Caz, I too am very interested! Please share the "how" part of your work on the telegraphic key mouse. I have a small collection of telegraph keys (only four), but three are identical and I wouldn't mind sacrificing one or two on the alter of progress. Any help greatly appreciated.

The main QWERTY keys are scrapbooking alphabet charms. What sort of glue did you use to attatch them? I am working on a similar project. I will post pictures when I have something not ugly to show.

Helloha everyone, I'm finally getting around to finishing the page for the laptop. This should be 'officially' hitting the site in a few days, but I figured I'd give you all a preview considering you've all watched it come into being and contributed to its creation in many ways. Standard requests apply...please don't blog it or Digg it or anything just yet. http://www.datamancer.net/steampunklaptop/steampunklaptop.htmThanks, -~D~-

The quill holder is a nice touch! Have you though about converting it into a capacitive stylus, enabling it to be used on the touchpad? I'm not entirely sure what would be involved in doing such a thing, but it is possible. They used to sell touchpad styli in the MCM or Jameco catalog, but I can't seem to find them anywhere now. According to
, a AA battery works--so I believe any bit of metal with a similar footprint will work as well...

Thanks! Not for this particular mod, but I do have a project planned out that uses a similar concept. It's sort of a combination of 3 or 4 different projects I've hinted around about recently. I'm sure my own research will uncover the mystery behind it and also the 'powered stylus'-type setup (like the wacoms use). I'll keep you posted if you're interested. I know you got into capacitive touchpads pretty heavily a while back. I might have to pick your brain about a few things too, if you don't mind.

Oh no, I think you're pulling a von Slatt! If this mystery project is what I think it is, I've been putzing around with the same idea waiting for the funds to do it properly... In which case, I'd actually rather you didn't keep me informed so as to prevent intellectual cross contamination Do feel free to pick my brain about capacitive sensing, however, as it likely won't use such things on my device.

Truely magnificent!.
I'm not sure whether I like it closed (with all that fantastic cog design) or open more! in fact I'd prolly have to get another laptop so I could just put that one on display!....

Thanks everyone!
Yeah, I put a link to this thread at the bottom of the Laptop page and it's been getting tons of traffic. I figured this thread had acted as a sort of "build log" for the project so it was only fitting.

Hi everyone. Had to register in order to say WOW. love it. I have spent the last 5 hours reading everything on the datamancer.com site. Very impressed. A real renaissance man. The Laptop is very nice. When I first the saw the Quill pen I though you had worked it into a pointing device. Sort of like a joystick. the quill would stay fixed in the ink well and you just sort of move it around like an old Atari joystick. Just a question I see that you do cover some of the keyboard cables with a rubber, but has you given anythough to Cloth covered cables? Like you would see on an old toaster http://www.patented-antiques.com/images/WEB-Sale-Cats/Kitchen%20web%20sale/Kitchen%20Written/toast/toaster1b.jpg ... I wonder if there is a simple cloth shell that can be slipped over the existing cable... maybe someone knows of them. Anyways. Keep of the amazing work. I look forward to seeing more. Thanks

There is such a thing, but it's not really fabric as such, but rather a woven plastic-fiber tube used in PC casemodding to keep wires and cables under control.
Truely beautiful work Datamancer. You have absolutely inspired many, both on and off this board.

Thanks Hey there, Thanks! I'm glad you like my work. Welcome to the forums! Thanks for the suggestions. I do offer cloth as an option, but I just haven't used it yet on a keyboard. Bootlaces are a nice, cheap solution for faking cloth wires. You cut the aglets off (the plastic sleeve thingies on the ends) and you have yourself a cloth tube. Slip the wire in there, solder the connector back onto the end, put a piece of shrink tubing on the ends and voila! Cloth wire. -~D~-

I must say, I'm truly envious of your skill. Now, I've decided to learn how to manipulate materials to make something that will be, at best, a fraction of the coolness in that laptop. Luckily, a fraction of cool is still extremely cool
