Yes. 6 years in the making and now there are several sources quoting an August 2012 release date. But the fact that it's got '3D' tagged onto it's title is a bit ominous for thiose of us who have been waiting SO LONG and cannot 'see' in 3D. But, so long as the DVD /Blu Ray is available in 2D I'll be happy to watch it at long last. |

No M'Lady Spire it is not just you. I believe 3D is just another gimmick to convince the easily lead public into believing they are watching something new and worthwhile. When in fact it is covering up bad scripts, poor story and indifferent acting with 'Sparklies'. In fact it's no different to the showman's patter and flash while his accomplice picks your pocket. |

Well I can't help but notice the people who seem mainly keen on this craze are the filmmakers, not the audience. Now I hear they're going all gooey eyed over this 48 frames per second malarkey as opposed to the usual 24. So everything now looks like a nature documentary. I'm starting to wonder if it isn't some sort of elaborate tax dodge.
Yeah we filmed this in 3D so it needed twice the amount of film. We also did it at 48fps, so we had to quadruple the amount. The whole thing cost a billion dollars which we couldn't recoup so we've made no profit and are declaring a huge loss.

I had been working on my own list so that I could put it in a subsidiary thread which could then be updated. But it's a very long list and there's at least 200 Jules Verne influenced movies that would have to be included for a start. Then there's all the H.G. Wells...... And, every time I think the list is complete I become aware of 10 more possible inclusions. Also, I wanted to introduce a 'grading' system for 'Definitely Steampunk / Vaguely Steampunk / What The Hell Makes You Think This Is Steampunk Anyway' but that involves personal opinion and would spark even more endless debate which we already have THIS thread for. So, I gave up. I'm a quitter. There. I've said it.  |

The Novels Boneshaker and Mortal Engines are due for Movies. No word on Boneshaker, but Mortal Engine's due end of this year, according to IMDB. Highly unlikely of a 2012 release for ME, but I'm looking forward to both of these movies.  |

Agree. 3D is something if the latest fad to make people go to the movies. 3D does not make a film better, especially if it's a bad film. Like a kidney stove, it will probably pass. Although the transition may be painful. Doc Still calling movies "moving pictures" |

Put "9" on there. It's got giant evil robots and the main characters are referred to as "stitchpunks", what more do you need?
Whew - although I thought this may be more post-apocalyptic, I figured it should at least have been mentioned for the elements/contraptions within - Mad Maudlin had by back. I was watching it this evening. Had to read quite bit into the thread though (searching for "9" does not tend to work so well - bahaha)! I must say though - I have been very surprised at some of the entries - some in a good way - some not so much... Delightful thread though! |

The film "9" to me is more of a post apocalyptic/Dieselpunk flick. Although I remember it being coined "Stitchpunk" by some which I personally do not consider even be a genre. I find that many call the film "Brazil" Steampunk when I think of it as the one film that has far more Dieselpunk elements then Steampunk elements. It is sort of like what Blade Runner is for Cyberpunk. Ok enough of this Punk talk. Punk is dead |

I saw "Hugo" a couple of weeks ago.
The combination of Georges Méliès, Gare Montparnasse and the search for gears and cogs, makes it a wonderful Steampunk movie.
I don't know if the movie derails a lot from Brian Selznick's novel "The Invention of Hugo Cabret", but I loved the movie.

I watched Disney/Pixar's "Brave" a while ago. 3d was okay at first, but ones you get used to it, it doesn't add any value. Also, with fast scenes, the image starts to flicker. Very anoying. For novelty sake they should go back to Black/white and mono sound. And the old special effects like puppetry, stop motion and models. Leave something for the imagination of the viewer. |

I have to disagree with Maets on Cloud Atlas. It certainly improved on the book in terms of making the stories feel more interlinked IMO but the downside was it was harder to draw the exact links, and I think it would have been possible only for the sharpest to pick up on the fact that the stories were linked if it weren't for the actors all being the same in different time periods.
In terms of steampunk content it was minimal.
