This is a spinnoff from the Port Thread. Conversation there turned to a chance to enjoy a formal dinner and copious amounts of port. I therefore propose the following:

English Heritage have a property Witley Court in Worcestershire. "A hundred years ago, Witley Court was one of England's great country houses, hosting many extravagant parties. Today it is a spectacular ruin, the result of a disastrous fire in 1937."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the grounds of this fine pile there is a holiday cottage which has three double bedrooms and one twin room.  The cottage is not really Victorian but having stayed in an EH cottage before I can say they are very comfortable and well appointed. It also has its own gardens etc and staying in the cottage grants access to the property after normal hours - this is a perfect opportunity for photos etc if anyone is interested.

The proposal is that we rent this cottage for the minimum period of three days over the weekend of Friday 27th March to Monday 29th.
We can then hold a house party and most importantly a fine Victorian dinner on Saturday night with plenty of port and possibly such fine delciacies as kedgeree and devilled kidneys for breakfast too.  We could also enjoy a costumed promenade and maybe even a picnic or barbecue (there is one in the cottage garden) on Sunday.   We may be able to have a few additional guests other than the eight residents for portions of this weekend of gentile distraction.

The cost to hire the cottage (which is currently available) is £416 and I think a budget of £144 should cover food and wine (and importantly port).  This is the none too princely sum of £70 per person for a three night weekend - thats £23.30 per night!!

So is anyone interested?  I can reserve the cottage in the morning which will hold it for seven days but people will have to be decent over this and not procrastinate or change their mind.

Lady Elsie and I are happy to be the first two on the list. Anyone else?

BTW Lady Elsie is well known for her culinary expertise having appeared on TV as a period food specialist and I am no slouch in the gastronomic department either.

Capital idea, old chap- CAPIATAL!

Smiley

EDIT; [slaps forehed] WITLEY COURT! I've friends in Malvern, and we took a an afternoon there the year before last, let me second the recommendation of this house- it's now a stabilised ruin, but that's all part of the charm!

Sadly the wife and I have other arrangements on that particular weekend, including costuming 'work' at Memorabilia in Birmingham and an evening of burlesque entertainment in Nottingham.

However, we would be more than interested if this were to be repeated at some point in the future.

It's a shame you folks can't join us.  I will look at additional dates later if this weekend works.

Looks like still one double room and one twin room left...

Also the possibility of people arranging to visit for a day visit - promenade, picnic?

What-Ho! TT- is this still occuring? I only ask as I have been informed that I will very probably be in Newcastle on business that week/weekend, and as such, will not now be able to attend...
