Ok, so the servant girl tour is on july 17th, the same day that Abney Park are playing in Dallas.  Not sure how many of you are going to make the trip up there for that, but it might prevent some people from going on the tour.  So, what does everyone want to do?

Naturally I can't go. Work and stuff. Sad   I hate missing Abney Park too. Angry

(sorry, I'm in a foul mood. I just put together my elaborate photo thingamajig and as I posted it I was timed out of the forum and lost all I had put together)  Cry

I'll try again in the morning when I feel better. In the mean time I'm off to play with my Voodoo dolls.

I wasn't planning on going up to Dallas for the show, as it's a bit far and I leave for vacation just a few days later, but I'm willing to consider other dates, so those who want to go can!

O.K. here we go again!
This has been a real pain in the behonkas for me, but here we goes.  Wink

My son and I scouted out the way back to the steam engine I spotted a few weeks ago. It's fairly easy to find just leave Austin traveling south on highway 71.(about twenty miles)
Along the way (about fifteen miles out) I spotted this place.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's six dollars admission and would probably make for some interesting photo opportunities. We could have a sort of a "time travel" day/hunting trip. Little Alex and myself spent about two hours here before continuing our trek.

After the park it was just a short four or five mile trip to the main destination. A good land mark to show your there is the Bat Mobile.

Hello,
I live in Houston, but this might be of interest to steamfolks in other parts of our state, so The Abiliegh suggested I post this here with a link to the actual article in the Aural-Ocular section:

Is Old-time music Steampunk? Or steamy at all?

Some say yes, others say no.

I'm posting this in Brass Goggles, because
1. I'm a Steampunk, and
2. This is the music I play

This is live acoustic (un-mic'ed --usually) music. It's the sort played by the common folk of not only Texas but in fact practically everywhere in the young USA, back when radios didnt exist yet, phonograph players either weren't invented yet either, or wouldn't survive the overland freight trip, T.V. and cable had not even been thought of, and the only music one had was what one made for one's self. Most of pour people play Mountain dulcimers, but a growing number also play banjo, fife, neo-Irish flute (like me, all three), guitar, string bass, fiddle, and hammer dulcimer

Also, many of our plays are performed in Period costume, so We SteamFolks would probably fit right in, or at least only stick out slightly (albeit the era aimed for is earlier than Victorian thru American 1914 or so)

NOTE: the Event at Cypress Top on July 11 is a Costumed Event. follow the link above if interested.

Shameless bump!

Also, my dearest Texas Victorians, please do post here so that we can at least weave a web of steampunkery and victoriana throughout Texas and keep in touch about the various events in our fair republic!

Life should settle down for me in the next few weeks, so here is hoping I'll be around more. And y'all had better believe i'll be posting info for my housewarming party Smiley

Yay! Steampunk in Austin! *says the utter n00b*

never done steampunk in my life, but I wanna, and I'm in Austin

Anybody have a better idea than my husband and myself showing up dressed in getups of our own creation at, say, the Poe exhibit and hoping we aren't rounded up for the loony bin? LOL

First, welcome! It's nice to see another Steamy face in the area.

I tend to wear my steampunk gear when going out dancing, and occasionally out and about town for no reason what so ever. The nice thing about Austin is we are *hardly* the weirdest thing people have seen Wink

I love to meet new people, so any time you want to schedule something, let me know! I'll be officially in austin this weekend, so i'll be available for more than just weekend jaunts to the club!

Sounds great.  I  do my best to make it, although I'll be working at The Austin Celtic Festival all day.  If you get any free time in Austin you should make a trip to Uncommon Objects, Big Top Candy Shop, and the Cathedral of Junk.

Thanks for the tips. We should be in town from Nov 3rd - the 7th. We're actually trying to find cheap (but not poor quality) lodging for those days, as the venue can only get us one room for the night of the show.

There's a ton of stuff going on in Austin the weekend of the 7-8, so make your reservations as soon as you can.  It's a home game for UT on the 7th so be prepared to be enveloped in a sea of burnt orange.  The celtic Festival is Saturday and Sunday at Fiesta Gardens, The 18th annual Austin PowWow is the 7th, and FunFunFun Fest will be also be going on the 7th&8th(I'd love to see Broadcast and Mission of Burma-but probably won't make it).

FWIW, the airport isn't even in Austin, so if you're driving you might want to book a room a little closer to town.(I-35 can be a bit of a death trap)
