I just saw an ad for these on tv. I wonder if they could be useful for getting that gibson girl look without all the teasing. http://bighappiehair.com/I know most of the models seem to be doing that ab fab beehive thing, but I do wonder.

The advert makes me want to rip my face off, but as a life-long "flattie" I may be tempted to give them a try. (NB Camile Clifford is a style icon.)

I've never liked those 'bump' styles in anything but the Gibson Girl hairstyle. I've never had enough hair to do it, but this might actually be useful for getting the 'oomph' sort of volume that the style has. Here's a page with a how to. http://intimelyfashion.com/hair/gibson2.htmAnd just slip the bumpit thing in there somewhere, and it might turn out pretty well.

I foresee a weekend of playing with my hair, I have always wondered how to do period styles..although it seems that I already do teh Edwardian Twists mentioned elsewher on that site, taught to me by an American friend of the family. You can also use hair rats to fill out a big hair style. Hair rats are what was used for those 40's hair styles that have the rolls of hair on the sides.

If only I had long hair I would be upstairs attempting an updo right now. I love the gibson girl style but my hair is more of the twenties flapper (a short bob) and will probably always be short.

what happened to the old school way to style your hair like that? Teasing your hair is so much fun! Those bumpits look painful.. and I'd always be worrying if they would become visable I could see maybe trying the lil bumpits.. for the bangs. I like that sorta rockabilly bump. But I could totally see those used for the gibson hair I wish I could try that style!

Even when I had long hair teasing wouldn't give volume. My hair is way to soft. Would have loved to do a Gibson Girl bun.

Bumpits!
It's supposed to be a contraction of 'Bump It', right?
I can't help reading 'Bum Pit'.

Yeah, me too.
For a long time, I preferred my hair almost lesbian-chic short. I never really had to take care of it. It's longer now than it has ever been able to grow before, so I usually just pull it into a low ponytail and go from there. I'm almost long enough for a small bun, but I'll have to hold it up with a stick. My hair can't hold bobby pins for anything.

Oh Dear, the product name lends itself to so many bad jokes. I remember seeing something very similar in a batch of vintage 1960's hairstyling magazines a friend gave me. If I need high hair for something, I use a pad of fake hair close to my own colour. I've gotten some pretty big Gibson Girl styles that way.

There are all sorts of easy ways to make your hair do that - the foamy parts of soft curlers, cheap fake hair rolled into hair nets, do-it-yourself hair rats (just keep the hair your clean from your brush and make rolls out of it), buy a wig...
Or do what I do, keep your hair short and don't worry about it. I like my flapper bob. I'm all about low maintenance.

..Whoa. That commercial made me want to throw up a little. But some of the hairstyles were kind of cute, at least the less extreme ones. Still. Whoa.

My hair is too wavy to do much with. I normally drag it into a ponytail and leave it. But since I have to wear a uniform a lot, I've had to pull it into a fairly high bun a lot lately, and it isn't that hard.
But my hair will never allow hair rats or a "bumpit" in. My hair has a mind of its own, and it's very temperamental. As long as I leave my hair alone, It's generally content.

Why, thankyou Salieri. My hair is so thick that I can shape it rather easily. Sometimes it ends up resembling melting soft serve icecream at the end of the day. I suppose that's what strategically placed hairpins and hairspray are for.

You can really pull that look off. I came across some Victorian photos somewhere out there on the net and you would blend right in with that updo. I only wish I could achieve that style. -Georgia
