The animated movie The BoxTrolls will be released in September 2014. Voices by Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette and others, it seems to have a Vicorian-steampunk sensibility.

Okay, technically its not steampunk, but i was just reminded of one of my very favorite movies, 1980's Somewhere in Time. The only reason I mention it is that it really has the same romanticized view that particular time period that a lot of us do.

Soviet steampunk film "Раз, два — горе не беда!" (One, two — the mountain does not matter!)

Created in 1988.
Script and lyrics: Julius Kim
Director: Mikhail Yuzovsky

This is a fun children's movie. In the visual style of the film draws upon the motifs of traditional Russian clay toys.

But it's steampunk. There is a giant robot with guns, self-moving carriage on the steam motion and even hand-held laser with a limited range.

P.S. If someone will watch the film then tell me your impressions.

May I respectfully suggest Cowboys vs Aliens, if it hasn't been already...? It's a terrible movie, but certainly fits the bill... in my humble opinion.

I haven't taken the time to read all of the previous posts, so please forgive any duplications. I would add Somewhere in Time. Among other things, one of my two favourite movie sound tracks. Also delete African queen.

Crimson Peak

Victor Frankenstein

Neither was a hit at the box office, but the sets are some fine Victorian & Edwardian eye candy.

I honestly didnt read all the past posts but  if not included yet I would add The Dark Crystal in the subcategory of medievalpunk.

Hugo fit well enought even if it dose not develop in victorian or edwardian era but  there are automata and the boy literally lives into a clockwork in a train station!

Also The adventurer the curse of the Midas box is even more SP with xix century ambientation and crazy machinery and cool characters.

Finally  A series of misfortunate events (the movie not the netflix series) has some pretty SP details  like the sets.
All of them with exellent plots too ;)

A plus one that isn't really steampunk or anything similar is the movie based on the musical Hello Dolly! Starring Barbra Streisand directed by Gene Kelly one of favotites but i included it here only for the costume design by Irene Sharaff máster of the era dresses who also design in  Titanic and Elizabeth

the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies as Holmes is a Victorian Fighting Nazis in these. ( or thinly disguised Nazis as they were propaganda movies really) you could also add the Fu manchu movies especially the Mask of Fu Manchu 1932, the Blood of Fu manchu 1968, the Castle of Fu manchu 1969 Daughter of the Dragon 1931. The Return of Dr Fu manchu 1930 and the face of Fu manchu 1965. The  thing is with both the novels and the movies is that Fu Manchu uses technology far ahead of its time. another good source for Steam punk are the cliff hanger serials of the 20's 30's 40's as again there was technology ( granted made up but still technology) that did not exist. Then of course there is the Flash Gordon serials Space Rockets and laser guns mixed in with swords and magic? That's steampunk.

Is little late (1920s, perhaps) but The Abominable Dr. Phibes starring Vincent Price, has much of Steampunk - clockwork jazz band, for example, and SP devices in Phibes' lair. Also, one man killed with clockwork murder weapon - very Steampunk, yes?

That's a great movie! The Clockwork Orchestra is amazing.

Ther is also a second one in which Phibes goes into the desert

Brilliant steampunk from China - a mystery thriller with a very steampunk feel, even though it is set in some very long ago, obscure time in ancient China. A beautiful film, great story and exciting adventure.

There are two of these movies they do have some slight Steam punk elements but not in the entire still they are very good and worth a watch

Also perhaps, The Great Race with Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis.

And those Magnificent men in their flying machines even more so the chase on top of the train with Terry Thomas if you watch carefully in the background on the back projection you will see and electric power station go rushing by! A continuity error!

Didn't have time to search all the previous pages so I'm not aware of any comments on Mary Poppins. Loved the movie, but really can't recall anything of a steampunk nature in it. Would loved to be enlightened.

Not a movie, I know, but there doesn't seem to be a thread for shows. Warehouse 13. While not steampunk in the strictest sense, it's practically dripping with the aesthetic. (Also, I couldn't forgive myself if I didn't mention something else that is neither a movie nor technically steampunk: Firefly. Despite it being futuristic sci-fi, the feeling of steampunk is definitely there.)

I've only caught a few episodes of Warehouse 13, but I do think it's a great concept for a programme. As to Steampunk (or at least a Steampunk vibe) on the telly, we've been a little bit spoilt in the UK over the last few weeks with new adaptations of His Dark Materials and The War of the Worlds airing one straight after the other on a Sunday evening.

Yours,
Miranda.

Oh,  'Warehouse13'  is great fun and some of the gadgets are very definitely steampunk influenced. 'Firefly' is more western science fiction than steampunk, I feel, although is none the worse for that.

I enjoyed 'War of the Worlds', and liked the extra dimension they gave the story, but I'm afraid I've given up on 'His Dark Materials'; it just seems to drawn out for me, which is a pity as the books are fantastic.

I respectfully submit that Wonder Woman fits the bill. Set in the approximate time period, mythology and magick, technologies that didn't actually exist at that time... And most importantly... Adventure!

Has anybody mentioned this movie? Though I suspect it's not such a good movie now during the pandemic. And definitely not good for those people who still believe the pandemic is a hoax.
