Anyone around these forums reside in Austin, Texas?

Even if there isn't, I'll contribute by mentioning my favorite steampunkesque locales in and around Austin.

Best Steampunk Bar -- Betsy Bar.  If you haven't checked this out, you should.  Very "Firefly" in it's appeal -- Old West meets the apocolypse.   (complete with tabletop Atari games and a very good selectiong of tunes) http://www.betsysbaraustin.com/

Best Shopping -- I've found tin googles, canes, top hats, and sextents at the Antique Mall right by Playland Skate Center in north Austin (just south of 183 off of McCann).
http://www.antiquetexas.com/

Another good resource is the Western Wear shops -- I bought a nice men's victorian vest at Cavender's recently.

I've also been meaning to check out Banana Bay Trading Company
http://www.camonow.com/

Best Band -- hmm...  steampunk bands are kind of hard to come by, but White Ghost Shivers played at the SXSW/EFF SteamPunk party.
http://www.whiteghostshivers.com/

Here's the list of (local,  I think) entertainers from the SXSW/EFF SteamPunk Party:
Featured musicians:
White Ghost Shivers
Luna Tart

Vaudeville performers:
St. Idiot's Collective
Popsy Purvy
Schave and Reilley

Modern Marvels Exhibits:
Interactive robotics by Austin Robot Group
Steampunk drawings by Jennifer Fabian
Installations by Steve Brudniak
Time Machine by Garreth Wilcox
Tesla Coil by Justin Sane

Thanks!

I an not from Austin but San Antonio,  I am new to Steampunk, sorta I have always loved steampunk things yet never knew, until my love for Star Wars led me to find some amazing steampunk SW pictures and to the lightsabers people have created.
Any other San Antonio steampunks out there ?

Funny that you should mention Austin, Texas right about now.  I will be spending next week there, and would not mind getting together with other steampunks in the area some evening next week for tea, if anyone down there would be amenable to such a thing.

So when I was wondering the city the other day with my good friend ender (also a new member to the forum/steampunk in general), we wandered into the antique mall to take a look and see if there was anything worth getting.  Sadly, we found nothing, but I am sure the inventory available fluctuates rather frequently.

CLOCKWORK MAN - A Steampunk Ball

Celebrating 10 Years of DJ Void!

Also featuring DJs Nihil and the Gothfather.

Gothic, Industrial, Synthpop & Eurodance

Cyber-esque Neo-Victorian attire is encouraged.

705 Red River, Austin, Texas 78701

Time: 9.30PM

Hopefully most of you will know about tonight already...but it's not too late to head down, as I post this...it's only because a good friend of mine in Austin is attending, that I know about the event.

I am unfortunately located in Altus, OK currently, but was born and raised in Austin. Unfortunately I missed the Elysium Ball, but plan on coming to Austin at the end of May to meet up with friends and fellow 'Punk enthusiasts.

Possibly a small get together the last weekend in May?

Small world. I'm from Austin, and just recently (almost 2 years ago, now) re-located to Vernon, Texas. Yeah, it figures that the Austin area would be where the steampunk movement in Texas was based. God, I miss the Hill Country.

Are you all still wandering about? Was there ever or ever shall there be a semi-official gathering in the Austin area?
If there is, please direct me. If there indeed is not, we should institute one.
While I am new to the scene, I would be thrilled to help arrange a small affair.
Perhaps an impromptu tea or a simple social congress?

Meanwhile, let us have a sip of tea. The afternoon glow is brightening the bamboos, the fountains are bubbling with delight, the soughing of the pines is heard in our kettle. Let us dream of evanescence, and linger in the beautiful foolishness of things.

I at least am still alive and kicking, if caught up in school.  To my knowledge there has not been any sort of gathering, but it would be a pleasure for one to happen.

Sara, thanks for posting. I am in the Austin area so the links are appreciated. I'm trying to get together some outfits and create a character for a Burning Man related event that is happening this month in the area. It's by advance ticket purchase, and the tickets are sold out. The steampunk part of the event is the "Combustible Medicine Show."

I've been to countless goth clubs in other cities, but I am unsure as to what is considered steampunk music?
