Esteemed Colleagues:

It goes without saying that I vote for Kneaded Pleasures, since I suggested it.  So 5 or 6 O'clock Wednesday?  That should pose no problems for me unless a meteorite decides to crash in Austin.

J. Wilhelm

If a meteorite crashes in Austin, I vote we meet there!

I, unfortunately, have an exam to catch that day.  I'll make it sooner or later, though!

On Wednesday last we had the biggest meetup yet with Rene, Jasmine, Dana and myself in attendance plus two newbies to the group; Andrea and J. Wilhelm.  Dana's Mini-Minion and Andrea's S.O. brought the grand total to eight!

Wilhelm brought along a pair of Steamed computers (VERY nice workmanship!) that attracted considerable interest (and some very positive comments!) from the mundanes at the coffee shop.  (Hopefully, photos will follow?)

Conversation centered mostly on Wilhelm's PCs, welcoming Andrea and Wilhelm to the group and getting acquainted.  And as always, chatting about assorted gadgets and projects with some discussion of photo-op locations when the weather is better.  I'm still holding out for Inner Space Caverns but Dana put forth the rather intriguing concept of staging a Steampunk 'hunt' at a local dinosaur park.

The Kneaded Pleasures Cafe itself was adequate as a 'family friendly' meeting place but, I felt, left a great deal to be desired.  The accoustics of the place were simply awful and produced a constant enervating din.  (I'd hate to be there when it's busy.)  Worst: the latte was somewhere beyond disappointing.  I'd give the place an overall 'OK' for nasty weather and/or when children are present but thus far my preference is Epoch.

Overall, good folks and good conversation more than compensated for the inadequate coffee.

JJ

I hate that I missed yet again. Last week was weird and I was a day off in my thinking. I actually got all the way there before i realized it was Thursday...not Wednesday. Of course then I started thinking that perhaps there was a disturbance in the aether that caused me to shift one full day ahead or to simply loose the day known as Wednesday. I even considered that this phenomenon affected the whole world, since both my lovely wife and I felt the same feeling of a missing day, but seeing as you met, I understand that it was a limited effect...Perhaps the clockworks are plotting against us, trying to keep us from foiling some plan?

Until the next meeting, Take care all.

Oh and since some people have been unable to come out on Wednesday, I would like to put the possibility of an occasional Tuesday or Thursday on the table.

Until we meet again!

The Wednesday meeting thing is mostly the result of Arvis' current work schedule.  He's said it will be changing soon, so...

 Regards:
I made an attempt to  drop in last Wednesday, didn't see any group and or individuals who seemed "steamy". Perhaps on the next occasion I may have more luck , Lumineferous Aether Willing, just to check my facts Wednesdays at Cafe Epoch  north campus area?
Finally is there some sigil or marking of the tables I might look for? As for details and introductions I would prefer to make those in person as I find the Interweb so impersonal.

Last Wednesday's assemblage was at Kneaded Pleasures, so if you visited Epoch you'd have had great difficulty finding us.  ;^}

Sigils... Usually a pair of brass goggles in the center of the table, a column of smoke by day and fire by night, and (until the weather warms) a brown fedora.

At this point no one has set a date or place, but I'd suggest Epoch on next Wednesday at around 6:00.

Anyone else up for it?

Greetings Ladies and Gentlemen:

No, I haven't attended any anime soirees since my college days, Circa 1997.  I kicked that including the "Chasing the Dragon" habit, and the well-known Absinthe... LOL!

This Wednesday (16th) looks like the only opportunity this year.  The rest of December is probably a bit difficult for most folks.

I'd also prefer Epoch Coffee to the other places we've met.

JJ

As an afterthought...  I'm going to show up at Epoch this Wednesday (regardless) and drink a latte or two.

If you show up you get to see my brand new $4 Goodwill waistcoat.  ;^}

Esteemed Colleagues:

Greetings, I have no problem with this meeting date/place , -oh BTW folks, I'm just providing some exposure for our Fair City by giving some information to the "Steampunk Bible" to be published by Jeff VanderMeer; refer to

http://www.jeffvandermeer.com/2009/10/25/seeking-steampunks-for-fun-and-archiving/ and http://www.sjchambers.org/news.html

S. J. Chambers, Master Archivist

                                     December 14, 2009

Dear Ms. Chambers:

I write to you from our fair City of Austin, in the Republic of Texas, in reference to Mr. VanderMeer's excellent efforts on the creation of the "Steampunk Bible."  Among our local and very loosely-knit steampunk circles I go by the name of "J. Wilhelm" (http://community.livejournal.com/seaholm_steam/).

I just wanted to add my small contribution by exposing some of the very beginnings of this movement here in Austin, as there seems to be no slow-down, as some might suggest.  Quite to the contrary, the movement is still emergent, and there is a fair amount of interest from people who still don't know about Steampunk and Neo-Victoriana, but are first exposed to this movement.  This place is a good snapshot of the "beginning processes," so to speak.  So new is the Art in the Austin/San Antonio area, that we are still just barely discovering one another after a year-or-so in the blog circles (e.g. refer to these blog entries: http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1502.375 )

For my part, my contribution is limited to the manufacture of "Calculation Engines" (i.e. computers), of which I think that Austin is a natural location for this type of industry (http://www.victoriansteam.baroquestone.com).  My devices, are just a meek re-interpretation of the work done by the "steampunk elders," a.k.a. Jake Von Slatt, and Nagy "Datamancer," but the local response to my machines from the public has been positive (in spite of the simplicity of my efforts).  My point being that the public is certainly fascinated by this style,  provided the right exposure.

I look forward to the release of Mr. VanderMeer's Steampunk Bible.  Please fee free to contact me or the members at the Seaholm Steam & Diesel blog group if you require any more information.

Sincerely,

J. "Wilhelm" Dunn

I like epoch myself, but it's going to be really cold so I was going to suggest that we go to the Green Muse located on Oltorf and South 1st.
 What do you guys think?

The Green Muse is really quite small so the odds on getting an indoor table would seem very slim if the evening traffic is heavier than Saturday afternoons.

Still, if that's the consensus I'll give it a shot.

I'm okay with whatever, though think my personal vote is for epoch, As with Folderol though, consensus wins.

That is true, but isn't there outdoor patio at least walled? It could help with the wind chill.
If not i'm  still good with epoch. Thought i'd throw that one out there if anyone had any ideas.
