...For every act that makes one feel that the human race doesn't deserve to survive, we are in equal messure supplied with another reason why that extinction would be a crying shame.
Nothing quite like seeing an artisan at work to restore ya faith in the human race.
What he said. I'm also a new member due to someone sending me a link to datamancer.net, and from there to this site. Incredible work, and quite a restorative to my faith in the human beastie. My taste runs a bit post-victorian, and I'd like keys in sandstone, and in a layout not designed to make one type slowly (QWERTY). I've been dreaming about building my own keyboard for years, and just got a big kick in the pants... many thanks...

You almost have me conviced that Victorians used laptops. I mean, those cogs actually look like they might do something....

I was thinking of the same thing for my mp3 player. I want to get hold of an old pair of radio operators headphones and integrate modern speakers into them, however such a thing is not easy to come by unless you really look. I once found a wonderful scrap place on my travels to Devon, however I was unable to take advantage of it. I would love to try to go again one day. *sigh*
I lack technical expertise, so my modifications are down to asthetics I am afraid, but I hope to have somewhat of a better understanding of things like Tesla technology, and perhaps a few things inspired by Robert Rankin's 'The Witches of Chiswick' (which I recommend, wonderful book). I do go to steam rallys every now and then and one can pick up a fair bit, if one is willing to haggle, or pay ludicrous prices of the jumble sellers.
I wouldn't min'd getting hold of a laptop myself, but due to lack of funds this is currently impossible. Also, I would probably make an external case that it could be placed in, and taken out of, as I would fear losing the warranty, and this is probably the only way I could do it.

Looks like you got slashdotted. Congratulations, well, sort of!. It doesn't look like your server survived the experience. I've had my servers (work, not personal) slashdotted a few times; one time we were averaging 150Mb/s for about six hours straight. Good job I wasn't paying for the bandwidth. - Fzz

I went in there and did some quick hacks to lighten the load. The page is sort of limping along right now, but it's up. You may have to refresh the page a few times to get to it. Thanks for the Gizmodo links too. I just got around to reading through the comments a minute ago. -~D~-

Such is the price of fame! Where else but "The WEB" can one inspired individual create so much enjoyment and envy. I applaud your skills once again. Enjoy the well earned fame. Beautiful work.

When I first posted my brother's Steampunk Lightsaber, it crashed Stardestroyer.net, and then again 3 months later when it got slashdotted. Good for you for riding it out.

found this site for feet--$18 for four. http://www.horton-brasses.com/products/clockboxmirror/189New member here. Been a Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs fan forever. Loved stuff like this. Never knew it had a name. Mentioned it the other day. Of course, my 16-year-old said, "Steampunk. Well, yeah. Duh!" Guess I'm getting old Love the laptop. Inspired me to start work on a "laptop box" for my 1880s style study to hide my hideously modern Inspiron E1705. No cogs under glass, no brass borders (yet). I have to be able to get my laptop out to haul around for work. But just having a music/jewelry/cigar box to put it in on the desk (and use while it's in there) will be a great step forward for me. I'll post pix as it gets closer. Made bottom box and top box (lid) today. Sanded and stained. Waiting for it to dry. What I really want is to make one of the steampunk keyboards and flat monitors to use at work (I teach English at a ... imagine this... technical college). Would that be too cool or what? But first just the little box...

congrats on that fine piece of art, it's exquisite. After checking the thread I haven't found any suggestions for a suitable theme, may I suggest Enlightenment DR17 (currently under development) with the steampunk theme for your linux, it should fit like a (velvet) glove http://bp3.blogger.com/_YrbNc9WBBBc/SGV6hmS65ZI/AAAAAAAAAiA/0fpT9OPr0UI/s1600-h/Screenshot.png

How do you achieve the copper effect on the keys and touch pad? Mind boggling, that.

Sir, this marvelous contraption leaves me nearly speechless. Obviously, were I actually speechless, you wouldn't be reading this. I simply must know: would you mod another computer on commission? I already realize this would be phenomenally expensive, but I love what you've done so much, I just had to ask.
Thank you, Lady Anita

Thanks! I've been here since the beginning of the forum, but you may not have seen much of me lately. I'm a real live "working artist" now, so I've been spending a lot of time out in the workshop and don't get as much time to wander the 'net as I'd like. I still pop in every now and again though. Hi, everyone!

Greetings - although I have been reading Steampunk as part of my Sci Fi regimen for many years, I only just realized it's an actual organized genre and community and began delving deeper.
Your Laptop is truly a work of art; I'd say worthy of a museum except that I feel it would be a shame if it were never used.
One question if I may, admittedly an amateur one since I'm new to all this - I noticed that instead of just settling a complete laptop into a wooden case, you actually removed the original laptop case and mounted the innards. Given the higher insulating properties of wood, did you have any cooling issues, or find the need to mount an additional cooling fan?
Thanks!
