I've not seen it yet, but what are the chances the new "Sherlock Holmes" film will have some elements of SP in it?
SPOILER WARNING: Fob watches, goggles, brass cattle prods and poison contraptors feature...and set in the Victorian period...what more could you desire? With the exception of the latter two things in the above spoiler I would have said the rest would fall under period drama, rather than SP  |

I am not suggesting that it be added to the list, but would like to suggest to whomever has never seen The Elephant Man take the time to watch it. This has been one of my favorite films for years (Top five). At times it does have some steamy elements to it, but I would not call it Steampunk. I like how well David Lynch and crew captured what Victorian England must have looked like. The film differs slightly from actual accounts. It has to be the most powerful film I've ever watched. Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt give very dramatic performances. A must see! Oh, and I noticed that Young Frankenstein is on the list. So why not the original Frankenstein?  Supposedly a Tesla Coil built by Tesla himself was used in the film |

I was expecting to see The Wizard of Oz. To me, that movie is the epitome of steampunk with the steam/mechanical wizard machine. I was also wondering about the movie 1984, but maybe I need to see that one again.

No. Blade Runner is Blade Runner. It is Cyberpunk and Neo-Noir. There aren't any elements of Steampunk in it. |

"9" defiitely seems to have some steampunk qualities to it. The way that all the characters and their equipment are made up of various materials and scraps seems very steamy. Though, I can't remember if the evil machines were steam drivin. Either way, I feel it is worth consideration. Also, great movie if you haven't seen it. |

Supposedly a Tesla Coil built by Tesla himself was used in the film Well the lab equipment (including the Tesla Coils) from the original James Whale 'Frankenstein' was the same lab equipment that Mel Brooks used in Young Frankenstein. It was still part of the Universal lot's scenery dept and Brooks wanted it to look authentic. So even if the original 'Frankenstein isn't included in our list ..the equipment they used is! |

Steampunk is Sci-fi, but I don't think it follows that Sci-fi is Steampunk. For example, Silent Running is a great sci-fi film, but it's not what I'd consider Steampunk. Steampunk is kinda Victorian alternate reality science fiction for me. And what about Blade Runner!?
Blade Runner, although it's one of my favourite films...nah, it shouldn't make it to this list really. But both those films should make it to a List of Non-Steampunk Movies To Go and See! |

I recently read Treasure Island (over the Christmas holidays which I incidentally spent on a converted U-boat Submarine! ), and it seemed to tie in quite well with the whole Steampunk thing for me. Fiction yes, but not too much science involved really. And I guess with "Steampunk", it's not so much just a literary genre, it is more of a movement - so you could have a steampunk guitar, or steampunk music or something...which moves beyond fantasy into style. And I do know a certain mad professor who considers growing moulds for the purpose of battling them against each other to be pretty steam punk...no fiction involved at all...just mould growing in Victorian style bottles. Good question though...what do you reckon? |

It would seem that the previous perception (I won’t say “definition” for many reasons) of steampunk heavily involved the notion of “a world previous age incorporating technological wonders”, whereas today we seem to be moving somewhat toward “a world of technological wonders incorporating a previous age”.
Certainly the two concepts coexist, currently.
