I'm wondering how many people are still using this thread for local info , or is just about everyone from here on the Ning group now? There's some great events happening in the next month or so & I just think that between BG, the Texas Steampunks Ning group and the Austin Steampunk Society on Facebook, it seems that some events make it on some boards, and others don't.  I'm having trouble finding the events calendar on the Texas Steampunks Ning , any illumination would be helpful!

I was/am still co-maintainer of the Seaholm_steam community on Lj, but since we started it back in '08, lj has pretty much declined in popularity in favor of other social media.  I thought maybe I could just keep it open as a calendar to keep everyone's events listed between the various forums, but was wondering what people preferred as far as organizing/gathering/etc. ?

That being said, I think it's great that so many people in Austin are interested in steampunk.  I just want to make sure no-one misses out on anything.

Any thoughts?

Hi Claire de Lune:

I can't speak for the others, but I'm pretty active on Brassgoggles (probably the most from the bunch), and I usually gravitate here first (although in the General Steampunk segment) when I post about my stuff, and even events here.  JJ started the ning page, and that is turning more and more into the local page and growing very fast for local news (like the last photoshoot at Big Top, for example), but on the other hand, we just had one new member at ning who saw us either at this thread, or at the Texas page here at brassgoggles.  So I kind of regard Brassgoggles as a "magnet" for outsiders to bump into our local fora, since Brassgoggles is so well known (I noticed, Texas Steampunks at Ning is rather difficult to find simply by Googling it on the web...even Seaholm Steam or even my personal web store are easier to find with a simple search!).

If nothing else Myself, JJ and Arvis also are quite regular at posting here, not that we are the "official Brassgoggles-Austin" liaisons if you will ( since we tend to meet somewhat regularly  Roll Eyes ) , but reproducing notices from Ning at this page should be done (but I'll admit I have more or less abandoned Seaholm Steam).

I don't know if any people feel they want to "abandon" this thread (I wouldn't unless no one comments here for a long time), but the problem is "centrality" as some fora are easier to find than others.  I only know Seaholm Steam is giving way to Texas Steampunks rather quickly.

thanks for the input, Mr. Wilhelm.    It's pretty clear not everyone utilizes every forum (I finally acquiesced to Facebook awhile back), still it's encouraging that Austinites are still using this thread.  I've been on BG since '07, so I'm not going anywhere anytime soon.  Just glad to know it's not just me and a bunch of crickets.

Yes, the next meeting is indeed tomorrow.(It had better be. I'll be there with Wolf, Miss Kitty and J.J.. We'd look pretty silly all being there and not holding a meeting.)

Is anyone planning on going to first Thursday?

I saw Trouble Puppet Theater's production of Frankenstein last Sunday and thought more than a few people on the forum might like it
http://www.troublepuppet.com/

Mad science, vicious vines, French Revolutionaries, gratuitous goggles- As performed by PUPPETS!  It's all sorts of fun.
There are 2 weekends(Thurs.-Sun.) left of the performance. Shows have been selling out, so if you're planning on going buy your tickets in advance.

Looks interesting. Is it somewhat inspired by the Japanese Bunraku style of puppet theater, with various puppet operators in the background?

yes, the operators are in the background clad in black, with black face covers that let in just enough light for them to move around stage.  It's a really entertaining show!

So please stop on by and like the facebook page, the more people we have the better information we can get out to all of you!

The Steampunk Bible release! May 1st event at US Arts Authority

Dear Ladies and Esteemed Gentlemen:

I'm writing this news bulletin to inform you about the developments on my early efforts to be counted in the Steampunk Bible.  Rather than give you a litany of details, I'll just say that it all started with my inquiry on getting included in Jeff VanderMeer's Steampunk Bible.  In the end my work was not published in the book, but I was included in the "master Index" of the Steampunk Bible.

Also, I learned of an event that is coming to Austin, related to this publication, and I think I'll let you read the relevant correspondence below.  Suffice it to say that the release of the Steampunk bible is coming with great fanfare to Austin, and there will be a reception / party at 7:00 PM on May 1 at US Arts Authority.  The presence of Steampunks in full garb is requested. Notable personalities in the party include Ms. Chambers, of course as well as Rick Claw, Jess Nevins, and possibly Michael Moorcock.

Location: United States Arts Authority, 2906 Fruth Street (next to Spiderhouse), Austin, TX 78705  (512) 480-9562

Cheers,

J. Wilhelm

Dear Ms. Chambers:      I write to you from our fair City of Austin, in the Republic of Texas, in reference to Mr. VanderMeer's excellent efforts on the creation of the "Steampunk Bible." Among our local and very loosely-knit steampunk circles I go by the name of "J. Wilhelm" (http://community.livejournal.com/seaholm_steam/).           I just wanted to add my small contribution by exposing some of the very beginnings of this movement here in Austin, as there seems to be no slow-down, as some might suggest. Quite to the contrary, the movement is still emergent, and there is a fair amount of interest from people who still don't know about Steampunk and Neo-Victoriana, but are first exposed to this movement. This place is a good snapshot of the "beginning processes," so to speak. So new is the Art in the Austin/San Antonio area, that we are still just barely discovering one another after a year-or-so in the blog circles (e.g. refer to these blog entries: http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1502.375 ) .      For my part, my contribution is limited to the manufacture of "Calculation Engines" (i.e. computers), of which I think that Austin is a natural location for this type of industry (http://www.victoriansteam.baroquestone.com). My devices, are just a meek re-interpretation of the work done by the "steampunk elders," a.k.a. Jake Von Slatt, and Nagy "Datamancer," but the local response to my machines from the public has been positive (in spite of the simplicity of my efforts). My point being that the public is certainly fascinated by this style, provided the right exposure. I look forward to the release of Mr. VanderMeer's Steampunk Bible. Please feel free to contact me or the members at the Seaholm Steam & Diesel blog group if you require any more information

Sincerely, J. "Wilhelm" Dunn    Aeronautical Engineer and Calculation Engine Fabricator

Hi John,    I'm crawling out of the woodwork because The Steampunk Bible is now in its final stages.  It is slated to be released May 1st, and it just so happens I'll be in Austin around that time.  I was wondering if you and the Austin Steampunks would be interested in helping me celebrate its release?  Are there any events going on at that time?  At the moment, I was thinking of having an event at BookPeople, but if you know of any other things steampunk going on, I am open to suggestions.    Looking forward to hopefully meeting you and your crew,    S. J. Chambers

John,         I *finally* have details on this.  The Steampunk Bible will be released May 1st, at the U.S. Arts Authority.  The party begins at 7 pm, and includes Myself, contributors Rick Klaw, Jess Nevins, and possibly Michael Moorcock.   I would love for you and the Austin Steamers (in full garb I hope!) to come out and help me celebrate, and if you'd like to say a few words to the people about what you guys do and what Steampunk means to you, I would love it.  Also, I will make sure to run a feature on you guys on the Steampunk Bible website.         Let me know if you all are available,    S. Herr Wilhelm! This is amazing news! The launch of the Steampunk Bible in Austin is quite a deal, especially if Maestro Michael Moorcock were to actually attend! Thanks so much for posting this. Is it OK to disseminate this announcement throughout the Austin Steam scene?

That would be quite interesting. We'll be in san antonio that weekend, so not much of a hop to get over to Austin.  Hopefully that will work out well enough and we'll get to see a few new faces.

Sounds like a great event!

just to avoid confusion, I'm pretty sure Spider House dropped the USAA name and is now calling it the Spider House 29th street Ballroom- I still think of it as the creepy plasma center. Wink

I'm going to try to make some of it, but while everyone else may be in San Antonio for AetherFest-I've got tickets for Austin Psych Fest that same weekend.  Argh.  I need to clone myself.
