Sounds like a great event!

just to avoid confusion, I'm pretty sure Spider House dropped the USAA name and is now calling it the Spider House 29th street Ballroom- I still think of it as the creepy plasma center. Wink

I'm going to try to make some of it, but while everyone else may be in San Antonio for AetherFest-I've got tickets for Austin Psych Fest that same weekend.  Argh.  I need to clone myself.

I have no clue about the name, I just go by what I was told, since I don't frequent the USAA often!  Grin
I'm also busy looking for a ride to San Antonio for Aetherfest if anyone from Austin plans to come and go in one day.  I definitely have to be back in Austin on Sunday.  I'm afraid my old horseless carriage is no up to the task.

Esteemed colleagues!  If this hasn't been posted yet we should be making a lot more noise about it; the horns are rather quiet on the subject of Steampunk and Soth by Southwest.  Why?  Are we being caught "flat-footed"?

South by Southwest Music Festival (SXSW) in Austin TX March 9-18, 2012

At least one thing I've found out so far.  And I'm sure there's more if you look.  Sadly the Texassteampunks.ning.com site is silent about any March events.  Moderator?

Ladies and Gentlemen:

*ahem*

While I figure out a way to feneagle myself into one of those "interactive" SXSW events (which may or may not happen depending on my charm and wit (I'm doooomed!) *ahem* I can give you a very partial list of free events at SXSW (see spoiler below), some of which will be of interest to us. The non-music events like talks and such tend to take place this first weekend, or immediately thereafter, and the music concentrated toward the second half of the week. I have skipped over most of the music events on account there are too many to list (yes free events at bars/nightclubs and some and in open places -including Stubbs!).

For a more complete search (will give you all the music venues), you can find most of them (although I realize not all be listed) by clicking this link, which already has the search term "free" embedded into the search query:

http://austin2012.sched.org/?s=free&iframe=no

and this extra list: http://sxsw.com/free

If any one has an idea on how to stow away into one of the two Steampunk talks, I'm open to suggestions.  I will try to contact people directly.  I'm surprised that SP has not been featured more prominently this year.

Cheers,

J. Wilhelm

Hello,

I've just discovered steam punk and this website is really confusing, but anyway I don't live in a big town. . . I live In Snyder, TX, near Abilene, TX. I'm probably all alone out here. I'm just wondering if there is any steampunks, at all near me?. . .I'm so exited about steampunk and all, but there is nobody else that I know of

Wow, you are pretty isolated. Unfortunately your not alone in your loneliness. Texas being the bigass state that it is spreads us far and wide. I too am originally from a small town and had I not moved to Austin I probably never would have even found out about Steampunk.(or at least met others like myself)
The group I meet with meets up every two weeks at a coffeehouse and we have had pretty much the same schedule for the past three years. One of our members lives a little more than an hour away.(quite a drive for a meet up)
Give yourself time and don't get discouraged. Look for Victorian reenactors in your area. (Typically "civil war" or "old west" reenactors)
Folks with similar interest may be closer than you think and like you, just haven't heard of Steampunk yet. Being in a "small town" you might wanna hold off on getting your brass goggles together and running down to the corner store for milk and eggs in a top-hat and waistcoat.(you'd be amazed how many idiots there are out there, even the ones you might have considered "friends")
Look for a coffeehouse type location in your area.(preferably 24/7) If you have a "collage hangout" type place that may be a good place to start. Find a community bulletin board and post a link.
You have already headed in the right direction by posting here. (this is exactly how I ended up with the folks I meet with)  Grin
Looks like your between Dallas and Amarillo. Dallas has a huge Steampunk community. I'm sure Amarillo has them too but I don't hear much from them.
You might have slightly better luck on this page.
Hope this helps and I wish you luck in finding fellow Steampunkers in your area!

roo, your best bet is probably Lubbock. There is a group at Texas Tech. https://www.facebook.com/TechSteampunkSociety
...And another in Lubbock  http://www.thesteampunkempire.com/group/lubbocksteampunksociety

Here is another listing from the Dallas/Ft. Worth group http://steampunkis.org/forum/index.php?topic=459.0

Also you don't say how old you are, but you might try looking around the campus at Western Texas College or even try wearing a top hat or bowler down at the Big Apple Deli on the square (I worked in Snyder for about 6 months in 2009). You might attract others like you.

100% agree to go out in your Steampunk finest, or with your latest project, and you will notice others with interest being drawn to you like a moth to the flame.  Worst case you have a few interesting conversations.  Best case eventually you find others and then the real fun can begin.    Best of luck.
