I'm sorry to derail the thread, but I can't get over how awesome it is that we have THE Oswald Bastable here in our midst on BG! I remember someone being surprised that VP was represented here, but we're nothing compared to the Eternal Champion! I think I remember watching that many years ago; thought it was rather good but had no idea what it was called in part of the film is a car sabotaged and someone (a dog?) holds the damaged part in place so they can race properly?

Looks as if it could be promising. However, Terry Gilliam has a worrying tendency to be dogged by terrible luck in getting films finished.

The Matrix movies I would add. How so? Don't you think the underground, the colors, the hovercraft (sort of like underground drigibles), the outfits, etc, speak some steampunk to you? Even Trinity running accross the roofs in the opening scene... I dunno, it does to me. :-)

Even Trinity running accross the roofs in the opening scene... I dunno, it does to me. :-) And I respect your opinion on the matter, so please don't mistake this as a challange to your opinion, but rather as an invitation to explore that factors that formed your opinion for the purposes of engaging and discussing for their own entertainment values and better understanding your thoughts on the matter. It seems to me that seeing steampunk in The Matrix is another case of automatically seeing the post apocalyptic as steampunk. To your specific points: Nothing about the underground seemed steampunk (rather more "50's bomb shelter meets warehouse rave"). The colors no more than any other moodily lit film. The hovercraft no more so than the flying cars of Bladerunner (the technology was standard dystopian future sci-fi as was it's decorative style). The outfits were either modern-cut all black leathers or particularly well-groomed homeless. As to Trinity running across rooftops I am especially puzzled as to what steampunk you saw there so I will chalk it up to you having some sort of "gut feeling" and leave that be. Just screams cyberpunk to me personally
To me as well. The setting and the technology (even in Zion) is almost definitivly cyberpunk. Now, that is not to say that a steampunk variation of The Matrix wouldn't be a facinating exploration. It was mentioned in one of the films that different variations had been tried. It is amusing for me to imagine that one variation could have been a very Victorian-esque sprawling city (the machines, perhaps, stunting technology as a means of controlling the human population). Now those "coppertops" that start to wake up have some sort of instinctive sense of technology at work and start to invent like mad as they awaken, chasing half-formed dreams of higher tech but constrained by the settings limits. As they become more aware, their inventions start to work... even the ones that shouldn't... drawing the attention of "The Operatives" with their dark frock coats and tinted-glasses.

The character of Van Hellsing in Dracula alone should speak for itself. In fact, if that horrible piece of cinema so named Van Hellsing (though I do love Hugh Jackman) can be considered steampunk, then movies about a werewolf a vampire surely can. Those creatures aren't exactly non-fiction. They may not have had fantastic gadgets and unnecessarlity large weaponry, but I would consider it steampunk. Just like The Prestige, which did not feature anything overly fantastic, just has a few scenes with Nicola Tesla and some over-sized Tesla Coils (when really it was a drama about revenge). Just saying.

Both the Van Helsing movie and The Prestige featured machinery too advanced for it´s time. I don´t see the same is true for Dracula or the Wolfman.

What about the movie Nine? It has a scientist who created the main characters, lots of gadgets being used/created, and judging from the visuals seems to be set in a time period somewhere around World War 1.

Being as it's French and subtitled it's highly unlikely to get a widespread cinema release in the U.S.A. You'll more than likely have to wait for the limited DVD release or for the vastly inferior Hollywood remake that's bound to be churned out eventually. Cynical? Moi?

As I read this thread I am incredibly confused by some people's idea of what makes something steampunk. I know I'm not the only one, and I wonder if this list wouldn't benefit from adding a definition of what makes a steampunk movie steampunk.
For instance, just because a movie is set in a Victorian setting, or has a dirigible, or features a cog or a machine doesn't make it a steampunk movie... because all of these things exist in real life. Also, just because it features something futuristic doesn't make it steampunk, it could go under one of many other genres.
My understanding of steampunk has always been that it is a vision of the future through Victorian era eyes. If that's the definition we go with then the movie doesn't have to be based in that era, per se, but it needs to be inspired by it; which means that while it can feature machines that did not exist in that period it cannot feature technology not invented yet. Hence the steam in steampunk.
So in conclusion, I will add my opinion on some movies on the list. Mary Poppins - Plenty of steam, no punk The Matrix - Plenty of punk, no steam. The African Queen - Barely any steam, definitely no punk Howl's Moving Castle - Plenty of steam, plenty of punk
