Well I hadn't heard of any of them and they all look good. But I think Agnosia might be most my cup of tea, although the trailers rather brief. I do love the quirky stuff and animation in general of course. But I'm really looking out for serious dark Steampunky stuff right now, which is bound to come from Europe.  |

Well, I know I haven't read this whole thread yet, but I checked the OP and have been backwards through 4 pages of posts, and have not yet seen any mention of John Carter (of Mars). Yes, I just dredged this thread out of the pits, shook it out, and put it back on display with my own thoughts on Pixar/Disney's upcoming production of Edgar Rice Burrough's classic Barsoom series, but I thought it would be good to add John Carter to the list here as well. The cinematic trailer is due out on 14 July. I can't wait!
Has anyone put up the tv show warehouse 13, it firmly has at least one foot in steampunk.
Well, not in a "movies" thread (that I can recall), but there are a few "Warehouse 13" threads about.  I think of it as sort of "post steampunk", which is to say there had been an actual steampunk period circa the Victorian Era and the show takes place in the world that came after. I'm a big fan of Warehouse 13 too, and I see that they are soon releasing a spin-off series which features the steampunk female H.G. Wells.
Also, I'm not sure that a web series counts as a "movie", as such, but Mantecoza looks like it should be very interesting. |

Admittedly not a Steampunk movie per se but yesterday I was watching the 1932 Boris Karloff film ' The Mask Of Fu Manchu'. Chock full of decent chaps in pith helmets (and a Political In-correctness scale that goes up to 11). But Fu Manchu's laboratory has some great steamy looking equipment with big Tesla like contraptions that give off huge electrical charges and that 'must have' item of all tyrannical bad guys..A Death Ray   |

Speaking of "Steampunk Adjacent," I saw Midnight in Paris Today. A film written and directed by Woody Allen, it has a foray into La Belle Époche. Spoiler below: There is a whole time travel phenomenon that has the main character (Owen Wilson) going around Paris in the Twenties and later the 1890's with all of the attendant artists of each period. A little odd and a little too cute, but has some good shots of Paris and some funny Woody takes on the times with a great cast of cameo actors. |

I havent seen the 'new' (2002) Time Machine does anyone know if its any good in comparison to the original? Also I agree that City Of Ember should be on there. It's suited for a relatively young audience I think (teen?) but I thought it was great :-) x

Just a speculation on my part. A human (or what appears to be so) with an alien technology laser cannon built into his left arm effectively making him a cyborg, reminded me a lot of "Shadow Run". And if that isn't cyberpunk then I guess I'm not sure as to what cyberpunk actually is. I mean really, If Steampunk can be set in practically any time frame as so many people claim,(from ancient Greece to post apocalyptic dystopia) then what prevents cyberpunk from taking the same avenue? When you think about it, if you believe in aliens and their ability to travel through time as well as space then something like "Cowboys and Aliens" could be considered dare I say..... * say it! say it!* ... feasible? (sorry for my tardiness in responding) I have yet to get a chance to see the movie, (need a baby sitter) but based on the trailer it strikes me as having a cyberpunk flavor as it were. Much of my interest, and thus these sorts of questions, comes from attempting to determine what elements would move a film into the category of "steampunk movie" (or cyberpunk or whatever). For me it all depends on the art style and alleged "back story" of a given device/prop in a story/movie. Take this wrist canon implant for instance. Does it look like it was or could have been made by anyone "from" this planet in the given time frame? In my firm opinion "no". OK. Now let's take a look at Ash's medieval robotic prosthetic in the "Army of Darkness". Yes, it's a robotic hand but is it "cyberpunk"? eeee....I teeter towards a "no". It's "steamy" with no electronics, lasers, lighting... etc. But is it "Steampunk"? Hard to say. This is where some folks would like to split hairs. Call it "clockpunk" or "medievalpunk" what have you. It appears to have no power source. No wind up mechanism or boiler but I could easily see this same sort of prosthetic hand featured in a Steampunk setting. Let's complicate things a bit. Luke Skywalker sports a prosthetic too. And it just happens to be a hand.(go figure) His dad has several. Clearly not "Steampunk" but are they "Cyberpunk"? For the most part they are well hidden and we don't dwell on their presence. I guess you could argue that Vader's suit is an obvious prosthetic and could be considered "cyberpunk" but Luke's hand is a different story. We like to consider him "whole and perfect" and we cover up this imperfection with a realistic hand for vanity sake until it is damaged and then we make due with a black glove. (I think I started rambling.) Is the whole of the Starwars universe "cyberpunk". I think I would have to go with a "yes". We have robots and droids(they are not the same thing) fantastic craft and vehicles, weapons of a technically advanced and unexplainable nature and then we have "Lobot". A human with a cybernetic head mounted doohickey that's about as "cyberpunk" as you can get. Well, I think I have rambled on as far as I need to go with my own opinions. Now I'll leave you good people with a "made for T.V. movie" about a turn of the century gun slinger turned "forensic investigator". Is it "Steampunk"? I hate saying it but not really. (heh, I didn't want to say "no") But it is well worth honorable mention. Some of you "old fogies" out there may remember this one. Hope you enjoy as much as I do. Arvis |
