://rocketdock.com/addon/icons/42807

Once again it is really appreciated when you log in at rocketdock and leave a vote. If you look at the popular icons you'll see a few of the steampunk icons are in the 'popular' list. When they get to that position the number of downloads flies upward. When you vote it helps to keep them on the popular list. Thanks and do enjoy the steampunk icons, creating them at a rate of one per day...

Dear Sir,

Your icons are beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!  I never have succeeded in getting through to rocketdock, but I have looked at and been inspired by your work.  (I think my computing engine has no way of acquiring or displaying icons, alas.)  These new ones are spectacular.

Arabella, what a lovely name... especially with the periscope bit.

I am glad you like the icons, a new one every day!

If you have trouble getting rocketdock installed and putting the icons in place then do let me know. I'll be glad to help.
